Omega Force rescues a wealthy-house researcher pursued over Starfall, an energy project whose altered design can mimic a stellar catastrophe. The investigation exposes secret weapon research, rival Dominion pursuit, and a human-linked organization using current Earth-derived ships and recruits. Jason's crew recovers the full technical package, learns that Starfall is meant to power Goliath, a jump-capable mobile fortress, and finds that the organization has abducted the project's creator and the house heir. Jason stages a false exchange, hides antimatter warheads aboard the offered ship, and draws a Dominion fleet into the confrontation. The blast cripples Goliath, and the Dominion destroys it. Omega Force rescues both detainees and captures a senior enemy operator. The creator accepts responsibility after studying an earlier technological catastrophe, and Jason recommits to Omega Force. Yet the Synod retains Starfall data, threatens Earth, and targets Admiral Webb and the evidence linking unauthorized human forces to Goliath.

Previously: Jason Burke leads Omega Force from the Phoenix with Lucky, Cage, Doc, Twingo, and Crusher. The crew has lost its former base and much of its resource cushion, leaving it dependent on ship-based work and careful management of supplies. Its members retain close ties to allied intelligence and military figures. Omega Force remains an independent team that takes on dangerous work beyond the reach of conventional authorities.

Jason interrupts an agent's pursuit of a young researcher and brings the fugitive aboard the Phoenix. The researcher says his family worked on Starfall, supposedly a way to observe a star through a shielded tunnel. A failed test instead produced a focused stellar eruption that devastated ships, a mining site, and a moon's infrastructure. At the accident system, Omega Force finds evidence of secret manufacturing and watches Dominion forces erase the platform and strike buried targets. A second populated system suffers a similar catastrophe. A cruiser belonging to the researcher's house is destroyed while fleeing, but Cage detects a stealth capsule ejected before the blast. Jason and Lucky recover one critically injured survivor and an implanted data core. Meanwhile, the researcher's own valet abducts him from his family estate. The crew now has a living source and technical evidence, but the researcher is again a prisoner and the purpose of Starfall remains uncertain.

Omega Force tracks the abducted house heir to a smuggler world and rescues him from Dominion agents, though his former bodyguard dies rather than identify his employers. A Starfall emitter fragment nearly disables the Phoenix, demonstrating that the technology can disrupt plasma systems. The heir later escapes custody and contacts an unknown buyer, leaving him free while Omega Force withdraws from the system. Doc's recovered patient awakens and identifies himself as Starfall's creator. He explains that the intended project would draw stellar energy through a protected plasma tunnel. The house heir and a senior project engineer secretly widened the concept into a deniable weapon capable of destroying a world while resembling a natural stellar event. The project's true strategic danger is now established, but the heir's location and the buyer's identity remain unknown.

After an Imperial refit, the Phoenix reaches the remote research system and finds five Dominion-built warships destroyed by an unidentified force. Omega Force enters a concealed vault and takes the Starfall data cores, but an armored team ambushes the recovery party and escapes with part of the set. Jason confirms that at least one attacker is human. The master core remaining with the crew shows that the former project director assembled a complete weapon package, despite Starfall never becoming operational. The creator admits he understated the project's progress and possessed a master key to the ruling house's archive. Evidence now suggests that the hostile human-linked faction holds the house heir and may seek the archive for the missing research. Omega Force has only part of the recovered set, while the unidentified faction has another portion and enough knowledge to keep pursuing the technology.

Jason and Crusher pressure the former project director's indebted colleague into opening a hidden cache. The colleague has already alerted the hostile faction, but Jason secures eight cores containing the complete proposed weapon package. The claim that three finished weapons exist remains unverified. With help from Dr. Dalton, Jason escapes the locked-down world, captures a human recovery-squad leader, and seizes a modern attack ship. The captive describes a recruitment pipeline targeting rejected United Earth military applicants, while the ship proves to be a near-copy of a current Earth contractor design. This establishes access to human technology without proving Earth-state involvement. Saditava Mok hires Omega Force to contain the remaining Starfall record. Cage breaks the captured ship's logs and locates a remote base. There, the crew scans Goliath, a heavily armed platform with hangars and berths for a fleet. Twingo identifies jump-drive architecture, revealing that Starfall is intended to power an instantly mobile fortress rather than merely a direct stellar weapon.

The hostile faction uses the captive house heir to help seize the Starfall creator from the family estate after gaining archive access, then holds both men. Jason arranges a false exchange, offering a fast-attack ship supposedly loaded with completed Starfall hardware for the two detainees. He also draws a rival Dominion force toward Goliath. As unauthorized UEN-coded destroyers, the platform's fleet, and Dominion warships converge, the captors cancel the exchange. Jason's decoy nevertheless docks and detonates four concealed antimatter warheads. The blast breaches Goliath, and Dominion volleys destroy the platform. A senior enemy operator flees aboard a courier with both detainees. The Phoenix disables it, and Crusher and Lucky board, rescue the prisoners, and seize the operator. Military investigators receive the captive, and an observer sends evidence of the human-linked operation toward Earth. The immediate fortress project is ended, although Jason remains concerned that the technical threat has survived.

Jason takes the rescued Starfall creator to the restored homeworld of an alien people whose records preserve the destruction caused by an earlier civilization's uncontrollable superweapon. A retired leader agrees to teach the scientist, who comes to accept that pursuing knowledge without regard for its consequences helped create the crisis. Jason considers retirement but concludes that Omega Force should continue helping people, and the crew remains active aboard the Phoenix. Elsewhere, a scarred human leader reports Goliath's loss to the seven-member Synod. The Synod still possesses Starfall's technical data and threatens Earth while preparing to subdue the quadrant. The leader orders a web-avatar operation to abduct Admiral Webb, obtain the evidence from the Hialti system, and trade the admiral for the senior enemy operator held by military investigators. Goliath is gone, but the organization, its technical knowledge, and the alleged unlocated weapons remain unresolved threats.

Goliath is destroyed after Jason's decoy fast-attack ship detonates four concealed antimatter warheads and the Dominion exploits the resulting breach. The Phoenix then disables the fleeing courier, allowing Crusher and Lucky to rescue the Starfall creator and house heir and capture the senior enemy operator. Military investigators take custody of that operator, while evidence of unauthorized human involvement heads toward Earth. Jason brings the creator to a retired alien scholar, whose account of a civilization ruined by dangerous technology persuades the scientist to reconsider the cost of his work. Omega Force remains together aboard the Phoenix, and Jason decides its work still matters. The larger threat remains active: the Synod retains Starfall data, intends to conquer the quadrant, and threatens Earth. Its human leader orders an attempt to abduct Admiral Webb, seize the Hialti-system evidence, and exchange the admiral for the captive operator. The archive's final containment is unstated, and three alleged completed Starfall weapons remain unverified and unlocated.
