A reservoir surveyor investigates a barren gray tract west of Arkham and hears its history from Ammi Pierce. In 1882, a strange meteorite landed near farmer Nahum Gardner's well. University researchers could neither classify nor preserve its material, which displayed an unprecedented color and gradually vanished. The next season brought enormous but inedible crops, deformed animals, altered vegetation, and a steady collapse of the Gardner family's health and sanity. One by one the family members died or disappeared as the farm lost all ordinary life. When Ammi returned with officials, they found the last ruins of the household and signs of horror in the well. That night, the color rose from the farm and shot into space, though Ammi saw a remnant fall back. The land became the blasted heath. Convinced that something still waits underground, the surveyor refuses to continue planning a reservoir that would cover the site and carry its water toward Arkham.

An engineer surveying a future reservoir west of Arkham finds a desolate tract known locally as the blasted heath. Seeking an explanation, he visits Ammi Pierce, who recalls the Gardner farm before the land died. In 1882, a meteorite struck beside the farm's well. Scientists from Miskatonic University found that its substance resisted normal tests, steadily shrank, and contained a small globule displaying a color outside ordinary experience. The material soon disappeared, but the following growing season produced huge crops that tasted foul. Plants, animals, and the landscape then developed unnatural shapes and behavior. The Gardners became isolated as Nahum's wife lost her sanity and his sons sickened or vanished. Ammi eventually accompanied officials to the farm, where they found Nahum dying, the house nearly deserted, and terrible evidence in the well. After dark, the trees and vegetation shone and moved while the color gathered over the property. It burst from the well, destroyed the farmstead, and streamed into the sky; Ammi alone saw a smaller remnant sink back into the earth. The surrounding acres became gray and lifeless. Accepting that the threat may remain below, the narrator leaves the reservoir project rather than help submerge the heath and distribute its water.

Ammi and several officials enter the nearly abandoned Gardner farm, where they find Nahum dying and the household destroyed. Evidence recovered from the well points to the missing family members, while an influence below begins to stir. After nightfall, the farm's remaining vegetation shines and writhes as the same impossible color gathers over the well. It surges upward and departs into the sky, tearing apart the farmstead and leaving the blasted land behind. Ammi sees a smaller trace fail to escape and sink back into the well. Years later, the narrator accepts that Ammi's account explains the dead landscape better than any ordinary theory. He abandons his survey work rather than help flood the site for Arkham's reservoir, fearing that the water would spread whatever remains beneath the heath.
