The Land: Forging recap

Richter strengthens the Mist Village by planting a blessed seed core, creating a quickening that awakens Elora, the surviving Pixie Queen, and seals an alliance with Hisako's wood sprites. The quickening exposes the village during a lapse in its protective mist, leading to a destructive bugbear assault. The defenders prevail, but Modara escapes and Richter swears vengeance. Richter then enters a Time Worn Dungeon with Sion, Yoshi, Daniella, Alma, and Futen. They overcome traps, undead, and the Crypt Mistress, free the Tefonim dead, and survive Sion's painful trial concerning Kurian's death. Richter gains life mastery and removes the dungeon's Magic Core. After Hisako cures the returning party, she warns that Richter's awakened power will attract stronger monsters. Eaters have attacked, bugbears remain active, and Richter must seek dwarf allies in the Serrated Mountains. Randolphus closes the story by reporting unidentified prisoners at the village.

Previously: Richter entered the Land and became master of the Mist Village. The wood sprite Sion became his companion and scout. Sion's mother Hisako, the Hearth Mother of her people, became Richter's ally, as did the warrior Yoshi. Richter's new settlement brought together people who now depend on his leadership and protection. Terrod joined him as a companion and guard leader, but still carries an obligation to help free captives connected to the Night Blades. Isabel, whom Terrod loves, survived captivity linked to the noble Count Stonuk and is recovering in the village. Several dangers remain beyond the settlement. Ronan, the surviving Night Blades leader, is at large and knows Richter's group. Count Stonuk remains alive in Yves and may retaliate after being robbed without a direct confrontation. Richter also owes the imp Xuetrix a binding favor whose future terms and purpose are unknown. Richter therefore begins this volume responsible for a growing community, an unfinished captive search, a dangerous personal debt, and hostile figures who have not yet been brought to account.

The Light Court detects stable traces of raw chaos at several locations and learns that a surviving pixie chrysalis has reached a Life Master in the River Peninsula. The King of Light orders observation while privately recalling that he caused the plague that destroyed the pixies. Hisako asks Richter and Sion to investigate goblin and bugbear camps advancing from the east. She also blesses a recovered seed core so Richter can plant it at the Mist Village and use its released life energy to revive the chrysalis. During preparations, Yoshi begins teaching Richter swordsmanship, Sumiko joins as a prospective ambassador and Life Magic instructor, and Futen advises waiting for a storm that will strengthen the planting. Richter also summons a female Psi Dragonling as his soul familiar, temporarily spending the mana needed to maintain the village's protective mist. The planting creates a powerful quickening. Elora wakes as the sole surviving royal Pixie Queen, binds herself to the tree, and becomes Richter's companion and its caretaker. Richter pledges to protect her, and he and Hisako formally unite the village with her people.

Richter names his Psi Dragonling Alma and tells Sion that he has chosen the Land as his home. The celebration is followed by a nighttime bugbear assault. The quickening's burst of light had revealed the village while the Confusing Mist was down, allowing attackers to breach the defenses and burn the longhouse. Richter, Hisako, Sion, Daniella, Yoshi, Alma, and the villagers mount a defense. Hisako summons a celestial servant, Yoshi kills the bugbear leader, and Alma exposes an ambush hidden by dark magic. Hisako then recognizes Modara, a dark-elf necromancer from her past, among the enemy casters. Modara raises skeletons while Hisako shields the defenders. At dawn Richter restores the mist, and the survivors use it to regroup and hunt the invaders. Yoshi kills Modara's allied dark mage, collapsing the skeletons, and no bugbear escapes. Modara kills a sprite and flees through a tear in space. The village mourns its dead and begins rebuilding. Richter publicly accepts responsibility for lowering its protection, organizes continuous guards, and awakens air magic in new village students. He also swears to avenge the attack's responsible parties within one year.

After the attack, Richter prioritizes a smithy and stronger village production. Krom pledges fealty and becomes Smith of the Mist Village, while Gloran explains the soul stones and materials needed for enchanting. The villagers debate using a Magic Core to create a magic forge, but better base metal must be found first. Richter chooses an honorable governing tenet, arranges a trade mission to Leafs Crossing, and prepares to unlock another of his powers. Hisako assigns Yoshi and Daniella to join Richter, Sion, Alma, and Futen on the expedition. The group enters a concealed dungeon, but Richter triggers its mechanism and drops everyone underground. They discover they are trapped in a Time Worn Dungeon whose entrance route has collapsed. A swarm of predatory beetles attacks, and the party escapes through a corroded door after Richter loosens its mechanism. Yoshi identifies the infestation as a returning forest danger, and Richter agrees to destroy its nest. The group then reaches a chamber covered in traps. Yoshi begins teaching Richter how to detect and disarm them, but supplies and tools are being consumed as the party pauses partway across.

The dungeon party crosses the trapped chamber and studies several deadly doors. A riddle opens the red route into a water-filled cavern, where Richter swims behind a waterfall, disables lightning-crystal defenses, and retrieves valuable equipment from a dead noble who had been seeking an unidentified family artifact called the link. The bone-door route leads to undead Fades. A Pillar of Life suppresses their defenses, allowing the party to destroy them and clear the sepulcher. Farther in, eight Drow Elite Guards surround a central crypt. Richter and Yoshi disarm a nearby chest while Futen dismantles its layered magical wards, gaining the bone key and hatch wheel needed to continue. Although the group can now pursue an exit, Richter accepts a quest to free the guards from the Crypt Mistress controlling them, and Yoshi stays to help. The assault leaves Sion and Daniella unconscious and Yoshi badly injured. The Crypt Mistress revives her guards, spreads a debilitating disease, and shields herself behind a barrier. Alma's psychic attack helps Richter turn one guard against the others. Richter cracks the barrier, strikes with life magic and a mana-heavy arrow, captures the Crypt Mistress's soul, and kills her.

Richter and his companions survive the crypt battle but contract cankerous rot, which their weak healing cannot cure. By returning the former queen's remains to her sarcophagus, Richter releases the Tefonim Queen, her consort, and their warriors from undead control. The queen grants him an inherited skill, and he chooses Portal Construction. Her treasure also contains specialized metals that may serve the village's future magic forge. The next passage isolates Sion and forces him to relive the childhood death of Kurian. Human animal-capturers seized the two boys after they tried to free captive creatures, then tortured and killed Kurian. The dungeon repeats the memory until Sion accepts that the outcome arose from both boys' choices, the captors' evil, and chance, rather than from his fault alone. He survives the trial, gains resistance to enchantment, later explains his former hostility to Richter, and apologizes. Richter solves the dungeon's final door mechanism and chooses mastery of life, gaining stronger Life Magic and the ability to teach it to qualified users. Before leaving, he removes the dungeon's Magic Core. The party postpones the lower stairway and its eater threat until they can recover and return with help.

While returning through the forest, Richter's party mistakes two concealed watchers for enemies and ambushes Jitol, a Mist Village hunter, breaking his leg. They splint the injury and carry him home. Because Richter, Sion, Daniella, and Yoshi still have cankerous rot, Richter keeps the group outside the village until healers can prevent an outbreak. Hisako cures the disease and heals Jitol, while Sumiko confirms the others are clear. The dungeon expedition has succeeded: the Crypt Mistress is dead, the Tefonim dead are free, Sion has survived his personal trial, and Richter has gained life mastery and a Magic Core. The victory also exposes a larger strategic danger. Hisako explains that awakening Richter's place of power will attract stronger monsters and empower creatures already nearby. Yoshi reports that eaters have attacked, causing Hisako to place that threat above the continuing bugbear problem. She sends Sion and Daniella with sprite warriors to investigate, assigns Sumiko to Yoshi's internal injuries, and seeks help from northern wood elves. Richter receives a mandatory mission to win dwarf allies in the Serrated Mountains, possibly by purchasing their support. The story ends when Randolphus reports that the village is holding unidentified prisoners.

Richter, Sion, Yoshi, Daniella, Alma, and Futen return from the Time Worn Dungeon alive. The Crypt Mistress is dead, the Tefonim dead are free, and Sion has accepted that Kurian's murder was not solely his fault. Richter is level 18, has chosen mastery of life, and carries the dungeon's Magic Core, though the lower stairway and the eaters below remain unexamined. Hisako cures the party's cankerous rot and heals Jitol. Sumiko begins treating Yoshi's lingering internal injury, whose complete effect is still concealed. The larger danger has increased: awakening Richter's place of power will draw and strengthen monsters, bugbears remain in the region, and an eater attack takes priority. Hisako sends Sion and Daniella to investigate, calls for northern wood-elf assistance, and directs Richter to win dwarf support in the Serrated Mountains. Elora and the quickening still require protection, the village's magic forge still needs suitable metal, Modara remains free under Richter's vengeance oath, and the inherited threats involving Xuetrix, Ronan, Count Stonuk, and the remaining captives are unresolved. Randolphus then reports unidentified prisoners in the village.
