In short (whole book)
After an inner entity seizes Max during an attack, he struggles to control a black skill that grants power while urging violence. Max, Fowl, Tanila, and Batrire join Golden Axe, survive an ogre invasion, and grow into a tightly coordinated level-50 party. Max and Tanila become partners, and she reveals that she is a runaway elven princess with a dangerous red skill. The group delays entering the tower to earn permanent boons from demon and dragon trials. Max yields control to the entity to survive the demon dungeon, gaining demonic abilities, then helps defeat the demon champion. In the dragon trial, the entity wounds an ancient gold dragon. The party receives the dragon's boon, tooth, and scale, while Max secretly accepts a mutual nonaggression pact and tracking mark. The four finally enter the tower, but a wider conflict among three black skills is approaching, the demon lord remains hostile, and a contract hunter begins pursuing Max Host for unnamed queens.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Max, also known publicly as Seth Pendell, formed a four-person adventuring party with Fowl, Tanila, and Batrire. Alexander became a trusted innkeeper and local supporter. Fowl is a dwarf shield fighter, Tanila an elf elemental mage, and Batrire a dwarf healer and Fowl's partner. The companions survived rare and dangerous encounters together, including one that left Batrire in stasis and another whose poison required a life-saving potion. Max carries unusual abilities that make him far stronger than his displayed level suggests. The group enters this volume as a close but still developing team, with Max's concealed power and identity posing risks to everyone around him.
Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)
So far this book: Berserker allows a presence within Max to seize his body during an elf attack. It kills even fleeing enemies but stops before harming Tanila. Captain Vela detains Max under a murderer flag, then finds evidence supporting the party's account and chooses guarded sequestration rather than execution. Consume grants Max major gains, while the inner presence warns that future bargains will be harsher. Batrire fears what Max might become, but Fowl refuses to abandon him. An unexplained cleansing removes the murderer aura, allowing Vela to release the party. Rumors still connect Seth Pendell to the killings. The four earn Adventurers Guild rank C and discover that they are not ready for every dungeon at that tier. Seeking stronger support, they visit Golden Axe. Faction head Everett treats the established party as a single unit, accepts Tanila's negotiated dues, and has all four sign a blood-bound tablet. Their formal obligations begin at level 40, but they gain access to Golden Axe immediately.
Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)
Golden Axe accepts the party's exceptional rare-dungeon materials under strict secrecy. The four then defeat a stone golem boss without accepting the inner presence's demand that Max someday kill a chosen victim. Their high-quality rewards are followed by signs of multiple dungeon breaks, and they volunteer against an elite ogre outbreak threatening the city. Fighting beside temporary allies, Max restrains his visible strength until the defense begins collapsing. Brunhilde commands the combined force while Dagon coordinates ranged support, but an elite dual-sword ogre nearly kills Max. After the creature falls, Max leads the surviving adventurers in a breakout. Dagon leaves to seek other groups, while Max refuses to risk the remaining defenders on the same attempt. The survivors retreat through city streets, using magic and collapsed buildings as barriers. With civilians still escaping and supplies nearly spent, Max orders a final stand near the walls. Faction reinforcements arrive on an adjacent street just as the position is close to being overrun.
Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)
Faction forces end the ogre crisis, though roughly a tenth of the deployed adventurers are reported dead. Golden Axe assigns Tom to train and equip Max's party. He quietly recognizes that Max fights far above his displayed level and warns that the others must not become dependent on him. During spider-dungeon training, the group learns to defend its vulnerable back line against ambushes. Max and Tanila acknowledge their feelings and begin a relationship. Tanila then removes a concealing bracelet and reveals that she is a runaway elven princess with golden hair and eyes. She also carries the red skill Flare Aura, which the inner presence describes as descended from its own power. Despite their unease, Max and Tanila stay together. On the spider dungeon's second floor, the party burns a web-filled forest to expose its attackers. A giant spider seizes Fowl, forcing Max to activate his upgraded Berserker. He can now direct the skill briefly, but its rage can continue chaining from one target to another. Tanila helps finish the creature, and the party proceeds into the burned forest with the key it dropped.
Story so far - through chapter 35 (this book)
The party finds the spider dungeon's rare chest, divides powerful spider-themed equipment, and clears the final boss. Everett learns that the group has encountered an extraordinary run of rare dungeon events. He and Tom agree to protect the secret, provide tower crystals and a major skill upgrade, and begin seeking a fifth member. A level-50 elf archer becomes the preferred candidate. Tanila takes the upgrade and gains devastating area magic. During another rare boss floor, the party accepts the risk that repeated anomalies may draw the attention of higher powers. Tanila warns that her elf-supremacist sister and royal father could be deadly threats. The four defeat a giant armored ape through coordinated battlefield control. Its chest grants transformative elixirs: Fowl becomes a stronger defender, Batrire gains a protective barrier, and Tanila gains an elemental familiar. Max gives up his own elixir so Fowl can gain two additional defensive skills. After reaching level 45, the group begins elemental dungeons. They learn that permanent rewards from the one-attempt demon and dragon trials become unavailable once anyone enters the tower, so Max sets a firm sequence: finish the elemental dungeons, reach level 50, earn both boons, and only then enter the tower.
Story so far - through chapter 43 (this book)
With Tom's resistance gear, the party clears the ice and fire dungeons. Fowl reveals that his fiftieth birthday is approaching and that estrangement from his family has made the milestone painful. Max and Alexander organize a celebration attended by more than two hundred dwarves, giving Fowl a broader community to stand with him. The whole party reaches level 50, and Max and Tanila openly declare their love. Everett supports their ambition to defeat the tower while insisting that they develop enough strength to surpass Golden Axe's current limits. Before tower entry, Tom and Everett lend protective rings and curse remedies for the demon dungeon. The party survives burrowing and stealthed attackers by relying on Max's detection, Tanila's area magic, Batrire's healing, and Fowl's defense. A later assault nearly exhausts them, but they escape a confined canyon by building a route over its wall. At the destination portal, a black-armored demon ambushes Max after his companions cross. Cursed, surrounded, and alone, Max gives the inner presence permission to control his body so that it can survive and follow his family.
Story so far - through chapter 46 (this book)
The inner presence removes Max's curse and destroys the demons surrounding him. It wants to keep hunting, but Max regains control by focusing on his need to return to Fowl, Tanila, and Batrire. Consume has taken hundreds of demonic essences and acquired demonic magic and summoning along with major attribute gains. The party is then sealed inside a coliseum ruled by a demon lord. The lord exposes Tanila's concealed royal appearance, but ancient challenge rules prevent it from attacking the group directly. Its chosen champion uses fire, curses, and teleporting portals, nearly killing Tanila and shattering Max's body. Batrire's protective dome and healing keep Max alive until Regeneration restores him. Fowl shields the others, Tanila repeatedly immobilizes the champion, and Max applies debilitating abilities before killing her. Consume adds Demonic Teleportation. The demon lord attempts to present a trapped red reward gem, but a warning lets Max identify the danger. Forced to substitute a safe yellow gem, the lord grants all four companions Defense of the Demon and allows them to leave. It closes the trial by threatening to find Max.
Story so far - through chapter 53 (this book)
After warning Everett and Tom that the demon trial is unsafe, the party prepares for the dragon dungeon. The prospective elf archer is expected to join them after their attempt, following a death in her former tower group. The gold dragon receives the four peacefully, recognizes an ancient danger within Max, and replaces a lethal trial with three nonlethal attacks against itself. Max's ordinary efforts barely mark it. For the last attempt, he allows the inner entity to take control under a promise to target only the dragon and return his body. The strike draws blood, and the dragon honors its agreement despite being unable to identify the power. Elsewhere, an ancient dragonkin warns a world-ruling petitioner that one released black skill foretells two more and an eventual conflict among all three. The gold dragon awards the party Defense of the Dragon, a tooth, and a scale. In private, Max accepts a secret mutual nonaggression pact that marks him and lets the dragon track him. Max, Fowl, Tanila, and Batrire then enter the tower at level 50 and gain their first trace of tower affinity. At the close, a contract hunter receives payment and a dossier identifying Max Host as a black-skill bearer. The hunter kills the courier and begins pursuing Max on behalf of unnamed queens.
How does it end? (ending)
Max, Fowl, Tanila, and Batrire finish both one-attempt level-50 trials and enter the tower together. All four carry Defense of the Demon and Defense of the Dragon. They also possess a gold dragon's tooth and scale, with Fowl considering whether his estranged family might craft them. The prospective elf archer is expected to join after losing a member of her former tower party. Max privately agrees not to attack or directly oppose the gold dragon except when either side's life or loved ones are threatened. The pact lets the dragon track him, may eventually let him track it, and must remain secret even from his companions. Beyond the party, an ancient dragonkin predicts that the release of one black skill will lead to three such powers clashing. Tanila's royal identity is known to the hostile demon lord, which has threatened Max. Most immediately, unnamed queens have supplied a hunter with money and a dossier identifying Max Host as a black-skill bearer. The hunter kills the courier and begins a covert pursuit.
