The Hope Of Elantris characters

By Brandon Sanderson

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Matisse (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

A girl taken by the Shaod and thrown into Elantris young enough still to be counted among the city's children. She has taken responsibility for the younger ones, works alongside Karata in looking after them, and is trusted to keep them safe when the adults are occupied elsewhere. She is more capable than her age suggests and takes the duty seriously.

Karata (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The Elantrian who has made herself responsible for the children thrown into the city, and who once led one of the factions that divided it. Practical and protective, she is the reason the children have anywhere organised to go at all.

Ashe (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A seon: a floating ball of light with a glowing character at its heart, able to carry speech between others of its kind. He serves Princess Sarene and is inside Elantris with her, which makes him one of the few things in the city that can move quickly and see what is happening elsewhere.

Raoden (Supporting)

Also known as Spirit

Appears from the start

The man who has organised the survivors of Elantris into a working community, known inside the city as Spirit. His authority is why Elantris has an ordered settlement and a place for its children rather than only gangs.

Sarene (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Princess of Teod, now inside Elantris herself, who has been working alongside Raoden to hold the community together. Ashe serves her, and her presence in the city is part of why help can reach the children at all.
