The Exalted Empire kills the citadel's warden leader but avoids fighting the depleted sects. Selia enters the afterlife temporarily, Vanessa returns to life, and Anrosh remains at Twilight Melody. With the eighth iteration seven days away, Kael orders every dome opened and distant powers notice a change in time.

Previously: The Empire has fallen after the struggle against Haster and the dome threat, leaving survivors scattered among active monsters and Taken. Ryun disappeared into the void after the battle, while Selia and the surviving group reached Twilight Melody. Zach and Naha escaped their prolonged ordeal, but their recovery remains incomplete. Naha is free of her former cultivation and struggling against the remnants of the Night Horror's madness. Zach has lost much of his earlier memory and is developing a dangerous imbalance of his own. Twilight Melody has become a refuge for millions under Anrosh's provisional leadership. Ryun still owes the Dealmaker an unspecified favor, and his grief for Melody continues to shape him.

Naha leads Zach and a refugee group through the ruined Empire, caring for him as his analytical obsession becomes dangerous. Unable to find a local cure, she redirects the group toward Dragonheart's alchemists. Ryun heals in the void and returns about three years after the battle. Selia confirms that their allies survived and reached Twilight Melody, though Haster's remaining monsters are moving north. In an abandoned city, Ryun finds the preserved body of Zenker and recovers his equipment and treasury. While travelling home, Ryun follows his sense of an accepted true death to the Oasis of Insight. Its ancient keeper identifies his connection to the end, gives him two perilous legacy fruits, and asks Ryun to kill it. Ryun clears the dungeon, retains the fruits, gathers valuable materials, and advances his forging bond with Brightstar. He nevertheless postpones returning to the sect so he can train and experiment in isolation.

Anrosh governs Twilight Melody in Ryun's absence. The refuge can barely support its immense population, its vaults are depleted, and powerful guest factions threaten its independence. She enforces sect law against members of both guest groups and earns public recognition as the acting leader. Tali advises without taking control, while Nayra supports Anrosh even when a family member is punished. Anrosh begins organizing the sect's cultivation archive and shaping a common identity. A border crisis then reveals that people from an absorbed mining sect have disappeared after trespassing beneath a neighboring territory. The ancient neighboring sect has concealed strength, including a hidden city populated by undead, and its Ascended leader refuses to negotiate with anyone but Ryun or Tali. Anrosh accepts that Twilight Melody failed to impose obligations on the group it absorbed. She decides that representing the sect herself is necessary to establish legitimate authority.

Zach and Naha continue toward Dragonheart while Zach studies essences with increasingly compulsive focus. The shade remakes him into a stronger drake-like form, teaches him runes that consume soul and will, and offers escape in exchange for placing a rune on Zach's right arm. Kael accepts. The captives are freed and the city survives, though much of the territory is ruined. Kael's group then attacks the exhausted Zach and succeeds in placing the shade's rune on his right arm before sending him into the ethereal realm.

Helsa is free but damaged and urgently short of food. Meanwhile, the coalition reaches Emeros and discovers that the entire campaign was a prepared counterencirclement. A vast enemy army traps the besiegers between the city and citadel. Fighting spreads through the coalition lines and city defenses. Vanessa's mother incinerates Vanessa and herself, destroying a soul-killing trap before it can take them permanently and leaving open their return. Kri fights among fractured formations, Tali kills enemy generals, and coalition leaders struggle to prevent their fronts from collapsing under the enemy leader's suppression and battlefield powers.

Their bond intensifies beyond coordination, forming the Presence of the Eternal Hunters. As one combined hunter acting through two bodies, they reinforce Brightstar's armor, destroy the general, and turn toward the remaining enemy commanders. The battle remains desperate, but Twilight Melody now has a power capable of challenging the second army directly.

The Lord of Death reveals his fortified true body and raises fallen warriors and monsters into an undead army, reversing the ground battle. Tali and other coalition fighters continue killing generals in the air. Twilight Melody's giant gravity combatant triggers a black-hole formation that kills the enemy city leader and a fortified archer, though her own survival is not established. Ryun and Selia remain joined as the Eternal Hunters. Nayra reaches them, kills one general, and helps destroy the last, ending the main field battle. The Exalted Empire then arrives in force.
