In short (whole book)

A magical illness incapacitates Kael and other powerful casters while an ancient mage-race uses towers to recover magic once taken from it. Ember investigates the threat, Max uncovers a hidden community below the fortress, and Kael awakens with damaged powers and a hostile spirit contesting him. The invaders seize Stillwater and use a new tower to trap an allied army. Kael's group escapes to the aperture, where the Tree of Life is revealed as the failing lock on the invaders' original magic. Ember replaces the imprisoned goddess of death as the tree's sustainer and disintegrates, leaving her fate uncertain. Kael joins his yin with the restored goddess, rescues two wounded ancient dragons, and helps destroy most of the enemy camp at the Black Chasm. The tower and enemy leadership survive. Kael returns to his fortress, detains the enemy leader's dissident daughter, and faces new threats from the spirit in his cursed object and a death wizard apparently escaping the afterlife.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Kael, a death wizard, established a mountain fortress as a refuge and worked with his wife Ember, the Fae High Matriarch, and his veteran ally Max. A vampire scout and an allied necromancer queen also became important partners. The fortress began drawing settlers and children associated with the Black Sun, including Kenna, a developing death wizard who learned under Kael. Kael's allies were still turning the recovered stronghold into a durable settlement and organizing its defenses. Beyond the fortress, their coalition remained tied to a realm seeking relief from its former international sanctions. Kael also attempted to return two ancient dragons from another universe. That effort failed, leaving the dragons' survival and location uncertain. The death wizard's unusual powers, his ties to the Fae, and the growing group around the fortress placed him at the center of conflicts extending well beyond his new territory. The ancient threats already connected to his past had not been fully resolved.

Story so far - through chapter 4 (this book)

Long ago, a god of life and a goddess of death stripped an abusive mage-race of nearly all its magic and sealed that power beyond a black tree. The goddess gave herself to the prison, while the god surrendered his divinity and died slowly. Elsewhere, a wounded dragon queen, a black dragon, and five eggs hid inside a crystal tomb. In the present, a worldwide magical illness leaves Kael, Kenna, and other powerful casters comatose. Ember enters afflicted children's dreams with forbidden dark Fae magic and finds an intelligent hostile presence. Kael's uncontrolled red lightning makes his condition especially dangerous, while Max organizes the fortress defenses. At the Black Chasm, the ancient mage-race's leader has recovered limited magic through a tower. She and her high priest plan to capture a death wizard to recharge power stones and investigate old cities that could expand the tower's reach. A former Salsarin knight joins the mission, then secretly confirms that she is infiltrating the group to investigate both the illness and Kael's failed dragon-return spell.

Story so far - through chapter 11 (this book)

The magical assault has damaged Kael's ability to draw power and trapped him in an internal struggle. A hostile ancient wizard spirit claims to have survived inside his weapons, isolates Kael's original linked spirit, and seeks his body. Meanwhile, Max, his vampire companion, and a soldier search the fortress caverns for a missing patrol. They discover a hidden village protected by memory-altering magic. After learning that four patrol members are being offered to corrupted cave creatures, Max deliberately surrenders to reach them. His group escapes captivity and frees the prisoners, only for the villagers to drive them toward three waiting monsters. Ember's rescue force arrives in time to turn the battle. She uses life-draining dark magic, while an allied necromancer queen raises the dead. One captive dies, but Ember saves a gravely wounded necromancer by transferring life energy from a village official. The village Magus then reveals a functioning Fae travel obelisk and the community's descent from the old fortress settlement. Ember and Max secure a conditional truce, though distrust, the village's curse, and the spreading corruption remain unresolved.

Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)

The illness is confirmed as a simultaneous worldwide attack on magic users, with casting able to trigger relapse or death. Ember agrees to represent the Fae at an emergency World Council summit and prepares to investigate a tower rising at the Black Chasm. A Fae elder offers to teach her control over the dark inheritance surfacing in her spells. A fallen god searches beneath an ancient library for the aperture and a missing goddess, then heads toward Kael's fortress. Kael and Kenna awaken, but Kael's magic now injures him and strange growths consume the spells he attempts. He permits the fallen god to investigate below the fortress and begins an alliance with the nearby hidden community. In newly opened burial tunnels, Kael, the allied queen, and the community leader find an altar tied to the fortress grounds. The allied queen destroys its constructed guardian, and Kael discovers that his red magic can remove the guardian's lethal toxin without the usual backlash. Elsewhere, a human apprentice serving the invading high priest traces restricted reagents through a criminal syndicate and gains a route into Demon Bone Swamp, where a coven leader is preparing a dangerous transformation ritual.

Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)

The invading high priest's party enters Demon Bone Swamp to obtain the coven's captive death wizard. The coven leader completes her transformation and releases the heavily sedated prisoner into their custody. During the escape, the human apprentice protects him from swamp creatures, and the party reaches the ruins of an ancient city of power with its power stones nearly exhausted. At the Black Chasm, Ember's group confirms that a black tower is tearing through natural magic. A powerful shaman blocks their retreat until Ember forces an emergency jump with darker power. They also witness a large enemy fleet sailing south. Kael prepares to attend the summit with Kenna and the allied queen, using the hidden village's Fae obelisk as a shortcut. They emerge at a keep near Stillwater and discover the enemy fleet attacking the town. At Corinth, Ember supports victims of the prolonged illness and seeks political allies. She gains a private hearing with an emperor who distrusts members of his own government, but she still cannot reach Kael and does not yet know that he has diverted toward the invasion.

Story so far - through chapter 29 (this book)

Kael, Kenna, and the allied queen reconnoiter occupied Stillwater, where roughly a thousand invaders use magical patrols and hounds to seal the town. They rescue escaping researchers, and Kael takes an eyewitness scholar to Corinth while two allies remain behind to divert pursuit. At the World Council, Ember helps restore the allied realm's full standing and identifies Kael as the registered noble of the fortress lands. Kael's party enters Corinth despite continuing interference with magical communications, and he receives formal recognition and protection. Assassins then breach the citadel, though their intended target and employer remain unclear. Reunited with Ember and Max, Kael brings the Stillwater witness before the summit. The invading leader admits annexing the town to obtain ruins needed to restore her people's magic and asks for access to further ancient sites. The eyewitness contradicts her claim that the occupation was bloodless, hardening international opposition. Masked attackers then strike the invading leader in the ballroom and badly wound her before her guards carry her away. The occupation is now treated as an act of war, but the attacks' sponsor remains unknown.

Story so far - through chapter 33 (this book)

An allied army moves to retake Stillwater with Kael, Ember, Max, and the vampire companion in the field force. The invading leader uses a parley to delay them until a new tower rises beside the ruins. Its reach restores powerful ancient magic across the battlefield, turns Kael's own energy against him, and disables allied casters. Kael is impaled by magical spikes, and Ember keeps him alive by draining captured enemies, accelerating the dark change overtaking her. The fallen god shields their escape and remains behind as the group jumps to the aperture. There they learn that he is the god of life and that the Tree of Life is the lock containing the invaders' stolen power. Every enemy tower wounds that lock. Kael and Ember are forced through the tree and find the goddess of death sustaining both the prison and the afterlife. Because the failing structure needs a replacement, Ember agrees to take over. She disintegrates during the transfer, with no certainty whether she died or became part of the tree. Kael returns with the freed goddess, while their allies prepare for a wider war and the invaders move toward a crossing at the Black Chasm.

Story so far - through chapter 37 (this book)

The restored goddess explains that open war will become catastrophic if the ancient mage-race regains all its power. Kael accepts a yin union with her, restoring her strength and giving him extraordinary energy at the cost of severe strain on his mortal body and a future obligation to her people. They travel to the fast-time universe where the ancient dragons were stranded and find the dragon queen and black dragon alive inside crystal, badly wounded and guarding eggs. The queen is now blind and scarred. After hostile beings discover them, Kael and the goddess wake both dragons and bring them home. Kael, the goddess, and the dragons then devastate the enemy camp at the Black Chasm, killing most of its troops and specialists. The black tower survives, as do the enemy leader and her blinded high priest. They recover power stones and renew plans to cross the chasm. At Kael's fortress, the enemy leader's ether-channeling daughter infiltrates through an old defensive flaw and offers to recruit dissidents against her mother. Kael removes her access to ether and detains her. He then sees a death wizard escaping the afterlife with an unconscious boy and confirms that the hostile spirit displaced his original weapon-bound companion. The war and all these threats remain open.

How does it end? (ending)

Ember takes the goddess of death's place as the power sustaining the Tree of Life, the afterlife, and the prison holding the ancient mage-race's original magic. Ember breaks apart during the transfer, and it remains unknown whether she died or became part of the tree. Kael leaves with the restored goddess, joins his yin with hers, and retrieves the wounded white and black dragons from the fast-time universe. Together they devastate the enemy camp at the Black Chasm, but its tower survives. The enemy leader orders her injured high priest to find a crossing and continues preparing conquest. Back at his fortress, Kael detains the leader's ether-channeling daughter after she offers access to dissidents and unconventional allies. He remains physically unstable, carries the hostile spirit in his cursed object, and sees a death wizard escaping the afterlife with an unconscious boy. The war, Ember's fate, the failing magical prison, the dragons' recovery, and Kael's new obligations remain unresolved.
