Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Ruwen Starfield (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

An Architect and Bamboo Viper candidate who returns to the trial seven days late after an ordeal in the Infernal Realm. He hides a sealed Apocalypse Hoop, cannot safely synchronize, and is assigned to Rung Four while suffering damage to his spirit pathways.

Echo (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Leader of Rung One and a hostile debtor who objects to Ruwen entering the trial. Ruwen can perceive her hostility, and he disables the mechanism she previously used to send him into the Infernal Realm.

Dusk (Supporting)

Appears from the start

One of the three founders conducting the Bamboo Viper master trial. She can conceal herself and move through Shadow Steps. Dusk helps open the first test, where Ruwen's late arrival gives his assigned rung a shared seven-hour daylight penalty.

Mist (Supporting)

Appears from the start

One of the three Bamboo Viper founders administering the master trial. Mist helps assign Ruwen to Rung Four after his late arrival, leaving his place in the clan dependent on the weakest group's acceptance and his performance in the tests.

Thorn (Supporting)

Appears from the start

One of the three Bamboo Viper founders who opens the master trial. Thorn helps establish the conditions under which Ruwen must earn acceptance from Rung Four and complete the tests to retain his place in the clan.

Uru's mental shard (Supporting)

Also known as Uru's fragment

Appears from the start

A divine sliver sheltered within Ruwen's mind. Its presence causes his Unworthy Vessel condition and blocks synchronization, while both it and Overlord are currently absent from his accessible inner world.

Sift (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Ruwen's student, close companion, and fellow step fighter. He is present at the Bamboo Viper master trial when Ruwen returns from the Infernal Realm.

Overlord (Supporting)

Appears from the start

An independent intelligence associated with Ruwen's mental world. It is currently absent from his accessible inner world alongside Uru's fragment.

Fractal (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 5

A sentient dungeon keeper for whom Ruwen preserves living grass and flowers in his dimensional storage. Ruwen accepts a continuing energy cost to keep the specimens alive until Fractal can receive them, showing that the collection has a specific purpose.

Hamma (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 6

Ruwen's partner and an urgent reason for him to return home. He plans to find her after the trial while facing crime, civil conflict, and other crises in Eiru. His prolonged absence and succession of emergencies make that reunion an increasingly important obligation.

Lylan (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 6

An ally Ruwen intends to locate as soon as he returns home. She is Hamma's companion, and their situation is part of the growing burden he has postponed while moving from one life-threatening crisis to another. Finding her is one of his urgent homeward responsibilities.

Rami (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 6

A trusted companion Ruwen names among the people he must find after returning home, alongside Hamma and Lylan. Reconnecting with Rami is one of several personal responsibilities competing with the crises in Eiru and his current obligation to the Bamboo Viper candidates.

Madda (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 7

Sift's parent and a Bamboo Viper Grandmaster who tests selected champions on the tower's third floor. Madda embodies the Viper side of the paired discipline and mirrors each challenger's movements beside Padda while a strict timer limits the attempt.

Padda (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 7

Sift's parent and a Bamboo Viper Grandmaster who tests selected champions beside Madda on the tower's third floor. Padda represents the Bamboo side of the discipline and mirrors a challenger's movements until the timed gate closes.

Tarot (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 10

A sentient divine-metal fortune golem with a dimensional pocket, a talent for theft, and an aura of misfortune. It must choose its user and offers Ruwen a reading in return for something he values, despite the serious risk created by its karmatic imbalance.

Gloomstalker (Minor)

First appears in chapter 33

A powerful Shadow Realm warden that can pin and manipulate shadows. It immobilizes Ruwen, questions whether he is hiding a true shadow, and treats him as an uncertain Lightwalker rather than a simple enemy.

Elder Star Tortoise (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 39

Sift's immense tortoise companion, found after going missing and returned to his pocket. She can cross extraordinary distances and expand to planetary scale, and Sift is more attached to her than he readily admits.

Ash Specter (Minor)

First appears in chapter 40

A powerful cultivator that claims the lava pools on Savage Island as its territory. It joins the creatures converging on Ruwen after his search for crossing stones draws attention in the lava.

Scourge Queen (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 43

An elite infernal cultivator who leads demons through an Infernal Crossing Ring while Ruwen and the Bamboo Viper adepts attempt to destroy it. She asserts the Savage Champion's and Infernal Realm's claim to the portal as reinforcements gather behind her.

Scourge Commander (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 43

A diamond-level infernal cultivator who emerges behind the Scourge Queen as an army begins crossing through the ring under attack. The commander's arrival raises the immediate threat just as Ruwen prepares a final attempt to destroy the portal.

Blapy (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 45

A dimensional-storage guardian who supplies urgent treatment after Ruwen contains the crossing-ring explosion. Although furious about the consequences, she provides powerful healing and protective creatures that stabilize his severe injuries after Tarot bargains for her help.

Miranda (Supporting)

Also known as Blapy

First appears in chapter 46

The true identity behind Blapy and the adjudicator of Ruwen's storage pact. Her active body is a clone, while her original self remains in the Third Secret preserving its spirit reserves and containing the expanding blast in her vaults.

Scourge Champion (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 74

Champion Fortress's hostile demon champion, a diamond-level cultivator armed with toxic attacks and poison barbs. It confronts Ruwen and Sift on the roof, where Sift challenges it for the champion role.

Pestilence (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 75

A hostile infernal aspect who appears at Champion Fortress with Plague when the coordinated attack on Ruwen, Sift, and the newly recognized masters begins. Pestilence is part of the five-member force that separates Ruwen and Sift from the exposed group at Victory Lake.

Plague (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 75

A hostile infernal aspect who arrives beside Pestilence as three more aspects ride toward the Bamboo Viper masters at Victory Lake. Plague's presence helps Ruwen recognize that the five-part disaster predicted by Tarot has begun.

War (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 75

One of five hostile infernal aspects coordinating an attack on the new Bamboo Viper masters. War rides toward the group at Victory Lake while Ruwen and Sift are separated from them at Champion Fortress, turning the pearl outing into a rescue crisis.

Drought (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 75

One of five hostile infernal aspects advancing on the newly recognized Bamboo Viper masters during the coordinated assault at Champion Fortress and Victory Lake. Drought rides with War and Poison as Pestilence and Plague confront Ruwen and Sift.

Poison (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 75

A hostile infernal aspect riding with War and Drought toward the exposed Bamboo Viper masters as the five-part attack begins. Poison is part of the coordinated force that Tarot's earlier warning described and that Ruwen must now race to stop.

Sole Rung Four Survivor (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 84

The last living member of Rung Four after War infiltrates the refuge and kills the other masters. She is wounded and held hostage as Ruwen and Sift confront the scale of the attack. Her survival leaves her as the only remaining representative of the close group Ruwen helped train.

Death Aspect (Supporting)

Also known as Echo

First appears in chapter 85

Echo's aspect form and the daughter of the infernal lord commanding the attackers. She arrives after the massacre, stops the other aspects, orders the hostage released, and ends the immediate assault despite her family connection to the enemy.
