In short (whole book)

As the Goblin Lord marches across Izril, Rags defends her independent tribe, Laken Godart builds the Unseen Empire through victories over goblin raiders, and Erin gives five Redfang Hobgoblins refuge at the Wandering Inn. In the Blighted Kingdom, Tom survives a demonic palace assault, kills the traitorous court fool, and learns that the king sacrificed unborn children to summon people from Earth. Liscor confronts the Raskgar threat, evidence that a missing Horn may still live, and turmoil among its individual Antinium. Zel Shivertail allies with Magnolia Reinhart, takes command of a northern human army, and attacks the Goblin Lord. The Necromancer uses his apprentice as bait and traps Zel with elite undead. Zel gravely wounds the Goblin Lord but is infected, overwhelmed, and apparently dies after letting his wounded opponent go. The Goblin Lord and the Necromancer survive, leaving the northern war and Magnolia's peace project unresolved.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Erin established the Wandering Inn outside Liscor as a refuge for an increasingly varied circle of friends and guests. Lyonette helps her run it and cares for Mrsha, a young Gnoll orphan carrying deep grief. Bird and Pawn are among the individual Antinium connected to Erin, while the adventuring team known as the Horns of Hammerad includes Ceria, Yvlon, Ksmvr, and the necromancer Pisces. Olesm serves Liscor as a tactician and shares Erin's interest in chess. Rags has grown from a lone young goblin into a chieftain, and Erin's belief that goblins are people has repeatedly placed her at odds with accepted opinion. Liscor also faces the newly opened dungeon and the danger surrounding it. Across Izril, Magnolia Reinhart commands extensive political and material resources, while the advance of a Goblin Lord threatens both human and Drake lands.

Story so far - through chapter 5 (this book)

The Goblin Lord's enormous army passes Liscor and tries to force other goblins into its ranks. Garen Redfang refuses to submit. Rags, meanwhile, retaliates after adventurers massacre another tribe, attacking a human town but refusing to kill its surviving inhabitants. In the Blighted Kingdom, Tom and the surviving Americans are brought before the king after service at the front. Tom is traumatized by his earlier violence and increasingly troubled by a hostile clown presence within his mind. A court fool helps him survive an awkward royal performance and befriends him, but demons infiltrate the palace. Tom saves a young princess and is celebrated, even as he discovers the clown persona can alter his appearance and actions without consent. A larger demon force then teleports into the courtyard. The clown persona takes control, identifies the court fool as the infiltrator who compromised the palace wards, and helps defeat the assault. The fool turns against the king and dies fighting Tom. Before his death, he reveals that the king sacrificed ten thousand unborn children to summon sixty people from Earth and intends a much larger sacrifice. Tom is left grieving, uncertain of his own agency, and trapped in the king's war.

Story so far - through chapter 9 (this book)

At the Wandering Inn, Erin tries to strengthen the building while Zel Shivertail warns that the Goblin Lord is marching north. Six starving Redfang warriors, now Hobgoblins, travel toward Liscor. Bird attacks them from the inn, but they later choose to defend a Gnoll village from Eater Goats. Bug Ear dies buying time for the others. Erin recognizes what the group has done, helps finish the fight, and invites the five survivors into her inn. She blocks attacks by adventurers and Liscor's Watch and accepts responsibility for their presence. Their sanctuary remains precarious: customers flee, allies carry old wounds from goblin violence, and Zel cannot bear to stay under the same roof. Elsewhere, Laken Godart expands the territory known as the Unseen Empire. His markers extend his awareness, while Wiscaria organizes defenders, Durene serves as his champion, and Beniar leads cavalry. After repeated goblin raids, nearby settlements seek Laken's protection. He assembles a regional force to relieve a besieged noble estate, uses imperial authority to disrupt the goblins, and wins at substantial cost. The victory makes his domain a real political and military power, but also forces him to accept responsibility for ordering people into lethal battles.

Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)

Olesm investigates the dungeon creatures and learns that they are Raskgar, subterranean enemies of Gnollkind. A discrepancy in old crypt records suggests that the Horns of Hammerad's missing Minotaur may not have died with the others. With a magical Ring of Sight sent by Niers Astoragon, Olesm and Pisces find an illusory doorway, a trapped route, and traces consistent with the missing adventurer having fought onward. The evidence is incomplete, but Pisces tells Ceria that survival is possible. Olesm and Pisces also move from hostility toward professional respect. Ilvriss learns that the Necromancer murdered the officer he loved and that Regrika Blackpaw's history points to a pattern of disguised agents. Zel Shivertail travels north through Erin's magical door to meet Magnolia Reinhart. Her butler Reynold drives through goblin forces to save fleeing civilians and deliver him safely. Magnolia and Zel agree to cooperate against the Goblin Lord and the Necromancer as a first step toward her ambition of peace. Rags faces an elite force of Rose Knights whose enchanted equipment defeats her tribe's usual weapons. Greybeard reveals remarkable swordsmanship, saves the retreat, and then identifies himself as a former Goblin Lord who served the previous Goblin King. He judges Rags unready for lordship and leaves, but Pyrite supports her. Rags retains command, builds a forest fort, and repels the knights' next attack.

Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)

The Antinium defending tunnels near Liscor's dungeon suffer repeated casualties. Sergeant Yellow Splatters values his soldiers but grows angry over the losses and suspicious of Pawn's priorities. He also resents Purple Smile, whose more flexible leadership is earning consideration for promotion. Belgrade and Anand pursue different tactical approaches, while the painted soldiers preserve the symbols of their dead. The discovery that Twin Stripes has become an aberration despite being an individual undermines the hope that individuality alone prevents such collapse. At the Wandering Inn, the Redfang guests remain isolated and Mrsha cannot set aside her trauma over the goblins who killed her tribe. She places broken porcelain outside their room, but Erin is hurt instead. During a later confrontation, Yellow Splatters attacks Purple Smile over a perceived slight. Mrsha bites Head Scratcher and uses Pisces' wand against Bad Arrow, injuring his ear. Ksmvr forces the two Antinium soldiers apart before their fight can become fatal. Erin then takes control of the room, orders everyone to remain seated, ensures Bad Arrow receives treatment, and apologizes to the goblins. The numbered story ends with the immediate violence stopped, but Erin still responsible for restoring trust among wounded groups sharing the inn.

How does it end? (ending)

The numbered story closes with the Wandering Inn and Liscor's hive both in crisis. Erin has sheltered five Redfang Hobgoblins, but Mrsha's grief erupts into attacks on them, while Yellow Splatters' jealousy drives him to assault Purple Smile. Erin halts the confrontation and insists on treatment for Bad Arrow. Beyond the numbered chapters, Erin secures a fragile coexistence at the inn, and Pawn's blessing restores Twin Stripes while Yellow Splatters accepts Purple Smile as a fellow sergeant. Rags remains an independent chieftain under pressure from human forces and the Goblin Lord. In the northern campaign, Zel Shivertail commands Magnolia Reinhart's improvised human army against the Goblin Lord. He reaches and severely wounds the enemy commander, only to discover that the Necromancer has made the Goblin Lord bait for a prepared ambush. Magical plague and repeated attacks leave Zel apparently dead, while the wounded Goblin Lord survives and the Necromancer escapes with his remaining creations. Magnolia and Reynold survive the immediate engagement, but Zel's loss leaves the coalition's command and the larger peace effort uncertain. Tom remains in the Blighted Kingdom, aware of the king's summoning crimes and still struggling with the clown presence that can control him. The Horns' missing teammate may be alive, but no rescue has yet confirmed it.
