Shards of Honor

By Lois McMaster Bujold

After a hostile raid destroys her survey camp and kills one of her officers, scientific commander Cordelia Naismith is taken prisoner by Captain Vorkosigan, whose own patrol was ambushed by mutineers from within his crew. Forced into an uneasy alliance to reach a hidden supply cache, the two cross hazardous terrain together, tending Vorkosigan's infected wound and the severe injuries of Cordelia's disabled ensign, while Vorkosigan pieces together who orchestrated the attempt on his life. As trust grows between captor and prisoner under the pressure of the journey and the fight to retake his ship from the conspirators, Vorkosigan's political enemies and a looming invasion of a neighboring system threaten to catch them both.
