An Imperial Auditor, Count Piotr's heir, and owner of the Vashnoi exclusion zone. He finances a project intended to restore the damaged land and joins the response when signs of an unknown intruder complicate its first field trial.
Ekaterin Vorkosigan (Protagonist)

Appears from the start
Miles's wife and the official directing the response at Vashnoi. She inspects the experimental cleanup plot, recognizes that the missing radbugs may signal danger to a trespasser, and takes charge of investigating the concealed settlement.
Enrique Borgos (Supporting)
Appears from the start
An Escobaran scientist directing the radbug project at Hassadar. His engineered insects draw radioactive material out of vegetation and leave usable soil, but theft and missing specimens compromise the first outdoor test.
Vadim Sammi (Supporting)
Appears from the start
The district ranger and pilot assigned to the Vashnoi area. He has assisted Enrique with the outdoor radbug plot and helps search the exclusion zone after many of the experimental insects disappear.
Count Piotr (Minor)

Miles's grandfather, a former Count Vorkosigan and the former owner of the Vashnoi exclusion zone. The contaminated territory passed to Miles through his inheritance, leaving the younger count responsible for its restoration.
Ingisi (Supporting)

An albino boy living in the concealed settlement. He is the boy recorded taking radbugs from the test plot, but he brought them to the gravely ill Jadwiga as a gift and treats her as a close companion.
Jadwiga (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
A fifteen-year-old resident of the hidden settlement and Ma Roga's foster child. Severely ill from radiation exposure, she initially mistakes the visitors in protective suits for threatening apparitions and is especially close to Ingisi.
Ma Roga (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
The older guardian who heads the concealed household in the exclusion zone. She resists removing its residents because she believes evacuation will lead to the death of their animals and the breakup of the family she protects.
Boris (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
Ma Roga's biological son and a resident of the hidden settlement. He returns to find Ekaterin and Enrique inside the household and joins Ma Roga in resisting outside intervention.
Roic (Minor)
First appears in chapter 3
Miles's armsman. He accompanies Miles to Hassadar General while Ekaterin is held in quarantine after entering the radioactive settlement.
