In short (whole book)

Joseph the Bellmaker receives a warning from Martin the Warrior that his wandering daughter Mariel is in danger. Far south, the fox Urgan Nagru and his mate Silvamord have conquered Castle Floret, imprisoned Queen Serena and young Truffen, and driven Squirrelking Gael from power. Mariel, Dandin, and Bowly Pintips help Gael and join Southsward's resistance. Joseph leaves Redwall with Rufe Brush and Durry Quill, later joining the sea-otter captain Finnbarr Galedeep for a hazardous voyage south. After separations, sea dangers, and battles with the occupiers, the travellers unite with Gael, Rab Streambattle's otters, and other Southsward allies. They attack Castle Floret, release the captives, and overthrow the Foxwolf's horde. Silvamord and Urgan Nagru are killed, but Finnbarr also falls in the final battle. Gael is restored with his family, Joseph is reunited with Mariel, and Southsward regains its freedom.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Mariel, daughter of Joseph the Bellmaker, survived enslavement by the searat king Gabool and helped end his rule. Joseph's great bell was later brought to Redwall Abbey. Mariel left the Abbey to wander with the young mouse Dandin, who carries Martin the Warrior's sword. This tale begins a new conflict far from the earlier island war, and those facts are enough to follow it.

Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)

At Redwall, Joseph the Bellmaker receives a dream-warning associated with Martin the Warrior: his daughter Mariel is far away and in danger. The warning gives him a direction but few details. In Southsward, the danger is already real. Urgan Nagru, a fox who wears a wolf skin and calls himself the Foxwolf, has conquered Castle Floret with his mate Silvamord and their horde. Squirrelking Gael has lost his stronghold, while his wife Serena and their child Truffen remain in the enemy's power. Mariel, Dandin, and their young hedgehog companion Bowly Pintips are drawn into the displaced king's struggle.

Story so far - through chapter 13 (this book)

Joseph will not remain at Redwall after the warning. He sets out to find Mariel with the young squirrel Rufe Brush and hedgehog Durry Quill, relying on Martin's guidance and help encountered beyond Mossflower. Their route leads toward the coast and an alliance with Finnbarr Galedeep, a seasoned sea-otter captain. In Southsward, Mariel, Dandin, and Bowly help Gael stay beyond the Foxwolf's reach and seek creatures still willing to resist. Every move is constrained by the prisoners inside Castle Floret, whom Nagru and Silvamord can use against an open attack.

Story so far - through chapter 19 (this book)

Joseph's search becomes a sea expedition under Finnbarr's command. The Bellmaker's party must survive hostile waters and enemies who regard a travelling vessel as prey, but the voyage also carries them much farther south than an overland search could. Gael's group finds support among Southsward creatures who have avoided or resisted the occupation, including otters led by Rab Streambattle. Mariel and Dandin become fighters in a wider rebellion rather than isolated wanderers, while Bowly proves himself a dependable companion. Castle Floret remains in Nagru's hands, with Serena and Truffen still needing rescue.

Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)

The voyage south costs Joseph's party time and blood, but Finnbarr keeps the survivors moving toward Southsward. On land, Gael and his allies gather strength without being able to match the Foxwolf's horde in a direct contest. Rab Streambattle's knowledge of the country and waterways gives the resistance room to move and plan. Mariel remains at the centre of the fighting, Dandin carries Martin's sword for the cause, and Bowly works beside them. Urgan Nagru and Silvamord answer continued resistance by tightening their hold on Castle Floret and its captives.

Story so far - through chapter 31 (this book)

Joseph and the surviving voyagers finally draw close enough to the Southsward conflict for the two strands of the journey to converge. The Bellmaker's warning has led him to the same struggle in which Mariel is already fighting. Gael's woodland supporters, Rab Streambattle's otters, Mariel's companions, and Finnbarr's party can now plan as one force. Their aim is not merely to defeat scattered troops but to enter Castle Floret, save Serena and Truffen, and remove both Nagru and Silvamord before the royal prisoners can be used as shields.

Story so far - through chapter 35 (this book)

The allies commit themselves to the fight for Castle Floret. Attacks and diversions pull the horde away from its strongest positions while creatures inside and outside the fortress work toward the prisoners. Mariel and Dandin take their places in the assault, and Joseph's reunion with his daughter is bound up with the need to finish the danger rather than simply escape it. Finnbarr confronts the coming battle with the same boldness that carried the expedition through the sea voyage. Gael can recover his family and kingdom only if the allied force survives the Foxwolf's final defence.

Story so far - through chapter 39 (this book)

Castle Floret is liberated. The allied woodlanders and otters break the occupying horde, free Serena and Truffen, and restore Gael as Squirrelking of Southsward. Silvamord and Urgan Nagru are killed in the final fighting, ending the Foxwolf's rule. Victory also brings a major loss: Finnbarr Galedeep dies in the battle after carrying Joseph's party safely to the war and helping make the assault possible. Joseph and Mariel are reunited, and the warning that began his journey is fulfilled. With Gael's family safe and the kingdom free, the surviving Redwall travellers can turn homeward, while Mariel and Dandin remain wanderers by choice. Southsward begins rebuilding and honours those who fell to recover it.

How does it end? (ending)

The resistance and Joseph's expedition combine for the assault on Castle Floret. Southsward's prisoners are freed and the occupying horde is defeated. Mariel settles her struggle with Silvamord, while Urgan Nagru is killed in the final fighting. Finnbarr Galedeep also dies in the battle, paying for victory with the life he had risked throughout the voyage. Gael is restored as Squirrelking with Serena and Truffen safe, and Southsward can begin recovering from the Foxwolf's rule. Joseph is reunited with Mariel, the danger foretold in his dream having brought him across sea and country to her. The surviving Redwall travellers prepare to return north, while Mariel and Dandin remain free to choose further roads rather than being bound permanently to either a court or the Abbey. The story closes with Castle Floret restored, but with Finnbarr and the other fallen remembered as the price of its liberation.
