The second Unbound novel picks up with Felix Nevarre stranded in the void alongside his companion Pit and the now-weakened, imprisoned entity called the Maw, fleeing hostile creatures that feed on mana while Felix learns to control the involuntary leakage that keeps drawing them near. As the trio makes their way through the void's strange, isolated pockets of civilization, they are captured by a pirate crew and brought before the leader of a fortified stronghold called the Ten Hands, where Felix conceals his true nature even as Pit discovers that the pirates use captured people to power their ships. In a separate thread, Vessilia Dayne recovers from an earlier ordeal and testifies before her guild's tribunal in defense of the companions who defied orders to rescue abandoned prisoners.
