In short (whole book)

Ned Altimer buys every head-start membership for Earthblood Online and enters alone with Frank, a secret-bearing sentient axe designed to make him a target. His early choices help destroy the Underworld Tree and nearly erase the Woodbone Fae, after which he builds a hidden commercial base in Withered Vale with House, Lars, and an uneasy alliance led by Darling. Once public launch exposes Frank, Ned becomes prey to players while Woodbone Fae and barbarians threaten the city. He helps Omen Abet Nomen Latine defeat the Gardener's mutated stronghold, becoming a Blood Fae during the final battle. The victory eliminates the Woodbone Fae as a playable race and leaves Ned honored in the Vale, level nine, atop the Renown ladder, and equipped to pursue a secret trade empire under the alias Francis. He and Darling preserve a covert partnership, but defectors can expose his base and the Cult of Information declares holy war over his refusal to share Frank's knowledge.

Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)

On his birthday, wealthy recluse Ned Altimer buys all fifty lifetime memberships to Earthblood Online, securing the entire three-day head start. Creator Klein approves the sale only if Ned carries Frank, an intelligent axe with privileged knowledge that will eventually identify its owner to the world. Frank openly advocates a Half-Troll fighter, but Ned chooses a fragile Woodbone Fae Dark Mystic and learns to extract useful answers from him. Ned begins in a war between the Woodbone Fae and Fair Folk around the Underworld Tree. He sides with the local Gardener, learns shadow and control magic, and becomes the first soul alchemist. Early achievements give him rare titles and Renown, but he also learns that Frank steered him toward Woodbone Fae by concealing the race's poor survivability. Frank then agrees to stop working against Ned's development. Ned completes the bone-collector portion of Children of a Colder Star and fights elemental treants in an underground burial chamber. By the end of chapter eight, he has killed a rare Thunderstruck Treant after surviving its most dangerous attack, though the resulting loot and next quest step have not yet been resolved.

Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)

Ned kills the merchant-fairy matriarch, takes the Flute of the Woodbone King, and chooses a difficult hidden route that requires befriending Lars, a Fair Folk musician. Lars's uncontrolled music endangers nearby creatures, but Ned escorts him through the Wailing Woods without allowing him to be hit. Ned dies immediately after completing the escort, recovers Frank, and brings Lars to the Symphonist. The reward gives Ned substantial Renown, a rare title, and an Innkeeper's Memento that can attract a unique innkeeper. The Symphonist is revealed as the exiled former Woodbone Queen. She accepts the Gardener's request and sends Ned to place tuning spikes in the Fair Folk graveyard. House, Ned's real-world AI companion, enters the game as a Marbleskin Golem intended for durable support. At the Woodbone warfront, Ned discovers that the Gardener's account concealed a darker exchange: the Woodbone Fae now drain captured Fair Folk for blood, while the two peoples once traded blood and bones for the needs of their respective trees. Ned crosses the poisoned river into Fair Folk territory and prepares to infiltrate the graveyard.

Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)

Ned infiltrates the Fair Folk graveyard and completes the Symphonist's preparations, only to discover that the funeral ceremony is a weapon aimed at the World Tree. Lars is under her control, the high king is incapacitated by music, and a molten ghost is approaching. Ned turns on the Symphonist and kills her. He then gives Lars the ancient flute and directs him to divert the ghost toward the Underworld Tree. The World Tree survives, while the Underworld Tree is destroyed and the Woodbone Fae approach extinction. Ned becomes the first World Shaker, but the surviving Woodbone Fae mark him for vengeance. Leaving the starter region, Ned chooses the Merchant Renown path and sails for the Onyx Sands. A Woodbone Fae assassin boards his vessel, but Ned evades the attack and forces the assailant overboard. The warning is clear: the altered Woodbone Fae can now travel beyond their original region, and the Gardener's people will keep pursuing him. Ned continues toward a difficult desert destination with limited money and roughly half of the exclusive head start remaining.

Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)

Ned reunites with House in Withered Vale, where Klein removes her combat powers and requires her to learn human behavior if she is to remain in the game. Ned claims commercial plots, plants his World Tree seed, begins an inn, and opens a raid quest against nearby barbarians. He rescues fishing villagers from Akura, buys a sailboat, and recruits Darling's guild, Omen Abet Nomen Latine, with head-start access and game guidance. A northern event leads Ned through drowned wrecks to the Pirate King. Returning the dead queen's ring earns training in enchanted firearms, transforming Ned into the first Shadeslinger. When the head start ends, a world announcement exposes Frank and encourages every player to hunt Ned. Darling keeps their bargain but demands more cooperation and scheduled access to Frank. Ned returns to find Withered Vale burning after raiders steal its water. He organizes rescues but fails the emergency target, loses Renown, and becomes unfriendly with the city. Frank is now public knowledge, the Woodbone Fae are undermining Ned locally, and the alliance with Darling is more necessary and more strained.

Story so far - through chapter 32 (this book)

Evidence links the Woodbone Fae to the barbarian attack, and Withered Vale gives Ned thirty-six hours to defeat both forces or surrender his property and standing. Darling commits thirty-nine guild members to the raid. Lars arrives believing his mother died when their inn was destroyed, so Ned gives him water to sell while House develops their new inn and base. Ned uncovers a merchant house supplying the barbarians and joins Darling, Rock, and Nina to intercept its caravan. They locate the hidden stronghold and fight the recurring Woodbone Fae attacker after he transforms into the Bloodfae Ascendant. Rock and Nina die during the battle, while Ned and Darling exploit the creature's dangerous self-enhancement to kill it. The recovered cargo includes powerful scrolls and a trapped tube. Ned's inn becomes the guild's concealed staging ground, with Lars posing as its operator and House handling development. The Renown Ladder then activates with Ned behind other early leaders. His forty-person force rests before the raid as the stronghold remains occupied and the trapped container promises a possible advantage.

Story so far - through chapter 38 (this book)

Ned takes the trapped container to Sarissa the Blue. Because of her broken former relationship with Captain Arlen, she agrees to improve its rare scroll only after Ned promises to keep Arlen out of danger. The result is the epic Scroll of the Arctic Army. Ned returns, persuades Arlen to defend the Vale instead of joining the assault, and enters the barbarian stronghold with Darling's forty-person raid. Inside, the group finds fused constructs made from Woodbone Fae and barbarian bodies. A sealed route and two deaths reduce the active force before it reaches three key-bearing lieutenants. Against the Blooded Triumvirate, Ned draws Ivalia away and spends a nullification scroll to save Tun from her accumulating fire effect. Markloss dies first. Ivalia then sacrifices herself to empower the Gray Knife, killing two raiders in the blast, but the surviving tanks and damage dealers finish the encounter. Four original members are dead, scarce resources are gone, and the raid must still face the Gardener.

Story so far - through chapter 43 (this book)

The Gardener offers permanent racial transformation and rewards in exchange for abandoning the raid. Exo and Nala accept and are expelled from Omen Abet Nomen Latine. The remaining force fights blood prisons, resurrected copies of fallen players, paired enemies with opposite damage vulnerabilities, and the Gardener's transformed final phase. Tun dies as the boss's power escalates. Ned drinks the Woodbone Fae blood vial, becomes a Blood Fae, and gains Double Cast. He uses it on the Scroll of the Arctic Army, summoning two forces that help the raid kill the Gardener. Turning in Room to Breathe makes Ned level nine, Renown rank eight, Merchant six, and honored in Withered Vale. The reward accelerates the city, unlocks advanced buildings, and eliminates the Woodbone Fae as a playable race. Ned chooses the Black Marketeer path and creates the trade identity Francis for his planned hidden Auction House network. Lars reunites with his surviving mother and becomes Ned's follower. Darling and Ned agree on a public separation and private alliance, while Ned prepares to leave the Sands before the defectors reveal his base. When the Cult of Information demands Frank's secrets, Ned refuses, and its leader declares holy war.

How does it end? (ending)

Ned and Omen Abet Nomen Latine defeat the Gardener, but the raid suffers multiple deaths and the defections of Exo and Nala. Turning in Room to Breathe eliminates the Woodbone Fae as a playable race, restores Ned to honored standing in Withered Vale, and raises him to level nine, Renown rank eight, and Merchant six. He ends the book as a Blood Fae Shadeslinger with the Endbringer title, a future-use epic pistol, the Black Marketeer trade identity Francis, and plans for a concealed Auction House. House continues learning human behavior while administering the base, and Lars becomes Ned's follower after reuniting with his mother. Darling's guild becomes the first to complete a raid encounter, then she and Ned agree to conceal their continuing partnership. Ned plans to leave the Sands before Exo and Nala can expose his location. The larger conflict shifts to the Cult of Information, whose leader demands access to Frank's secrets and declares holy war when Ned refuses.
