In short (whole book)

Banished into the void with Pit and the weakened Maw, Felix Nevarre learns to control his mana, escapes the Ten Hands pirates, and finds temporary refuge in Echo's Reach. In Harwatch, Magda Aren's allies uncover the guild's secret exploitation of Foglands survivors and recover Magda's preserved body. Echo's Reach leaders blame and banish Felix, after which he learns that the Ten Hands engineered the attacks. The pirates destroy the settlement and enslave its people as mana sources. Felix pursues the raiders, frees many captives, destroys their ships, and kills their corrupted captain. He and Pit then reach a ruined temple and activate a blood gate with the pursuing whale maw's blood, returning to the continent. Magda is cremated, but the guild's experiments continue despite the Inquisition's arrival. An unidentified imprisoned envoy begins spreading primordial rot, while the Maw confronts a vast chained presence after the crossing.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Felix Nevarre, an Earth-born Unbound changed into a Nemean, fought beside his bonded Tenku companion, Pit, in the Foglands. Magda Aren led an expedition that rescued prisoners abandoned by the guild, but the operation left Felix, Magda, and others missing.

Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)

Felix and Pit awaken in the void with the weakened Maw, which is bound to Felix and unable to harm him directly. An escape quest gives them their only clear objective. Harrowings drain their power, while Ravenous Tithe lets Felix consume claimed creatures and release stolen mana. A corrupted Gnarhollow carrying much of the Maw's lost strength hunts them across floating stone islands. Felix diverts it and begins learning to regulate his leaking mana through internal gates. Mortal contact brings a different threat. Pirates aboard the Night's Wake attack, capture Felix and Pit, and carry them to the Ten Hands stronghold, where the Nixie captain recruits Felix under coercive conditions. On the continent, Vessilia Dayne testifies before the guild tribunal. She admits Magda concealed the rescue expedition's purpose but condemns the guild for abandoning its people and credits Magda and Harn Kastos with saving prisoners. The hearing leaves Magda's surviving allies facing punishment while Magda and Felix remain missing.

Story so far - through chapter 15 (this book)

Inside the Ten Hands stronghold, Felix conceals his abilities while the captain probes his Nemean identity. Pit discovers that living captives are drained to power pirate ships, and Felix realizes the captain may intend the same use for him. Dahlia, a naiad cook who reveres Pit as a Tenku, provides food and later helps the pair evade pursuit. Daedalus Mungle points Felix toward a temple near desolation as a possible exit. Felix and Pit steal a small manaship, but the pirate flagship pursues them and badly damages it before they escape deeper into the void. In Harwatch, the tribunal expels Magda's surviving associates from the guild. Evie Aren grieves her sister's reported death, while Harn and the displaced group plan to rebuild and eventually leave the city. Atar V'as, another Foglands survivor, continues his apprenticeship under a guild elder and draws the interest of hostile noble apprentices.

Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)

Harwatch's High Elder Fairbanks treats the cleared Foglands as an opportunity for expansion. With the Elder of Spirit, he authorizes secret experiments on inert primordial essence found in ill survivors. The discussion also confirms Eliza DuFont's involvement with the operative sent to ensure Magda's death while protecting Vessilia. Atar later enters a restricted ward, hears a survivor begging for death, and finds Magda's unresponsive body preserved by arrays. He is threatened into silence. Meanwhile, Felix's failing ship reaches a domain boundary and survives another creature attack. A corva ferryman then brings Felix and Pit to Echo's Reach. The settlement grants conditional sanctuary after Pit demonstrates that his pact with Felix is voluntary, and the ferryman houses them on his farm. Felix works on his mana gates and damaged mental defenses, but learns that Ravenous Tithe feeds on his own body, mind, and spirit when deprived. Echo's Reach offers shelter and a repaired vessel, though its void-born residents have deteriorating core spaces and no proven route home.

Story so far - through chapter 30 (this book)

Vessilia, confined under her guardian's authority, learns that the guild is concealing the Foglands survivors and resolves to investigate. At Echo's Reach, Felix helps defend farms and Rim Hunters from a sudden wave of void-beast attacks. Each use of Ravenous Tithe increases his bloodline processing, while prolonged exposure to the void weakens his regeneration. Conference records provide maps and evidence that desolations can eject material from other realms, but no reliable escape route. When the outer wardstones drain far too early, Felix accompanies the corva farmer to inspect them. A Noctnatter destroys their skimmer and injures the farmer before Felix kills and consumes it. Echo's Reach leaders then accuse Felix of sabotaging the wards and directing the attacks. Despite the farmer's defense, they seize Felix's ship and possessions, banish him beyond the wards, and separate him from Pit.

Story so far - through chapter 35 (this book)

Atar's warning brings Evie and Vessilia together to investigate the guild's tenth floor. The arrival of Master Inquisitor Corrin Catan disrupts Harwatch and gives them an opening. They discover that guild personnel have moved the surviving subjects and are destroying evidence. Atar breaks the arrays protecting Magda's preserved body, allowing the group to remove her, while an unidentified envoy watches from concealment and continues a plan associated with his father. Beyond Echo's Reach, Felix learns from the Noctnatter's memory that the Ten Hands deliberately drove monsters through the wardstone. He captures a ship commanded by the half-orc pirate bard and discovers that its mana engine is bound to an imprisoned dwarf. Pit then warns him of the raid. Back at Echo's Reach, Felix finds fires, ruined homes, and a population carried away by the pirates. The corva farmer dies after confirming that his spouse and children were seized. Felix buries his host and commits to pursuing the abductors.

Story so far - through chapter 40 (this book)

Felix attacks the fleeing pirate ships and releases many of Echo's Reach's captives, including Lord Knowledge, though the conference leader is nearly unresponsive. The farmer's spouse and children are not among those found. With Pit protecting the rescued prisoners, Felix draws void beasts toward the remaining fleet and boards the captain's flagship. Dahlia refuses to defend the pirates. Felix blinds Korm Rocksplitter and knocks him overboard, kills the captain's assassin, binds the captain, and drains the ship's mana engine. The corrupted whale maw destroys the flagship and nearby vessels, but Dahlia rescues Felix and Pit before departing alone on a skimmer. The captain returns aboard Felix's cutter, transformed by primordial essence, and Felix kills him. Still pursued by the whale maw and corrupted creatures, Felix and Pit head for the suspected temple near desolation as their last apparent route out of the void.

Story so far - through chapter 43 (this book)

Felix and Pit enter the desolation's sheath, survive an immense serpent guardian, and crash on the island containing the broken temple. Inside, they find an inverted ruin associated with Vellus and a dormant blood gate to the corporeal realm. As corrupted creatures overwhelm the temple, Felix wounds the whale maw through the wall and uses its blood and power to activate the gate. He and Pit cross safely and return to the continent. The Maw crosses as well, then confronts a vast chained presence, leaving its status unresolved. In Harwatch, the Inquisition seals the Hargate and restricts Foglands travel to holders of its writs. Harn, Evie, and their companions cremate Magda. Evie and one companion mourn her as family. The guild's experiments on restrained subjects are moved to a controlled desert domain rather than ended. The unidentified envoy, now imprisoned, contaminates another prisoner's food with stored blood-red primordial rot and begins spreading the infection in service of his still-unknown plan.

How does it end? (ending)

Felix and Pit return to the continent through the ruined temple's blood gate. The Maw crosses with them and confronts an unidentified chained presence, leaving its fate and Felix's primordial connection unresolved. Felix's dependence on Ravenous Tithe and his advancing bloodline processing also remain dangerous. The Ten Hands captain is dead, many captives are free, and Dahlia escapes alone, but Korm's fate and the whereabouts of the corva farmer's spouse and children are unknown. In Harwatch, Evie, Harn, and their companions cremate Magda. The Inquisition seals the Hargate and controls Foglands access, while the guild's concealed primordial-essence experiments continue in a desert domain. The imprisoned unidentified envoy deliberately infects another prisoner with blood-red primordial rot, advancing an unexplained plan connected to his father.
