Previously: Ruwen Starfield is an Architect and leader whose power carries obligations to Eiru and to the people around him. Sift is both his student and a trusted companion in the Bamboo Viper steps. Hamma is Ruwen's partner, while Lylan and Rami are close allies. Rami is a human-form companion who can read Ruwen's memories. Ruwen's inner world includes Overlord, an independent intelligence, and a divine fragment of Uru that complicates his ability to synchronize. Blapy guards dimensional storage and adjudicates its pact, while the sentient dungeon keeper Fractal pursues revival research. Madda and Padda are Bamboo Viper Grandmasters and Sift's parents. Ruwen's responsibilities extend beyond training to allies and family who depend on him. Ruwen returns from the Infernal Realm seven days late for the Bamboo Viper master trial. His damaged spirit prevents most of his usual powers, Uru's fragment blocks synchronization, and Echo remains hostile after sending him away. The founders place him in Rung Four, the weakest group, but Sift persuades its members to accept the shared time penalty. Ruwen and Sift correct the group's neglected foundations and guide them through the tower while teaching balance and the recurring relationship between endings and beginnings. Ruwen deliberately lets the trainees learn rather than taking the quickest route himself. He diverts Echo's team to the tower roof, allowing Rung Four to find the true token at the original summoning pillar. Before the next stage, Ruwen meets a divine-metal fortune golem that trades valuable readings for payment. Its reversed Fool warns that his chosen course may lead to disaster and that his plans will fail without caution. Ruwen accepts the golem despite its dangerous aura of misfortune and its history of attracting collectors.

Ruwen enters a lasting pact with Tarot, the prophetic golem, then travels with the Bamboo Viper cohort to Savage Island. The founders warn that the island is meant to harden candidates through lethal danger and that the Shattered Clan threatens Rung Four's demon-ravaged world. At the river, Ruwen organizes Rungs Two through Four against hostile groups and gets all twenty-four adepts to the bridge. When the bridge sinks among river predators, he creates a refuge and draws danger away from the non-swimmers. Echo initially leaves Rung One trapped at the far exit, but Ruwen challenges her to return, and she saves all six members of her rung. The entire cohort reaches its portal without a death, an unprecedented result. During the rest period, Tarot reads Lylan's obscured future and finds danger, resistance, and a costly passage. Sift wants to leave immediately, but Ruwen convinces him that Lylan and Hamma can endure while they complete the trials quickly. The founders recognize the cohort's cooperation and send everyone into the second island trial.

The second trial surrounds the candidates with a canyon of chests, only one of which contains the required token. Echo rejects cooperation and takes Rung One on a separate search, while Sift organizes the other rungs into a shared effort. Ruwen maps the canyon and lets the adepts reason through the relationship between height, terrain, and balance. Their first theory selects a dangerous imposter chest that injures Sift and another candidate, but the group develops safer countermeasures and uses rolling stone spheres to refine the route. Ruwen and Sift rescue Echo's followers, while Echo defeats the creature herself after a punishing fight. The other rungs recover the true token. While surveying the area, he encounters a diamond-level Gloomstalker that pins his shadow and claims he is hiding a true shadow. Ruwen breaks free, forces the creature to withdraw, and gains no clear answer about the hidden darkness it sensed. Tarot identifies the world as one of the Nine Muses and explains that Ruwen's Ink Lord Emblem permits access to its ancient archive. Back at the fort, Ruwen and Rung Four connect the swamp's mud, trees, water, and snail formations to the balance between soft Viper and hard Bamboo forms. They discover that the snails trace spirals toward a guarded underwater chest. The spiral itself creates a safe path between venomous creatures and bamboo traps. Echo follows it, retrieves the token for Rung One, and emerges safely. The other adepts celebrate her success, completing the intended lesson even though her rung wins the contest.

After receiving yellow belts, the class returns to Savage Island to gather crossing stones. Ruwen finds Sift's missing tortoise companion, and the founders explain that the stones transmit body-and-mind mirrors to the Mount Sorrow test. At the island's lava fields, Ruwen survives attacks by local creatures and overpowers an ash specter, which directs him toward rich deposits beneath the ground. He returns to find the adepts fighting demons around an Infernal Crossing Ring. Rung Four recognizes the same kind of portal used to devastate its homeworld, so the group chooses destruction over collecting it. A Scourge Queen and Commander arrive with further troops before Ruwen can break the structure. His final blow detonates the ring with enough force to kill everyone in the chamber. Ruwen opens his void band across the blast and captures almost all its energy, debris, and sound. The remaining pressure wave tears into the rock. Severely injured and unable to sustain his defenses, Ruwen is thrown through the chamber and loses consciousness, leaving the consequences of the stored explosion unknown.

Blapy supplies extraordinary healing after Tarot bargains for Ruwen's survival. Once he wakes, she reveals that the stored explosion is still expanding within her vaults and consuming vast power. The ring used stolen, damaged soul fragments as fuel, making the blast a divine-scale threat that could destroy the Black Pyramid's planet within years. The storage pact prevents an easy transfer, and dissolving it would release the catastrophe immediately. Ruwen leaves the problem unresolved and returns to the magma chamber, where Sift is holding off the Scourge Queen. He gathers four dormant crossing rings, evacuates the adepts by wagon, and escapes as quakes and volcanic activity spread across Savage Island. Echo then warns that destroying one member of a paired ring may also destroy its distant endpoint. Ruwen cannot determine whether another world suffered a matching disaster. The founders remove the class from the unstable island and bring it to the clan's coastal home for the hidden trials. Ruwen now carries the dormant rings, uncertainty about the paired portal, and a growing explosion with no safe known solution.

At the masters' village, Ruwen and Sift decide to teach the hidden trial principles openly so the adepts from a demon-threatened world can advance without years of delay. The class receives green belts, then Ruwen finds the breathing pattern among sentient Coral Vipers and teaches its controlled changes in air and timing. Everyone earns blue. He next identifies a force trial hidden among living bamboo and frames it as applying exact pressure while accounting for past, present, and future effects. The class reaches brown belt. A timing course over a deep ravine finally lets Ruwen experience the steps as a living expression rather than a mechanical sequence, and the other adepts acknowledge the change in his movement. Continued instruction brings the whole class to red belt. Although the founders question Ruwen's interference and warn of his imbalance, they allow him to advance. Every candidate then accepts the seventh trial, which is expected to be fatal for those who fail. Ruwen is summoned last into the final tunnel, where the founders' questions and warnings await him.

At the seventh trial, Ruwen identifies enlightenment as the most important step. The founders warn that his burdens and hidden darkness make the test unusually dangerous. They also reveal that his forbidden shadow forms and his instruction of Sift violate a restricted oath, with judgment waiting even if he succeeds. Ruwen proceeds to protect Sift from certain loss. The trial traps him in silent darkness, cut off from his mental citadel, until he understands it as a scale between his heavily burdened outer self and his neglected inner self. A small insight lets him contact his mental constructs. Because those constructs lack free will, they cannot reach the self-realization needed to balance him. Ruwen releases all of them from their constraints despite the risk of chaos. Their sudden self-awareness restores the balance and brings Overlord and Uru's shard back to him. Ruwen recognizes his internal shadow as a bridge toward his imprisoned soul. He accepts that inner self without anger, defines the final lesson as a step toward oneself, and follows his shadow inward. The trial's ultimate result is not yet known.

Ruwen returns from the seventh trial after three outside days and immediately challenges Dusk rather than accept the master rank that would trigger his Shadow Oath. The founders offer a delayed formal challenge or an immediate match against all three of them. Urgent responsibilities at home lead him to accept the three-on-one contest. During the match, his new inner balance develops into harmony, an ability to sense and correct disruptions in his surroundings. He takes Thorn's, Mist's, and Dusk's innocence gems and wins without surrendering his own. The founders accept his argument that connections and responsibilities can strengthen the inward step instead of merely weighing it down. Rung Four and Sift receive master recognition. The clan then reveals its hidden shadow path, and Ruwen is recognized directly as a rank-ten Grandmaster in Bamboo and Viper forms and as a worthy shadow Grandmaster, avoiding the master oath. With the trials complete, the new masters receive one final assignment to collect soul pearls near Champion Fortress before leaving.

At Victory Lake, Sift persuades Ruwen to attempt Champion Fortress while the other masters gather pearls. Their improvised distraction becomes a flaming avalanche, but they enter the demon-held fortress and confront its Scourge Champion. Then Pestilence and Plague arrive, while War, Drought, and Poison ride toward the masters. Ruwen realizes Tarot's warning concerned this five-aspect attack. The aspects demand the crossing rings and block every escape: they remove the portal stone, corrupt the ground against portal chalk, and alter their own return points. Ruwen gives the Ink Lord role and its protective armor to Sift, creates Fallen Heroes, and sends Overlord to coordinate rescue work. Their attacks cannot break the aspects' upgraded shields. Sift survives War's assault, and his tortoise companion intercepts a combined strike, but Drought removes her with a ring. Ruwen concludes that the attackers are trying to force him to use his damaged spirit, though his suspicion that Echo provided information remains unproved. The masters are trapped on desecrated ground as a plague effect spreads and all five aspects remain active.

Ruwen shelters the masters, cleanses contaminated air, and works with Overlord to prepare a portal site on desecrated ground. He briefly captures Pestilence and Plague in his void portals, but their protections return them to the Infernal Realm. The aspects' true goal is to bring Ruwen close enough for their rings to banish him. Ruwen and Sift attack the remaining three, and Ruwen breaks Drought's shield and kills the aspect permanently. With the other attackers closing in, he hides the masters in a tunnel while Overlord completes the gate work. War infiltrates the refuge and kills twenty-nine masters, leaving only one injured member of Rung Four as a hostage. The fifth arrival is Echo in her Death Aspect form. She freezes the others, forces them to release the survivor and withdraw, and grieves with the clan. The survivor inherits her seven fallen rung-mates' strength through their linked belts. Ruwen gives her an artifact capable of storing and amplifying hope, then Ruwen, Sift, Echo, and the survivor swear a celestial oath protecting its stewardship. The survivor leads remembrances before Ruwen returns the bodies to the clan.

The founders bury the dead masters and do not punish Ruwen for the decisions he believes contributed to the attack. Rung Four's sole survivor remains with the clan to train toward Grandmaster status, carrying her companions' inherited strength and the hope artifact under oath. Echo also stays to train a student. Ruwen asks Fractal and Rami to heal his swollen spirit pathways, accelerate his transition to divinity, and advance godstone revival into a means of protecting and remaking loved ones. He also directs the temple intelligence to seek safe synchronization that preserves his abilities, Uru's fragment, and the other beings inside him. Hamma and Lylan arrive with Sift, reuniting Ruwen with his closest allies. They postpone the crises outside the lair long enough to recognize that they are together and safe, though Ruwen remains injured and the wider threats are unresolved.

Echo also stays behind, while the founders bury the dead. Sift returns the Ink Lord role to Ruwen, declines immediate Grandmaster testing, and accompanies him to Fractal's lair. There, Rami, Hamma, and Lylan reunite with them. Ruwen remains unable to use spirit safely and still carries dormant infernal rings. Miranda is containing the growing, soul-powered explosion that could destroy the Black Pyramid's planet. Ruwen asks his allies to pursue healing, safe synchronization, faster ascension to divinity, and godstone revival capable of protecting those he loves. The external crises involving Eiru and his allies remain deferred.
