When evidence of werewolves reaches other supernatural communities, Elena Michaels learns that witches, vampires, sorcerers, and half-demons have also been hiding among humans. Their attempt to discuss a common exposure threat is interrupted when Elena is abducted and taken to a secret research compound owned by billionaire Tyrone Winsloe and run by Dr. Matasumi. Supernatural captives, including young witch Savannah Levine and half-demon Leah O'Donnell, are imprisoned and experimented upon. Elena studies the facility, protects Savannah, and works toward escape while Clay, Jeremy, Paige Winterbourne, and the others search outside. Winsloe eventually turns Elena loose as prey, but she survives and the rescuers bring down the compound. Winsloe is killed and Matasumi's operation ends. Ruth Winterbourne dies, and Paige becomes Savannah's guardian. Leah is exposed as a collaborator responsible for Ruth's death but escapes. The survivors leave knowing that human discovery is a threat shared by every supernatural race.

Previously: Elena Michaels, the only known female werewolf, tried to maintain a human life apart from Jeremy Danvers's Pack. A campaign by rogue werewolf Daniel Santos forced her back to Stonehaven and threatened to expose werewolves through conspicuous human killings. Daniel and his allies were defeated, but Pack members Logan and Peter died. Elena left her human boyfriend, accepted the Pack as her family, and resumed her relationship with Clay. The secrecy that protects werewolves remained intact but newly vulnerable.

Elena is approached after someone investigates reports that could reveal werewolves. The contact leads to Paige and Ruth Winterbourne, who identify themselves as witches and claim that the danger extends beyond Elena's Pack. At an uneasy gathering, Elena and the werewolves learn that witches, vampires, sorcerers, and several kinds of half-demon have all maintained separate hidden societies. Evidence suggests that humans are collecting information about them. Long habits of secrecy and rivalry make cooperation difficult: Clay distrusts nearly everyone present, and even the delegates reveal only what they believe necessary. Jeremy nevertheless recognizes that a human organization able to identify one race may be able to find the others.

Elena is separated from her allies and abducted with the aid of supernatural powers. She wakes inside a secure, privately funded compound where Tyrone Winsloe and Dr. Matasumi hold people whose abilities they want to study. The staff know that Elena is a werewolf and regard her as an especially valuable specimen. Surveillance, armed guards, and the captors' partial understanding of supernatural weaknesses make a direct escape difficult. Elena conceals what she can, studies routines, and begins identifying other prisoners, including the young witch Savannah Levine. Outside, Clay and Jeremy know she has vanished but have little information about where she was taken.

Inside the compound, Elena learns that the captives represent several supernatural races and that Winsloe's project combines research with his desire for control. Matasumi runs tests while guards use isolation and punishment to prevent cooperation. Savannah is powerful but young and grieving, and Elena becomes protective of her. Leah O'Donnell, a telekinetic half-demon, seems to understand more about the facility than most prisoners and offers help that Elena cannot fully trust. Elena begins planning around the compound's security rather than waiting for rescue, sharing only limited information so that any compromised prisoner cannot expose the whole attempt.

The experiments grow more dangerous. Winsloe and Matasumi try to reproduce supernatural conditions instead of merely observing them, and Sondra Bauer is made into a werewolf without the preparation or support needed to survive the change safely. The result is violent and unstable, confirming how little the researchers understand despite the records they have accumulated. Elena uses their assumptions about her to hide her full capabilities and continues searching for an exit. She also tries to keep Savannah from acting impulsively. Beyond the facility, Paige, Ruth, Jeremy, Clay, and other delegates combine their different resources to locate the captives.

Elena's escape efforts and the outside search begin to converge, but the compound's owners respond by tightening control. Winsloe's interest in werewolves is not confined to laboratory study: he wants to prove himself against Elena and treats a captive's attempt to survive as sport. Trust among the prisoners remains fragile, especially as it becomes clear that the captors have received help from someone with supernatural knowledge. Savannah's safety becomes central to Elena's decisions. Clay closes in on the facility, while Paige and Ruth accept increasing risks to recover the girl and prevent the compound's information from spreading.

Winsloe releases Elena into a controlled hunt, expecting the terrain, guards, and equipment to reduce her to prey. Instead she uses her experience and werewolf senses to evade him and turn the hunt back on its organizer. At the same time, the rescue effort breaches the compound and the captives act against their guards. Leah's knowledge and freedom of movement are exposed as signs that she has not been simply another prisoner. The rescue becomes a fight both to free the remaining captives and to keep records of the supernatural races from surviving the facility. Ruth reaches Savannah, but the confrontation places her in direct danger.

Elena survives the hunt and Winsloe is killed, ending his personal control of the captives. Clay and the other rescuers help destroy Matasumi's operation and free those who remain alive. The victory carries a severe cost: Ruth Winterbourne dies, and Paige is left responsible for Savannah. Leah is revealed as a collaborator whose actions led to Ruth's death, but she escapes the compound and remains at large. Elena returns to Jeremy's Pack with her understanding of the supernatural world permanently widened. The facility is gone, yet its existence proves that determined humans can identify, capture, and exploit supernatural people. The divided races now have a shared reason to exchange warnings, even if the crisis has not erased their suspicion of one another.

Elena survives Winsloe's attempt to hunt her and rejoins Clay and the allies attacking the compound. Winsloe is killed, Matasumi's program is ended, and the surviving captives are freed as the facility is destroyed. Ruth Winterbourne dies during the rescue, leaving Paige to care for Savannah. Leah's cooperation with the compound and responsibility for Ruth's death are exposed, but Leah escapes and remains a danger. Elena returns to the Pack with direct knowledge that werewolves are only one part of a larger supernatural population. The rescuers cannot treat the compound as an isolated crime: its files and experiments prove that human discovery could lead to organized capture and exploitation. The werewolves, witches, vampires, and half-demons therefore leave with stronger reasons to share information, even though mutual trust remains limited.
