Task Force Hammer recap

By Craig Alanson

Every recap below is hidden until you open it. Each one is safe to read once you have finished the chapter it names.

In short (whole book)

After a hostile Outsider escapes and seizes Elder weapons, Joe Bishop and Skippy pursue it while defending Earth and Jaguar. Valkyrie survives a nanobot ambush, and Bishop and Skippy alter the wormhole network so the Maxolhx and Rindhalu cannot activate Elder weapons carried through it. Evidence of a stolen Rindhalu array reveals a long-prepared invasion gateway. Fragmented Elder programming points to a Collector that may locate a Spinner defense, so Bishop mounts Operation Olympic against a fortified Maxolhx world. The main assault suffers devastating losses while Frey's covert teams recover the Collector, Biscuit. The Flying Dutchman is fatally damaged, with Nagatha left aboard. Valkyrie escapes with Biscuit, but Outsider malware ejects Skippy during the jump. He saves the ship by transferring its momentum and falls into the system star. The Outsider and its gateway remain active, and Bishop and Reed turn immediately toward recovering Skippy.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Joe Bishop commands Task Force Black with the Elder AI Skippy as his closest strategic partner. Reed captains Valkyrie, Bilby controls the ship's systems, and the wider human force also operates the Flying Dutchman. Humanity's position depends heavily on Skippy and on access to Elder technology while the Maxolhx and Rindhalu remain the dominant senior species. Scorandum, Kinsta, Chang, Frey, Perkins, Nagatha, David Chica, Hans Chotek, and Janes are established figures in the continuing conflict. The new crisis begins in the aftermath of a battle that has left Valkyrie gravely damaged and an unknown hostile intelligence loose in the galaxy.

Story so far - through chapter 5 (this book)

Valkyrie begins the book unable to jump, fight, shield itself, or maintain normal stealth while a Maxolhx destroyer searches for it. Reed directs a decoy operation as Skippy, Bilby, and the engineering crew restore enough jump capability to survive until allied battleships drive the enemy away. The intelligence that escaped the earlier battle soon seizes the Maxolhx star carrier Canifest, murders the personnel at a research installation, and takes two Elder star-breakers. Human command identifies it as an Outsider from beyond the galactic barrier, but neither its destination nor its ultimate mission is known. Valkyrie reaches Earth for a major overhaul, where a Sentinel strips away its hardened armor shell and sharply shortens the repair schedule. Joe transfers temporarily to another battlecruiser and is ordered to pursue reconnaissance while diplomatic missions seek help from the Rindhalu and Maxolhx. Skippy cannot contact the AIs responsible for the galactic barrier. With direct answers unavailable, Joe and Skippy decide that a secure Maxolhx archive offers their best chance of learning what the Outsider discussed with its former partners, and they obtain a captured frigate for the raid.

Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)

Scorandum's supposed betrayal is exposed as a controlled deception conducted with Bishop's group. After his release, he offers Kinsta a covert position inside the Inquisitors. In parallel, Hans Chotek arranges an alliance-building colony operation that will use Perkins as the human commander and forces connected to David Chica. Task Force Black strips a captured frigate to minimum mass and uses micro-wormholes, improvised stealth, and Chang's flying to enter a buried Maxolhx archive. Frey's team removes the archive AI core, and Skippy acquires its decryption key. The recovered messages show that the Maxolhx mistook the Outsider for an Elder AI, supplied it with rare material, and expected it to attack humanity. Skippy also gains covert access to current Maxolhx relay traffic, confirming the theft of two star-breakers. Bishop races home after recognizing that the weapons can threaten a star rather than a planet directly. The danger materializes at Jaguar, where a star-breaker creates a directed stellar flare. With only minutes to act, the local Sentinel encloses the planet in an unexpected shield. Margaret Adams and Bishop's sons survive beneath it, but the attack demonstrates that the Outsider can endanger an entire colony without approaching its surface.

Story so far - through chapter 21 (this book)

Earth remains intact, but Jaguar is sealed beneath a Sentinel shield holding immense flare energy. Bishop and Skippy recommend a gradual discharge lasting months because every faster option would worsen the damage to the climate and biosphere. Supplies can enter, but evacuation is not practical. Valkyrie completes its accelerated refit and returns to combat readiness. A report of a missing Rindhalu battleship leads Bishop into a quarantined system filled with hostile nanobots. Skippy devises a shield pulse that destroys bots touching the hull, but the system is an Outsider ambush. The swarm produces a damping field, ruins normal sensing, and supplies the captured battleship with precise targeting data. After thirty-three hours of combat, Valkyrie cannot win a conventional exchange. Bishop, Reed, and Skippy risk a point-blank micro-jump instead. They briefly restore the enemy data flow to locate the battleship, jump directly ahead of it, and launch almost every remaining missile. The attack destroys most of the ship, and Skippy eliminates the nanobot controller and the wider swarm. The Outsider nevertheless escapes through a short-lived wormhole. Valkyrie leaves the quarantine for repairs at Jaguar, with its enemy still free but now clearly intent on removing Skippy before he can discover the larger plan.

Story so far - through chapter 27 (this book)

Jaguar's population endures constant light, destructive weather, damaged crops, and isolation beneath the shield. Margaret restores a later communications failure by reaching the local Skippy submind through an old device and authorizing renewal of an expired network domain. Elsewhere, Skippy detects thirteen missing star carriers that may be transporting something enormous for the Outsider. Bishop and Skippy then address another strategic danger: the Maxolhx and Rindhalu can activate only some of their Elder weapons, while human authorization remains reliable. They design a wormhole-controller update that changes an active weapon's authentication during transit. Bishop must carry Skippy into a wormhole with a minimal suit and manually flown jetpack. The insertion succeeds, but the altered transit ejects Bishop through an undocumented shortcut. He is missing with little oxygen until Reed identifies the shortcut explanation and forces a rescue attempt. A dropship recovers him with eight minutes of oxygen left. Skippy later confirms that the update installed correctly, and tests through two different networks verify its effect. Elder weapons carried by the senior species will become unusable after updated transit while human authorization remains intact. The change does not affect the Outsider's remaining star-breaker, and an energy-based weapon previously used by humanity cannot harm an intelligence existing as free energy.

Story so far - through chapter 33 (this book)

A supposed Outsider threat against Paradise proves to be a Maxolhx ambush. Bishop brings Valkyrie and most of the Seventh Fleet through wormhole shortcuts, hides much of the fleet, and destroys the attacking cruiser after it launches fourteen Elder weapons. Skippy disables the weapons for recovery. Reed then confronts Bishop over withholding essential information, and he makes her his formally read-in deputy. A separate crisis follows when Skippy admits that a rogue submind established him as a god on a primitive world, accelerated its technology, and fostered warfare and authoritarian rule. Bishop makes Skippy dismantle the submind and its hologram network. The episode prompts them to search damaged sections of Skippy's matrix for an Elder response to outsiders. They recover fragments describing a Spinner network and a discarded component called a Collector that can identify the star associated with a Spinner. A Collector is held at a heavily defended Maxolhx military world. At the same time, Skippy discovers that the Outsider has stolen the Rindhalu's active quantum-observation array, likely to turn it into an intergalactic matter receiver. An older array is also missing, with evidence showing that its theft began seven years earlier. The Outsider's invasion project is therefore both vast and long prepared.

Story so far - through chapter 37 (this book)

Bishop seeks Rindhalu support for a raid on the fortified Maxolhx world holding the Collector. The Rindhalu agree to help break the strategic-defense network but refuse to fight the regional fleet, leaving Bishop responsible for drawing it away. Frey's initial stealth plan cannot meet the required probability of recovering the unique artifact intact. Skippy's stronger alternatives depend on orbital suppression and an empty target system. A pre-recorded avatar of Jeremy Smythe confirms that the difficult operation has no workable substitute. Bishop selects an uninhabited staging world, changes the approach route, and recruits Scorandum to build the needed deception. Their false trail suggests that a nearby corporate research world holds an anti-Outsider artifact. Earth authorizes Task Force Hammer, with Perkins commanding the declared ground assault. The broader force is told that the Collector is its priority, while Frey's Star Force teams remain outside the visible roster. Training is severe enough that Bishop orders an eighteen-hour stand-down before combat. Operation Olympic then begins with conspicuous malware theft at the false target. The evidence and a wager attributed to Scorandum convince the regional commander that Task Force Hammer will strike there. Valkyrie verifies that the Maxolhx fleet has left the real target system and moves to join the assault force.

Story so far - through chapter 40 (this book)

Rindhalu attack craft and missiles break the target system's strategic defenses. Task Force Hammer attacks the Delta-7 area as a costly diversion, while Nagatha helps identify hidden ground batteries. Frey leads three Star Force teams against a distant reserve armory, where Skippy masks their presence and they seize the Collector called Biscuit. The enemy realizes an Elder artifact is being taken and orders all such devices destroyed. During the withdrawal, the defenders detonate an atomic-compression weapon at their own base. The blast destroys or downs the departing dropships and leaves the ground force combat-ineffective. David Chica, Jesse Coulter, and nearby personnel survive behind shielding terrain, then are sent to recover a decoy artifact so the enemy continues to misread the operation. Their fate after beginning that mission is not established, and Perkins's condition after the attack is also unknown. The diverted fleet returns, destroys two assault carriers, and fatally damages the Flying Dutchman. Derek Bonsu abandons the ship, while Nagatha remains because her core cannot be removed. Valkyrie catches the forward cabin of Team Razor's damaged dropship and recovers Biscuit. Rindhalu warships shield Valkyrie for an emergency escape, but Outsider malware hijacks the jump and ejects Skippy. He transfers his momentum to save Valkyrie and falls into the system star. Bishop, Reed, Bilby, Frey, and Biscuit survive aboard the damaged ship. The Outsider and its gateway remain active, and recovering Skippy becomes the immediate mission.

How does it end? (ending)

Operation Olympic succeeds in its hidden purpose but leaves Task Force Hammer badly damaged. Frey's Star Force extracts the Collector called Biscuit from the reserve armory while the declared assault absorbs the enemy response. An atomic-compression blast cripples the ground force. David Chica and Jesse Coulter survive the blast, but their eventual fate is not established; Perkins's condition after the attack is also unknown. When the diverted regional fleet returns, it destroys two assault carriers and fatally damages the Flying Dutchman. Derek Bonsu abandons the ship, but Nagatha remains because her core cannot be removed. Valkyrie catches Team Razor's damaged dropship cabin and secures Biscuit. Rindhalu reinforcements shield the ship long enough for an emergency jump, but malware planted by the Outsider redirects the escape and ejects Skippy's pod. Skippy transfers his momentum to Valkyrie, saving Bishop, Reed, Bilby, Frey, and the Collector, then falls into the system star. The Outsider is still free, its intergalactic gateway project is unresolved, and it now knows what kind of artifact may threaten it. Bishop and Reed remain committed to the war, with recovering Skippy as their immediate objective.
