In short (whole book)
When Diligent is seized and Crisstof Dalton is blamed for lethal uprisings, Omega Force rescues Kellea Colleren and follows the ship's route to Solamea. Evidence hidden aboard Diligent exposes an expansionist Council faction that uses species-specific biodrones to manufacture rebellions and justify ConFed absorption. Doc admits that he once worked on the project and that its key scientist, Jevara, is his sister. After disrupting another intervention on Gryr-4, the crew loses Kellea to Steader Dalton and ConFed agent Alux. Omega Force turns the damaged Diligent into an autonomous weapon, destroys the mobile biodrone factory, and boards Steader's carrier to recover Kellea. Steader is left critically wounded and Alux escapes. Councilman Scleesz's opposing faction quietly contains the plot and frees Crisstof. Jason completes a favor that earns an overhaul of Phoenix and the removal of ConFed intelligence on Omega Force, while Kellea takes command of Defiant.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Jason Burke commands the mercenary unit Omega Force from Phoenix, with Lucky, Crusher, Doc, Twingo, and Kage forming his core crew. Their earlier conflicts left several matters unsettled. The vessel's original crew is still missing, and the status of synthetic beings remains a wider political concern. Twingo's exposure to a cartel has not been resolved. Bondrass, a syndicate figure, remains at large, as does a scientist tied to a genetics program. Crisstof Dalton has acted as a benefactor to Phoenix, establishing a connection that can draw Jason and his crew back into Dalton affairs.
Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)
Omega Force rescues Jason after his solo investigation of an arms-smuggling operation ends in capture and severe injury. The crew delivers the smuggler Corenntal to Kirialee Security, which executes him, then begins a short leave at O'rethal Platform. The break ends when reports accuse former benefactor Crisstof Dalton of supporting mass-casualty violence on Camderan-2. His frigate Diligent has been disabled, and its officers Kellea Colleren and Bostco are missing. A coded message from Kellea brings Phoenix to Kachamar City under a false identity. Jason, Crusher, and Lucky find her and escape a closing ConFed search. Bostco is reported killed during an attempted arrest. Phoenix stages an atmospheric crash, breaks through the orbital cordon, and escapes despite damage to its slip-drive. Kellea is safe aboard, but Crisstof's location and the reason for the accusations remain unknown.
Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)
Kellea explains that a ConFed task force attacked Diligent, arrested Crisstof, and detained its crew after a series of unlikely uprisings. Omega Force traces Diligent's route to Solamea, where the normally peaceful kelpens have committed unprecedented violence. Survivor i'iteren describes attackers who appeared kelpen, while a ConFed ship later bombarded a city. The team recovers a malformed organic object that resembles a kelpen but shows no sign of ever having lived. A call to Steader Dalton reveals that Crisstof is imprisoned on heavily defended Aracoria. Jason coerces Crisstof's lawyer, Tellumn-Allute, into arranging a prison visit. Crisstof secretly directs Jason to a safe aboard Diligent. Kellea locates the impounded frigate at RU933, and she, Jason, and Lucky cross its passive detection grid in an unpowered space drift. They enter Diligent and recover documents, data chips, and an auxiliary recorder from the hidden safe. Phoenix extracts them before the contents can be examined, while an unidentified large ship maneuvers nearby.
Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)
Crisstof's evidence reveals that an expansionist Council faction manufactures species-specific biodrones to imitate local populations, provoke uprisings, and create a pretext for ConFed political absorption. The large vessel at RU933 is a mobile biodrone factory. Doc admits that he is Dr. Jorvren Ma'Fredich, brother of project participant Jevara Da'Chelic, and that he concealed his own former work on the program. Jason keeps him on the mission but delays deciding his future with Omega Force. Kage improves a model that predicts Gryr-4 as the next target. There, Omega Force defeats the ConFed assault without preserving the local regime, denying the intervention force control of the world. Five more outbreaks follow. At a rendezvous with Steader, ConFed Special Operations agents seize Kellea. Jason and Crusher disable their attack craft and confirm Steader's cooperation with the conspiracy. Omega Force races back to RU933, arriving before Steader's carrier and finding the factory ship still there.
Story so far - through chapter 23 (this book)
Agent Alux, a ConFed Intelligence operative assigned to Special Operations, takes control of Kellea's interrogation and seeks information about Omega Force. Meanwhile, the crew returns to Diligent and restores enough power to use it against the factory. Kage programs the drone Number Two to steer the frigate, while Twingo installs four high-yield anti-matter missiles for remote detonation. Steader's carrier Stalwart arrives to collect biodrones for as many as twelve worlds. Steader admits that he betrayed Crisstof because he expects ConFed expansion to bring him power. Number Two drives Diligent through the carrier's defenses and into the factory ship. Twingo detonates the payload, splitting the factory and sending its drive section into the gas giant before the Stalwart can load its cargo. Alux prevents Steader from killing Kellea and keeps her as a hostage. The factory is destroyed, but Kellea remains aboard the carrier as Phoenix closes in.
Story so far - through chapter 26 (this book)
Phoenix enters the Stalwart's hangar, and Jason, Lucky, and Crusher fight toward Kellea while Kage locates her on the bridge. Debris from the ruined factory knocks the carrier into a decaying orbit. Lucky frees Kellea, Crusher drives back Alux, and Jason wounds Steader. Alux escapes during the withdrawal, while the critically injured Steader is left aboard the falling Stalwart. Phoenix escapes but loses its grav-drive and is intercepted by Councilman Scleesz. He explains that four expansionist Council members, rather than the Council as a whole, organized the biodrone scheme. His faction will suppress the truth, deal with the conspirators privately, and release Crisstof. Jason agrees to discretion and completes an unspecified favor for Scleesz in exchange for purging ConFed intelligence records on Omega Force. Phoenix receives an extensive overhaul. Crisstof reunites with Kellea, and Jason intends to renew their working relationship. Kellea parts amicably from Omega Force and takes command of the battlecruiser Defiant. Alux, Jevara, active biodrones, and their shutdown code remain unresolved.
How does it end? (ending)
Omega Force destroys the mobile biodrone factory by converting Diligent into an unmanned strike craft, then boards the failing Stalwart and rescues Kellea. Agent Alux escapes, while the critically wounded Steader is left aboard the carrier as it falls into the gas giant. Councilman Scleesz explains that four expansionist Council members ran the conspiracy and that his faction will contain it privately. Crisstof is released, but the public does not learn why he was framed. Jason completes an unspecified favor for Scleesz, who arranges an overhaul for Phoenix and purges ConFed intelligence records on Omega Force. Kellea leaves on friendly terms to command Defiant, and Jason plans renewed dealings with Crisstof. Omega Force remains together, although Doc's ultimate standing is unsettled. Alux, Jevara, deployed biodrones, and the missing shutdown code remain open threats, while the political truth is suppressed.
