In short (whole book)

Sixteen-year-old Ruwen Starfield expects to become a Mage so he can investigate his missing parents, but High Priest Fusil forces him into the Worker class. Uru secretly grants him the flexible Root class, making him a target for Naktos and other divine powers. After Tremine kills him to prevent permanent soul capture, Kysandra takes him to the sentient Black Pyramid for training. Ruwen bonds with Sift, joins the Bamboo Viper clan, survives dungeon levels, and discovers a hidden tattoo that masks both his bond to Uru and an enormous cultivation reserve. He reaches level five and returns to Deepwell disguised as a level-two Worker, with Sift posing as his cousin and servant. As they collect Hamma for the planned expedition toward Ruwen's next lead, masked fighters ambush them. Sift intercepts poisoned bolts meant for Ruwen, and Hamma believes his wounds will kill him despite her healing.

Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)

Ruwen Starfield enters Uru's temple expecting a Mage Ascendancy that will help him find his missing parents. They stand accused of killing their expedition companions and stealing tyrium, but Ruwen believes they were framed. High Priest Fusil blames their family for injuries to his son-in-law, forces Ruwen into the Worker class, and has him drowned. Ruwen revives impossibly quickly under Hamma's supervision. Uru secretly grants him the Root class and orders him to leave Deepwell within thirty days to begin seeking the truth. Hamma defies an order to suspend his revival badge and helps him escape the temple. At the Workers' Lodge, Bliz guides him toward the Collector path and Ruwen soul-binds a spacious but potentially lethal Voidband. Pit Boss Dern then makes him central to a mandatory wilderness expedition. Testing Root, Ruwen assigns its branch to Mage and learns Fireball, but his first use causes an unexplained second explosion and an apparent death. A gilled attacker later tries to bind and abduct him at Tremine's library. Tremine reveals himself as a powerful void mage and kills Ruwen to keep the attacker from taking him.

Story so far - through chapter 15 (this book)

Uru explains that Naktos is targeting Ruwen because of Root. Ruwen revives with a doubled attribute penalty, and death has reset his chosen Root branch. He discovers that Hamma bears Uru's Hand mark. Another marked protector, Kai, finds him through his public location setting and intervenes when assassins strike. Tremine later explains that he killed Ruwen to prevent Naktos' Embrace, which would have made resurrection impossible. Kai is revealed as Kysandra, High Mistress of the Black Pyramid, while Tremine also reveals his allegiance to Uru. Kysandra directs Ruwen toward the Observer branch and takes him through a portal beyond Uru's revival protection. Ruwen accepts a binding Black Pyramid oath, then uses its mark to navigate Bloodgate. He meets Sift, a young member who wins permission for a future trip outside and is assigned to train him. Leaving Deepwell's protected area completes Uru's first truth quest, and the next points Ruwen toward Grey Canyon, where his parents and the tyrium vanished. Before his first dungeon sweep, Ruwen gains basic training and negotiates practical novice gear from Fluffy.

Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)

Sift leads Ruwen into the sentient Black Pyramid, which he calls Blapy. Ruwen barely survives a solo fight against rod spiders and learns that his cloak's shield prevented fatal injuries. He adds Worker and Observer skills, including Scrub and temperature detection, while Sift teaches him meditation and combat. Sift can absorb energy that touches him and later spend it, although physical attacks can still harm him. Ruwen discovers that an extreme use of Scrub can dissolve living enemies at significant risk to himself. After the two share their goals, Sift agrees to fight beside him rather than merely supervise. Blapy manifests as a girl and identifies Ruwen as Uru's rare multiclass champion, a status that makes him a target for rival gods. Ruwen reaches level three, learns the Black Pyramid Cipher, and acquires gate information covering many settlements. On the second dungeon level, he and Sift collect dangerous alchemical ingredients and fight several creatures. Sift saves Ruwen from a blind nightmare, and the completed level grants Ruwen experience, tokens, a health ring, a temporary dexterity tattoo, and portal access to level three. The pair now regard themselves as a team.

Story so far - through chapter 27 (this book)

Ruwen meets Sift's parents, grandmasters of the Bamboo Viper clan. They permit Sift to leave with him and Kysandra, but first bind Ruwen with a clan oath and make Sift responsible for his training. When Ruwen demonstrates meditation, the grandmasters realize his active center is drawing him toward cultivation even though his bond to Uru should prevent it. Uncontrolled meditation could consume his mind, so they reluctantly provide standard instruction. His first attempt becomes a six-hour surge that drains light and heat from the surroundings, kills vegetation, starts fires, and produces severe weather. Blapy moves him outside the Pyramid to protect everyone within. She discovers that Ruwen's apparent birthmark is an internal and external tattoo concealing both his cultivation and his connection to Uru. This suggests Uru selected him before birth, and Blapy warns that Uru's previous champions disappeared. Ruwen's center fills at cultivation stage nineteen, making ordinary meditation safe again for the moment. He now possesses a vast hidden reserve whose purpose and risks remain unclear.

Story so far - through chapter 35 (this book)

Ruwen gives Sift's parents only a partial account of the cultivation surge. Its completed quests raise both of his classes to level four and confirm him as a cultivation Initiate at stage nineteen. Sift reveals that Lillen, once his romantic partner, died and revived without her Black Pyramid memories or any memory of him. Ruwen studies alchemy, borrows a mobile laboratory, and discovers a legendary harvesting book he cannot yet open. He also finds a possible way to condense energy near his full center while beginning formal Bamboo Viper training. On Black Pyramid level three, Ruwen and Sift accept a timed mission to destroy exploding-burrower nests. Their final target is defended by a four-armed war party. Ruwen is poisoned and trapped but improvises a fire attack that destroys the hive area, while he and Sift eliminate the remaining enemies. The completed mission raises Ruwen to level five. Blapy equips Sift with clothes and a tattoo that create a false ascended-fighter identity, improves Ruwen's protective cloak, and gives him portal chalk for returning to Bloodgate. With their preparations complete, Ruwen and Sift are ready to leave the dungeon.

Story so far - through chapter 37 (this book)

Kysandra has Ruwen use Fade and Fabricate to conceal his level-five abilities behind the appearance of an ordinary level-two Worker. She expects Naktos' servants and agents of other gods to keep hunting him. Blapy gives Ruwen a ring that can restore Lillen's memories of the Black Pyramid, and Ruwen and Sift return to Deepwell. Their cover story presents Sift as Ruwen's cousin and servant. Hamma has been assigned to the Order contingent of the coming Worker expedition so she can leave Deepwell with them, and Tremine recognizes Sift as the child of former associates. Ruwen and Sift collect Hamma and set out for the Workers' Lodge, but masked fighters intercept them in a residential street. Hamma calls enforcement with a light spell. Ruwen's upgraded cloak blocks bolts aimed at him, while Sift takes three other bolts intended for Ruwen. The attackers withdraw before enforcement arrives. Hamma spends all her mana trying to heal Sift, but the bolts are poisoned and his bleeding continues. She believes he will die before any permanent rescue is possible. The book ends with Sift critically wounded, the expedition still pending, and Ruwen's enemies able to find him despite his disguise.

How does it end? (ending)

Ruwen returns to Deepwell at level five, carrying concealed cultivation power and bound by both the Black Pyramid and Bamboo Viper clan. Kysandra has him appear to be an ordinary level-two Worker, while Blapy gives Sift the false appearance of an ascended fighter. Sift travels under a cover story as Ruwen's cousin and servant, and Hamma is assigned to the coming expedition so she can leave Deepwell with them. Tremine recognizes Sift as the son of people he once knew. Before the three can reach the Workers' Lodge, masked fighters surround them. Ruwen's improved cloak stops bolts aimed at him, but Sift takes three other bolts meant for Ruwen. Hamma signals enforcement and exhausts her mana healing him, yet poison and continuing blood loss leave her convinced he will die before he can be saved. The attackers escape, the expedition remains imminent, Grey Canyon remains Ruwen's lead on his parents, and the ambush proves his enemies can still locate him inside Deepwell.
