Shattered Limits recap

By Shawn Wilson

Every recap below is hidden until you open it. Each one is safe to read once you have finished the chapter it names.

In short (whole book)

Max trains with Fowl, Tanila, and Batrire while hiding the extraordinary growth granted by Consume. A rare dungeon, the loss of his left eye, and violent encounters reveal that the skill has a will of its own and rewards human deaths. After reaching the capital, the party advances to D-rank, pursues faction options, and gains stronger skills. Regeneration restores Max's eye, but Consume develops into an ancient presence called the Consumer. When Batrire is critically poisoned, Max enters the Coliseum to fund her antidote. He kills Alfred, loses his prize money to the queens, and triggers Consume's evolution, though Fowl's winning bet still covers the cure. The Consumer names three balancing black skills and warns that their rivals will hunt Max. Zealots retaliate, outside powers notice the black skill's return, and the book ends with Batrire still in stasis while Max gives the evolved Consumer conditional control during an elf ambush against him and Tanila.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Max disappeared from his former life. His childhood friend Caleb had attended his selection, while the Guild-connected Trina took an interest in finding out what happened to him. Those ties mean that people from Max's past may still be used to trace him as he tries to remain hidden.

Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)

Max is training in Rumstant with Fowl, Tanila, and Batrire while separately helping Amy gain levels. His Melee Weapon Mastery lets him handle several weapon styles with unusual competence, but the party's immediate aim is to bring the other three companions to level 25. Max also establishes confidential relationships with a dwarf alchemist interested in rare monster parts and with Sam, a scholar collecting rare-creature information. The four companions enter a rare version of an ogre dungeon and become trapped when the entrance vanishes. Its two-headed ogres push Fowl beyond his usual defensive limits and force Max to use Berserk, a skill whose single-minded violence frightens him. The group nevertheless accepts that he used it to survive. In the boss fight, Max endures severe burns and injuries while Batrire spends her healing to keep him alive. Consume takes attributes from the three-headed ogre and improves Max's Fire Magic. The victory yields bonded equipment for everyone, including a ring that raises all of Max's attributes. Because the rare boss tokens and gear could draw dangerous attention, the party decides to keep the evidence secret.

Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)

The party continues into a cat-person dungeon after securing confidential help from the dwarf alchemist. A cat archer shoots Max through his left eye. Batrire removes the arrow and heals the wound, but neither her magic nor Consume can restore his sight. Max chooses to continue training, using Sonar and revised tactics to adapt rather than letting the injury end his adventuring. Fowl, Tanila, and Batrire reach level 25 and begin planning consequential skill choices. When Max tries to leave them for their protection, they reject the idea and declare that the four of them are family. They agree that they will leave Rumstant together after completing the dungeon. In the boss room, pillars favor the creature's speed, so the party holds it near the entrance and repeatedly damages its legs. Max relies on Sonar, ice magic, and Berserker to survive its attacks. Fowl is nearly killed by a final blow but survives through Batrire's healing and a potion. Max then hears a real inner command telling him to consume the defeated creature. Consume takes attributes and offers a converted skill, confirming that the pressure inside him is more than imagination.

Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)

Max, Fowl, Tanila, and Batrire leave Rumstant in a caravan bound for the capital. During a night stop, murder-marked bandits surround Max. Consume rewards his first human kill with attributes and a new skill offer, while its inner voice urges him to kill everyone. Max activates Berserker and slaughters the attackers in a frenzy, nearly turning on his own friends when they arrive. The party tracks the survivors to their camp and captures Lydia, a dangerous leader who avoided a criminal aura by ordering others to commit violence for her. A patrol assigns Private Felix to guard her. Lydia escapes, kills Felix, and flees, but Max catches her and uses his new Evasion skill to dominate their fight. He deliberately prolongs her suffering before killing her. Consume grants much greater gains from these human deaths than it usually does from monsters. Max admits to Fowl that the power may be turning him into a threat, but Fowl reaffirms that the party is his family. The group reports Lydia and Felix to another patrol and reaches an inn near the capital. Max's fear of the voice, and of how much he enjoyed the killing, remains unresolved.

Story so far - through chapter 32 (this book)

Using the public name Seth, Max discovers that Sonar can detect a pattern in a casino wheel. He conceals the advantage, wins 200 gold, and is barred from further play. The money gives him a possible route to eye treatment. In the capital, Alexander provides the party with a secure base at the Heavenly Pineapple, and the Adventurers Guild promotes all four companions to D-rank. They learn that staying together will require choosing a faction compatible with their mixed races before level 35. Local healers still cannot repair Max's eye, so the party turns toward dungeons, the tower, and stronger skills. Max gains Haste from a raptor boss and Festering Touch from an undead boss, while Nicholas agrees to distribute his unwanted gear anonymously to new adventurers. In a vampire-rabbit dungeon, Consume resists the boss's draining power and then overrides Max's intention to take its skill. Max collapses after obeying the command to destroy the creature. While unconscious, he encounters an ancient inner double that urges him to kill and feed its hunger. Max tells his companions what happened. They recognize the danger but again refuse to abandon him.

Story so far - through chapter 37 (this book)

Max searches for information about Consume's erratic behavior. In an undead town dungeon, the skill resists Drain Essence and then accepts Death Magic before Max can choose. The new power remains unusable until an unspecified level of corruption, and Max's damaged eye briefly glows green. Tanila, Fowl, and Batrire continue to judge him by his choices rather than by the power inside him. The party then fights a giant skeleton and a mimic disguised as a treasure chest. The mimic breaks Max's leg and nearly overwhelms the group, but coordinated magic and Max's Berserker state bring it down. Consume grants him Conceal Self, which can falsify displayed identity, race, level, attributes, and skills. He also receives a bonded halberd made from weapons fused into the mimic. After defeating a Shade Knight, Max confronts the inner entity again. He refuses its promise of power, threatens to die rather than let it harm his friends, and learns that it is willing to wait for him to yield. The party reaches level 30, and Max pays to upgrade his companions' chosen skills to Rare. They now prioritize advancement toward the tower over farming weaker dungeons.

Story so far - through chapter 42 (this book)

The party enters a harder tier of dungeons, where coordinated specialization matters more than raw force. Dragonkin resist physical attacks, and poison-using scorpions require careful control and cleansing. Max suspects that restricted information and earlier attacks on valuable adventurers point to a hidden group monitoring people with exceptional skills. Tanila recounts violence surrounding one elf's pursuit of ascension, including the killing of her family and many other elves, and Max promises he will not harm her people. A faction warrior then evaluates him in a troll dungeon. He helps exploit the creature's weakness to fire, receives a sponsorship token for his whole party, and gains the option to take Regeneration. Max accepts the skill. Batrire removes his ruined eye so he can test it, and Regeneration grows a functioning green replacement, finally ending his blindness. Tanila then shares restricted elven research suggesting that ascenders may once have returned and that many colored skills exist, including three known black skills. The group now has a possible faction route and two working eyes for Max, but the nature of ascension, restricted knowledge, and the power inside Consume remains uncertain.

Story so far - through chapter 47 (this book)

After observing the capital's Coliseum, the party sees how lethal matches can arise from money and faction disputes. Batrire's distress leads her to reveal that her brother and fighting teacher died in arena combat while seeking funds to improve his skill. Soon afterward, the party encounters a rare three-tailed scorpion boss. Batrire's grief contributes to her insistence that they fight it. They win, but venom transferred through her healing leaves her critically poisoned. Max carries her to the Adventurers' Hall with only a fraction of her health remaining. Merla saves her by placing her in Stasis and identifies Tang Mu as the specialist most likely to make an antidote quickly. Tang Mu agrees to prepare it from the harvested stinger for 150 gold, with delivery in seven days. Max pays a 100-gold deposit, leaving the party 50 gold short. Alexander contributes what he can, and the companions review the rare equipment recovered from the boss. Consume also offers Max a choice of two skills after taking gains from the scorpion. Batrire remains suspended near death while Max and the others face a strict deadline to fund the balance of her cure.

Story so far - through chapter 54 (this book)

Max chooses Armored Warrior and secretly enters the Coliseum as Seth Pendell to earn Batrire's remaining antidote money. Tanila and Fowl object because death might give Consume greater influence, but Max continues. He repeatedly accepts surrenders despite the inner voice's demands for blood. The competition is arranged to favor Alfred, a cruel contender protected by status and applauded by the human queens. Max kills a zealot mage, then faces a lethal red-haired elf. He defeats her and offers mercy for her equipment, but she attacks during a false surrender and dies. Before the final, a Guild advisor warns that Alfred's noble family could retaliate against Max's friends. Max secures a promise of one unrestricted Guild favor if he spares Alfred where possible. Alfred's Drain Power cannot overcome Consume, and he recognizes that Max holds a related ability. Max ultimately kills him when no safe alternative remains. Consume absorbs power it cannot merge and begins evolving. The queens subject Max to apparent mental pressure, take his more than 2,000 gold in winnings as a public donation to Alfred's family, and promise protection from immediate revenge. Max keeps the equipment he won, but his planned source of antidote money appears lost.

Story so far - through chapter 59 (this book)

Fowl reveals that his bet on Max's overall Coliseum victory produced the 50 gold needed for Batrire's antidote. Batrire remains in Stasis, but the party can pay Tang Mu when the cure is ready. In a dream, Consume's inner manifestation says Alfred had to die because he could expose their related powers. It names itself the Consumer and identifies Devour and Command as the other two black skills, each intended to restrain the others. The Consumer binds Max to secrecy and warns that rival powers have minions who will hunt him. Zealot retaliation is already underway: an assassin breaches the Heavenly Pineapple and tries to kill Max, forcing Alexander to strengthen the inn's protection. Max uses concealment and continues researching restricted skill categories with the librarian Adam. An off-world observer separately learns that a black skill has returned, confirming that the consequences extend beyond Max's world. As Batrire's antidote appointment approaches, Tanila explains that she fled people who tried to dictate her identity after she received her skill. About a dozen elves then surround her and Max, apparently seeking a pretext to kill them. Max orders Tanila to protect herself and grants the evolved Consumer control only after it promises not to harm her or innocent people. The book ends with the ambush unresolved and the Consumer in command.

How does it end? (ending)

Fowl's successful bet provides enough money to cover the final payment for Tang Mu's antidote, but Batrire is still in stasis and the cure is only now due. Fowl and Tanila remain loyal, the party has a possible faction sponsor, and its shared future is undecided. Max killed Alfred after Alfred's power failed against Consume. The queens shielded Max from immediate revenge while taking his Coliseum prize money, leaving Alfred's family as a future threat while the Guild still owes Max one unrestricted favor. The Consumer has identified Consume, Devour, and Command as three opposed black skills and has bound Max to secrecy. Zealots have already escalated to assassination, restricted-skill authorities remain hidden, and an off-world power has noticed the black skill's return. At the close, elves surround Max and Tanila while trying to create a justification to kill them. Max permits the newly evolved Consumer to control him only after it promises not to harm Tanila or innocent bystanders. The confrontation is still underway.
