An engineer surveying land west of Arkham for a new reservoir. Troubled by the area's lifeless gray waste and by local reluctance to discuss it, he seeks out Ammi Pierce and records the older man's account of what happened there decades earlier.

An elderly Arkham resident who lives near the ruined Gardner farm. Dismissed by many neighbors as unreliable, he is nevertheless the principal surviving witness to the strange decline of the land and family after an unusual object falls from the sky.

A farmer who lives with his wife and three sons in the hills west of Arkham. After a meteorite lands beside his well, he watches his flourishing farm become tainted and his household fall into isolation, illness, and fear.

Nahum Gardner's wife and the mother of their three sons. As the farm changes around the family, her health and behavior deteriorate until Nahum confines her in an upstairs room.
