In 1841, trader Dirk Struan is determined to turn the newly acquired island of Hong Kong into Britain's permanent gateway to China and preserve Struan and Company as the Noble House. His rival Tyler Brock tries to exploit the firm's financial crisis, while Dirk obtains a lifesaving loan from the Chinese merchant Jin-qua in return for binding future favors. Dirk also prepares his reluctant son Culum to succeed him, manages a hidden family life with his Chinese mistress May-may, and works through political, commercial, and personal threats. Culum falls in love with Brock's daughter Tess, linking the rival houses despite their fathers' hostility. Dirk defeats immediate attempts to destroy his company and removes the threat posed by Brock's brutal son Gorth, but cannot master the forces surrounding the new colony. A typhoon devastates Hong Kong and kills both Dirk and May-may when their house collapses. Culum survives to become the next Tai-Pan, inheriting the Noble House along with Dirk's concealed obligations and unfinished feud.

In January 1841, British forces take possession of Hong Kong during the conflict with China. Dirk Struan, head of the dominant trading firm Struan and Company, sees the rugged island as the foundation of a permanent colony and a vast commercial future. His chief rival, Tyler Brock, opposes him at every turn and wants his own firm to become the leading house. Both men pressure the British plenipotentiary, William Longstaff, over policy and valuable land. Dirk's son Culum arrives from Britain after his mother's death. He dislikes the opium trade on which much of the China commerce depends and is disturbed by the power his father expects him one day to wield. The rivalry is already passing to the next generation through Brock's aggressive son Gorth.

The Noble House faces a financial crisis serious enough to let Brock destroy it if he learns the full extent of the weakness. Dirk turns to Jin-qua, an immensely wealthy Chinese merchant, for the silver needed to survive. Jin-qua agrees, but the bargain is more than a loan: Dirk accepts future obligations symbolized by specially divided coins whose matching halves can be presented by claimants. The agreement may bind not only Dirk but later Tai-Pans. Meanwhile Dirk moves between British society and his private Chinese household with May-may, whose intelligence and independence complicate his efforts to keep the two parts of his life separate. Culum begins learning that his father's authority rests on concealed alliances and personal promises as much as on ships and accounts.

Dirk uses Jin-qua's support and his own maneuvering to keep the Noble House alive while preventing Brock from gaining decisive advantage. The founding of Hong Kong brings land disputes, hurried construction, official receptions, and constant argument over how the colony should be governed. Culum is drawn to Tess Brock despite the feud between their families. Their attachment offers a possible bridge between the houses but also gives both fathers another source of leverage and anxiety. Gordon Chen, Dirk's Eurasian son, emerges as an important intermediary within the Chinese community, though Dirk cannot publicly treat him as he treats Culum. Political uncertainty, disease, and threats of violence make clear how fragile the settlement remains.

Commercial rivalry becomes inseparable from family conflict. Culum's love for Tess strengthens, while Gorth's brutality makes him dangerous to both the match and Dirk's wider plans. Dirk pushes Culum toward the discipline required of an heir, but Culum continues to resist becoming a copy of his father. May-may tries to establish her own place in Dirk's future and to protect the family she shares with him. Mary and Horatio Sinclair are pulled into the colony's tense private and diplomatic affairs, where old secrets can be used as weapons. Dirk continues balancing Longstaff's official authority, Chinese interests, and the demands of the merchants while looking for a way to secure the Noble House beyond the present emergency.

The struggle with the Brocks reaches a violent turning point. Gorth's conduct makes peaceful accommodation impossible, and Dirk ultimately kills him in a direct confrontation. Gorth's death removes an immediate danger but deepens Tyler Brock's determination to ruin Struan and Company. Culum and Tess nevertheless remain committed to one another, forcing the older rivals to confront a bond they cannot easily undo. Dirk's own position appears stronger: the Noble House has escaped collapse, and his network of Chinese and British alliances gives him room to plan for the colony's future. Yet illness, secrecy, and accumulated obligations continue to threaten the people closest to him.

Dirk consolidates the Noble House and sets out plans meant to guide his successors. Culum has changed from the shocked newcomer who arrived from Britain: though he still differs from his father, he is increasingly able to act as the firm's heir and intends to build a life with Tess. Jin-qua's loan has saved the company, but the promises attached to it remain enforceable in the future. Gordon Chen's position and Dirk's private Chinese family likewise form part of an inheritance that cannot be contained in public company records. Brock is checked but not reconciled, so the rivalry remains alive even after Gorth's death. As Hong Kong's first structures and institutions take shape, severe weather approaches the exposed settlement.

A powerful typhoon tears through Hong Kong, wrecking ships and buildings across the young colony. Dirk and May-may shelter together, but their house collapses and both are killed. Dirk therefore dies after saving the Noble House and establishing Hong Kong as its base, but before he can direct the long future he has tried to prepare. Culum survives the storm and succeeds his father as Tai-Pan of Struan and Company. His relationship with Tess ties him to the Brock family, although Tyler Brock remains the enemy of the Noble House. The compact with Jin-qua and its divided coins, Dirk's relationship to Gordon Chen, and other private commitments pass into the future as hidden parts of the Struan legacy. The colony survives alongside the family company, leaving Culum to inherit both Dirk's achievement and his unfinished conflicts.

A devastating typhoon strikes Hong Kong. Dirk and May-may take shelter in their house, but the building collapses and kills them. The disaster ends Dirk's attempt to control the future personally just as he has secured the Noble House against its immediate financial danger and laid plans intended to reach far beyond his lifetime. Culum survives and inherits leadership of Struan and Company, becoming the new Tai-Pan. His bond with Tess joins the younger members of the rival families even though Tyler Brock's hatred of the Noble House remains. Dirk's secret arrangements also survive him: obligations involving Jin-qua, Gordon Chen, and the divided coins can make claims upon later generations. Hong Kong itself endures the storm. The settlement Dirk championed is battered and uncertain, but it remains the base from which the Noble House and its enemies will continue their struggle.
