The Flowers of Vashnoi

This novella-length entry in the Vorkosigan Saga follows Ekaterin and Miles Vorkosigan as they inspect an experimental cleanup project in the Vashnoi nuclear exclusion zone, where genetically engineered radbugs are meant to strip radioactive contamination from the soil. When many of the insects go missing and hidden footage reveals a barefoot boy taking them from the test plot, Ekaterin and the project's lead scientist track the theft to a concealed settlement inside the irradiated zone. There they find a small group of people, including a severely ill teenage girl, who have survived hidden from the outside world for years, raising urgent questions about how they got there and what will happen to them now that they have been found.
