The head of Struan and Company, the leading British trading house on the China coast. A former seaman who has built his position through nerve, calculation, and a close understanding of Chinese commerce, he intends the newly occupied island of Hong Kong to become a permanent British base. His title within the company is Tai-Pan, the supreme leader.

Dirk's adult son and designated heir, newly arrived from Britain after his mother's death. More conventionally religious and moral than his father, he is appalled by the opium trade and initially resistant to the hard choices expected of a future Tai-Pan.

Dirk's principal commercial rival, founder of Brock and Sons, and the only merchant powerful enough to challenge the Noble House directly. A rough, forceful former sailor, he wants to ruin Struan, take leadership of British trade, and secure his family's future in Hong Kong.

Tyler Brock's violent, swaggering son and chosen successor. He treats Culum as a weak rival and carries the hostility between the two trading houses into their generation.

The British plenipotentiary who has taken Hong Kong for the Crown. His authority over the new colony is considerable, but he must balance instructions from London, military realities, Chinese diplomacy, and the demands of merchants such as Struan and Brock.

Dirk's Eurasian son, raised within the Chinese world and publicly separate from the Struan family. Educated and ambitious, he can move between communities in ways unavailable to either British merchants or Chinese officials alone.
