The Fallen Goddess

By J.D. Franx

The fifth book in the Darkness Within Saga opens with an ancient account of two gods who sacrificed themselves to seal away a faction's magic after its abuses against other peoples. In the present, a mysterious illness leaves Kael and several others comatose at the mountain fortress, forcing his wife Ember to use forbidden dark magic to save two afflicted children while a hostile presence contests Kael's mind directly. As Max leads search parties into the fortress's unexplored tunnels after a missing patrol, they discover a hidden village that captures outsiders for sacrifice to corrupted creatures beneath the mountain, leading to a violent confrontation to free the prisoners. Meanwhile, the same faction from the prologue pursues its own plans to recover lost magic, aided by an undercover operative trying to learn whether it caused Kael's affliction.
