Yasuko Hanaoka and her daughter Misato kill Yasuko's abusive former husband, Togashi, during a struggle in their apartment. Their neighbor, mathematics teacher Tetsuya Ishigami, discovers what happened and offers to protect them. When police investigate a disfigured body believed to be Togashi's, the Hanaokas have a strong alibi. Detective Kusanagi consults physicist Manabu Yukawa, who recognizes Ishigami as a brilliant former university classmate and gradually realizes that the alibi conceals a different problem from the one police are trying to solve. Ishigami killed an unrelated homeless man and used that body to shift the supposed time and identity of Togashi's murder, then surrendered with a false jealous-murder confession designed to save Yasuko. Yukawa reveals the plan to her privately. After Misato attempts suicide under the strain, Yasuko confesses the original killing, destroying Ishigami's sacrifice and leaving him overwhelmed by grief.

Yasuko Hanaoka lives with her teenage daughter, Misato, and works at a neighborhood lunch shop after escaping her abusive former husband, Shinji Togashi. Togashi finds her again, follows her home, and demands money. The confrontation becomes violent; Yasuko and Misato struggle with him and kill him in their apartment. Their next-door neighbor, Tetsuya Ishigami, hears enough to understand what has happened. A solitary mathematics teacher with an exceptional mind, he offers help rather than judgment. He takes control of the practical problem, instructing the two women to follow his directions exactly while he handles the body and begins constructing a defense around them.

A man's body is found near the river with its face and fingerprints destroyed. Detectives Kusanagi and Kishitani trace the evidence and come to believe the dead man is Togashi. Because Yasuko had a clear motive to fear him, they question her and Misato. Both give a detailed account of an evening spent away from home, supported by tickets and witnesses. Ishigami monitors the investigation and has prepared them for the questions. The police find the alibi unusually solid but cannot identify a direct contradiction. Kusanagi discusses the case with his university friend Manabu Yukawa, a physicist whose analytical insights have helped on earlier investigations.

Yukawa learns that the quiet neighbor beside the Hanaokas is Ishigami, whom he knew at university as an extraordinarily gifted mathematician. He renews contact under the appearance of friendship, while Ishigami recognizes that Yukawa may see beyond routine police reasoning. The detectives continue checking Yasuko's movements and Togashi's history, but every ordinary route leads back to the same obstacle: the women appear to have been elsewhere when he supposedly died. Yukawa begins treating the alibi as a deliberately designed problem. Meanwhile Kudo, a man who knew Yasuko from her former job, reenters her life and expresses romantic interest, introducing a personal development that Ishigami had not planned for and watches with increasing strain.

The investigation tightens without producing a conventional solution. Police attention remains fixed on proving that Yasuko's alibi is false, yet Yukawa suspects that this is precisely the task Ishigami wants them to attempt. He studies his old classmate's behavior, the timing of the body discovery, and the distinction between solving a problem and recognizing how the problem has been framed. Ishigami quietly pressures Yasuko to maintain the plan and treats Kudo's courtship as a risk. Yasuko grows increasingly uneasy about both the police and the degree of control her neighbor now exercises. Yukawa becomes convinced that Ishigami has made a far greater and darker sacrifice than simply helping dispose of Togashi's body.

Yukawa reconstructs the essential deception. The corpse found by the river was not Togashi. Ishigami killed an unknown homeless man and made that body appear to be connected to Togashi, shifting the police's assumed date and victim. Yasuko and Misato therefore did not need to fake their public movements: their alibi applied to a later crime engineered by Ishigami, not to the killing in their apartment. The police had been testing a solution to the wrong problem. Ishigami then presents himself to investigators with a confession that casts him as a jealous man who killed Togashi because of his fixation on Yasuko. His story is calculated to explain the evidence and close the case while leaving the Hanaokas outside it.

Ishigami remains committed to the false confession and accepts punishment as the final part of his design. Yukawa, disturbed by what his former classmate has done, tells Yasuko privately that Ishigami murdered a stranger, concealed Togashi's actual body, and surrendered his own future so that she and Misato could live free of suspicion. Yasuko initially follows the plan, but its human cost cannot stay hidden. Misato attempts suicide under the pressure of their secret and Ishigami's sacrifice. Yasuko then goes to the police station and admits that she and Misato killed Togashi. Her confession makes it impossible for Ishigami's account to stand. When she appears and asks to share responsibility, Ishigami realizes that the solution for which he destroyed two lives and his own has failed. He collapses in anguish as Yukawa listens nearby.

Yukawa works out that Ishigami did not merely conceal Togashi's death. He created a second murder with an unidentifiable victim so the police would assign the wrong date and body to the crime, turning Yasuko and Misato's genuine movements into an unbreakable alibi. Ishigami then surrenders and falsely claims that he killed Togashi out of jealous obsession, providing a complete story intended to remove suspicion from Yasuko. Yukawa privately tells Yasuko the scale of the sacrifice: Ishigami killed an unknown homeless man, disposed of Togashi, and arranged his own ruin for her sake. Yasuko initially remains silent, but Misato's suicide attempt makes living comfortably on that sacrifice impossible. She comes to the police station and confesses that she and Misato killed Togashi. Confronted with the collapse of the solution he built, Ishigami breaks down. His devotion fails to secure Yasuko's freedom because accepting it would require her to let him bear both murders alone.
