The Bellmaker characters

By Brian Jacques

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Joseph (Protagonist)

Also known as the Bellmaker

Appears from the start

An old mouse craftsman living at Redwall Abbey and the father of Mariel. He made the great bell that hangs at the Abbey, but his deepest concern is for the daughter who has gone wandering beyond Mossflower.

Saxtus (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The Abbot of Redwall, a thoughtful mouse responsible for the Abbey during Joseph's time there. He respects dreams and signs associated with Martin the Warrior without abandoning practical judgment.

Urgan Nagru (Antagonist)

Also known as the Foxwolf

First appears in chapter 2

A fox warlord who wears a wolf's skin and has seized Castle Floret in Southsward. He uses the disguise, his strength, and calculated terror to present himself as something more fearsome than an ordinary fox.

Silvamord (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 2

Urgan Nagru's mate and partner in the conquest of Southsward. A ruthless vixen and skilled archer, she shares command of the occupying horde and is quicker than Nagru to answer resistance with violence.

Gael Squirrelking (Supporting)

Also known as Squirrelking of Southsward

First appears in chapter 3

The squirrel ruler of Southsward, displaced when Urgan Nagru's horde captures Castle Floret. His concern for his imprisoned family weighs against every decision he makes as a leader.

Serena (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 3

Gael's wife and queen of Southsward, held inside Castle Floret after the Foxwolf's conquest. She tries to protect her child while living under the occupiers' threats.

Truffen (Minor)

First appears in chapter 3

The young child of Gael and Serena, and therefore an heir of Southsward. Truffen is a vulnerable prisoner whose safety limits what the resistance can risk.

Mariel (Protagonist)

First appears in chapter 4

Joseph's daughter, a mouse warrior who once escaped a pirate king and now wanders far from Redwall with Dandin. Direct, fearless, and experienced with a knotted rope as a weapon, she is drawn into Southsward's struggle against Urgan Nagru.

Dandin (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 4

A young mouse from Redwall travelling with Mariel. He carries Martin the Warrior's sword and combines a warrior's courage with a steadier temperament than his companion's.

Bowly Pintips (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 5

A young hedgehog who becomes Mariel and Dandin's travelling companion. Streetwise, independent, and prickly in manner as well as appearance, he is loyal once he accepts friendship.

Rufe Brush (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 6

A young squirrel of Redwall who joins Joseph's search for Mariel. Quick, eager, and courageous, he brings woodland skill to a journey that soon reaches the sea.

Durry Quill (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 6

A young hedgehog from Redwall who accompanies Joseph. Good-natured and determined, he remains loyal to the Bellmaker through a journey much larger than the Abbey expedition first expects.

Finnbarr Galedeep (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 10

An experienced sea-otter captain who takes command readily aboard ship. Bold, boisterous, and dangerous in a fight, he becomes the expedition's guide through the hazards between Mossflower and Southsward.

Rab Streambattle (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 16

An otter leader in Southsward who opposes the Foxwolf's rule. He commands creatures who know the waterways and provides the displaced king and his allies with a base for resistance.
