The Hope Of Elantris recap
Every recap below is hidden until you open it. Each one is safe to read once you have finished the chapter it names.
In short (whole book)
During the Fjordell attack on Elantris, the adults who normally look after the city's children are drawn away by the fighting, and Matisse, a girl barely older than her charges, is left responsible for them. With help from the seon Ashe, who can move and see where she cannot, she leads the children through the ruined city and hides them while the invaders sweep through. They survive the night, and the story closes as Elantris is restored and its people, the children included, are healed. It is a short companion piece to the novel, told from the perspective of the youngest people in the city during its worst night.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously, in Elantris: the shining city of Elantris fell ten years ago when its magic failed, leaving its people grey, permanently wounded and sealed behind its walls, and anyone the transformation takes since is declared dead and thrown inside. Prince Raoden of Arelon, taken himself and given up for dead, has organised the city's survivors into a working community under the name Spirit, and Princess Sarene of Teod has joined him inside the walls. Karata, once the leader of one of the city's factions, looks after the children who are thrown in, with Matisse helping her. Outside, a Fjordell invasion is closing on Arelon and on Elantris. This story takes place during that attack, following the children while the novel follows the adults.
Story so far - through chapter 1 (this book)
Fjordell warriors attack Elantris while the people who would normally protect the city's children are occupied with the fighting elsewhere. Matisse, left in charge, has to move a group of frightened young children out of the invaders' path and hide them somewhere that will not be searched. The seon Ashe helps her, scouting ahead through streets she cannot see into and warning her which way the attack is moving. They get the children hidden and wait out the assault. The night ends with the city's magic restored and the Elantrians healed, so the children emerge into a restored Elantris.
How does it end? (ending)
Matisse gets the children clear of the fighting and hidden where the invaders do not find them, with Ashe scouting ahead and warning her where the attackers are. They wait out the assault on the city in hiding. The night ends with Raoden completing the work that restores Elantris: the city's magic returns, the Elantrians are healed, and the children come out of hiding into a restored city rather than a ruin. The story is a companion piece to the novel, filling in what became of Elantris's children during the invasion, and it closes on the same restoration that ends the novel, seen from inside the group everyone had been trying to protect.
