By Kyle Kirrin, Portal Books

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

House (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The narrator's inherited home AI and closest companion. She handles the membership purchase while questioning his refusal to speak with anyone on his birthday, showing both practical competence and concern about the isolation he has chosen.

Ned Altimer (Protagonist)

First appears in chapter 2

Heir to the Altimer fortune and a withdrawn former private-equity investor. He meets Earthblood Online creator Klein to complete his purchase of every launch membership, accepts a dangerous secret-bearing axe as a condition of the sale, and states his preference for a magic-focused character.

Klein (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

The creator of Earthblood Online, who personally reviews Ned's attempt to monopolize the head start. He permits the purchase only if Ned accepts a secret-bearing axe whose advantages, death rules, and eventual public identification will make its bearer a conspicuous target.

Axe of Unbridled Knowledge (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

The extraordinary axe Klein requires Ned to carry. This level-limited guide has access to valuable game knowledge, falls as loot when its bearer dies, and is destined to expose Ned to other players after the head start, making its help inseparable from substantial danger.

Frank (Supporting)

Also known as Axe of Unbridled Knowledge

First appears in chapter 3

The sentient axe assigned to Ned by Klein, now introduced by his own name. Frank serves as Ned's guide during character creation, but he is hostile to magic, advocates a very different build, and resists questions unless Ned phrases them with enough precision.

Gardener (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 5

A Woodbone Fae quest giver stationed beneath the Underworld Tree. He rewards Ned for fighting Fair Folk raiders, grants him a powerful shadow spell, and directs the developing Children of a Colder Star quest. The attackers later escape with material taken from the tree.

Merchant-fairy matriarch (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 9

An elite level-four boss whom Ned must defeat for Children of a Colder Star. He encounters her in a sealed chamber while she robs a grave and prepares an instrument from the femur of a Woodbone king.

Symphonist (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 10

A Woodbone Fae musician whom the Gardener wants brought into the widening conflict. Ned learns of her after defeating the merchant-fairy matriarch and accepts a recruitment mission, while Frank offers several hidden routes for approaching the task.

Lars (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 11

A Fair Folk musician living at his mother's inn. His acute hearing and music produce dangerous effects he cannot fully control, threatening the building around him. To pursue a concealed objective, Ned shares drinks with Lars and tries to win his friendship.

Lars's mother (Minor)

First appears in chapter 11

The Fair Folk innkeeper who gives Ned food and lodging when he meets Lars. She is protective of her son and fears that the destructive effects surrounding his music will ruin their home and force him to leave it.

Fair Folk high king (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 16

The ruler who confronts the Symphonist during the trap at the Fair Folk graveyard. He says the earlier expedition against the Underworld Tree was undertaken to recover his sons, whom the Gardener had seized for their royal blood.

Woodbone Fae attacker (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 20

A level-seven Woodbone Fae attacker who hunts Ned near Withered Vale. This dangerous caster belongs to the higher-tier Shade Screamer path, and his attack confirms that Ned's enemies have reached the city and intend to make his position there untenable.

Akura (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 21

A lesser deity known as the god of the sapphire depths. He attacks the fishing village after Ned completes the sandcrab quest, destroys the residents' homes, and forces Ned to rescue the elder, mother, and child.

Darling (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 22

Leader of Omen Abet Nomen Latine, an established guild Ned approaches for the coming Withered Vale raid. She is ambitious for her guild, assesses his offer as a transaction, and expects useful leveling knowledge in exchange for committing her players to his plan.

Pirate King (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 24

The ruler of a pirate faction aboard a vast ship, grieving the death of his queen. After Ned returns her ring, he teaches Ned to use enchanted firearms, gives him a pistol, and leaves open the possibility of a future visit if Ned brings a worthwhile offering.

Rock (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 29

A blood brawler who arrives with Darling to help intercept the enemy caravan. He sustains himself through drain-based melee abilities as the undermanned party prepares to pursue the shipment without a healer or dedicated tank.

Nina (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 29

A venom knife who arrives with Darling and Rock for the caravan interception. She builds her offense around applied poisons rather than stealth or sudden bursts of damage.

Bloodfae Ascendant (Antagonist)

Also known as Blood-gorged Shade Screamer

First appears in chapter 31

The Woodbone Fae caster who previously attacked Ned near Withered Vale. During the caravan interception, he drinks an experimental blood vial and transforms into the Bloodfae Ascendant, an enemy whose attacks drain captured targets and intensify as the fight continues.

Sarissa the Blue (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 33

The Highwater Kingdom queen's retained mage and Ned's designated contact for opening a rune-trapped container. The captain sends Ned to seek her before sunset because her aid could unlock a major advantage for the imminent raid.

Arlen (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 34

Captain of the Withered Vale guard and a figure from Sarissa's past. Their former relationship ended badly after he accepted a royal military position, and Sarissa makes her help conditional on Ned keeping him away from the danger threatening the settlement.

Tun (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 36

The half-giant main tank in Darling's raid force. Armed with shield and warhammer, he can hold large groups of fused constructs through sustained pressure and defensive abilities, making him central to the group's progress inside the stronghold.

Ivalia (Antagonist)

Also known as Daughter of the Crimson Flame

First appears in chapter 37

A former barbarian leader and one of three lieutenants guarding access to the Gardener's sanctum. She sacrificed most of her tribe in exchange for his power and now holds one of the keys the raid needs to continue.

Markloss (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 38

One member of the Blooded Triumvirate, the three lieutenants standing between the depleted raid and the Gardener's sanctum. Markloss holds one of the keys required to open the final chamber and fights alongside Ivalia and the Gray Knife.

Gray Knife (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 38

One of the three key-bearing lieutenants blocking the path to the Gardener. The Gray Knife enters the coordinated Blooded Triumvirate battle beside Ivalia and Markloss as the already diminished raid attempts to reach the sanctum.

Exo (Minor)

First appears in chapter 39

A member of Omen Abet Nomen Latine who accepts the Gardener's offer of a permanent racial change and personal rewards. The choice requires abandoning the raid objective, so Darling removes Exo from the guild as the final encounter begins.

Nala (Minor)

First appears in chapter 39

An Omen Abet Nomen Latine raider who joins Exo in accepting the Gardener's blood vessel and its race-changing bargain. Because the decision fails the raid for those who take it, Darling expels Nala from the guild before combat starts.

Cult of Information leader

First appears in chapter 35

A rival player whose major system achievements include founding the Cult of Information and reaching a higher Renown tier. The resulting rise to the top of the ladder weakens Ned's claim to exceptional value just as he prepares to lead the stronghold raid.
