Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Yasuko Hanaoka (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

A divorced woman who works at the Benten-tei lunch shop and lives with her daughter, Misato. She has rebuilt a modest, independent life after leaving an abusive marriage, but her former husband Togashi continues to find and pressure her. When a confrontation in her apartment turns fatal, she accepts her neighbor Ishigami's offer to help.

Misato Hanaoka (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Yasuko's teenage daughter, who lives with her mother and resents Togashi for the fear and disruption he brings into their home. She becomes directly involved when his visit turns violent and must share the burden of the secret that follows.

Tetsuya Ishigami (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A quiet high-school mathematics teacher who lives next door to Yasuko. Once a mathematical prodigy, he now leads a solitary and rigorously ordered life. He has noticed Yasuko during his visits to the lunch shop and, after realizing what happened in her apartment, calmly offers to construct a plan that will protect her and Misato.

Shinji Togashi (Antagonist)

Appears from the start

Yasuko's former husband, whose violence, financial demands, and refusal to leave her alone drove her to divorce him and change jobs. He tracks her down again and enters her apartment demanding money, provoking the confrontation at the center of the investigation.

Shunpei Kusanagi (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

A Tokyo detective assigned to investigate a badly disfigured body found near the river. Practical and persistent, he knows physicist Manabu Yukawa from university and sometimes discusses baffling cases with him. The apparent victim's connection to Yasuko brings him repeatedly to her home and workplace.

Kishitani (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

A younger detective who works alongside Kusanagi on the murder inquiry. He helps trace the victim's movements, test Yasuko's account, and gather the ordinary details on which the case depends.

Mamiya (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

Kusanagi's superior in the police investigation. He coordinates the inquiry as the detectives identify the apparent victim, examine his recent movements, and look for weaknesses in the Hanaokas' alibi.

Manabu Yukawa (Supporting)

Also known as Detective Galileo

First appears in chapter 4

A university physicist and Kusanagi's old friend, known for applying analytical reasoning to unusual cases. At university he also knew Ishigami, whose mathematical gifts he still respects. Renewing that acquaintance makes him attentive to the difference between the problem the police see and the problem someone may have designed for them.

Kudo (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 8

A former customer from Yasuko's previous workplace who approaches her with sincere romantic interest. His appearance offers Yasuko the possibility of a happier future, while also adding an unpredictable element to the carefully controlled circumstances around her.
