In short (whole book)

A top-ranked player of a virtual-reality game touches a ritual pedestal and is transported, body and soul, into the real world the game imitated, part of an exiled prince's scheme to destroy that world and escape his prison. Renamed Richter and marked a Chaos Seed, he starts over at level one. He allies with the wood sprites and their Hearth Mother, Hisako, gains the loyal sprite companion Sion, and defeats a goblin host and its necromancer, which wins him the Mist Village, a ruined settlement built on a place of power. Seeking colonists, he travels to the discriminatory kingdom of Eve, joins an innkeeper named Terrod in fighting a slaver gang, and rescues Terrod's beloved Isabella from a noble, at the cost of a friend's life and leaving the gang's leader, Ronan, alive and hostile. Richter resettles nearly three hundred human and non-human colonists at the Mist Village, allies it with the sprites, and, as the book ends, accepts a quest to drive a new goblin and bugbear incursion out of the forest.

Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)

In the near future, an exiled prince of the Dark Court schemes to escape the Land, a sealed pocket-dimension prison, by destroying it from within. His method: lure Earth's people, who each carry an innate spark of chaos, through a wildly popular virtual-reality game whose unread fine print counts as consent. A top-ranked player of that game breaks into a hidden castle, touches a ritual pedestal, and agrees to go first and prepare the way for others. He wakes for real in a forest, his old levels gone. A small imp explains that the transport is genuine and that pain and death now carry weight; the man ends his old identity and takes the name Richter. Marked as a Chaos Seed, he hunts and levels until he meets the wood sprites of Nadria and their Hearth Mother, Hisako, who sets him to killing diseased wolves troubling the forest. On the hunt his sprite escort, Sion, abandons him, and Richter is mauled to death, only to revive at a hidden glade, stripped of his gear. He confronts Sion; Hisako rules that the sprites failed their bargain, compensates him with enchanted armor, and warns that repeated deaths risk erasing his memory and self over time. Richter chooses to finish the work, and Sion, chastened, becomes his companion.

Story so far - through chapter 15 (this book)

Tracking the wolves' sickness, Richter and Sion find its true source is not a natural plague but goblins: a war-host has been forced together under a chieftain called Big Red, aided by a spellcaster. The pair whittle the horde down, poisoning its cooking pot and then fighting through the survivors, and corner the leaders in a ruined hall, where Richter kills Big Red and destroys the spellcaster, revealed to be a hobgoblin necromancer wielding a staff of decay. Clearing the ruin makes Richter, unexpectedly, master of the Mist Village, a settlement built atop a convergence of ley lines. Its guiding remnant, whom he names Futen, teaches him the rules of ownership; Richter binds the village's Heart Crystal to himself, gaining a wrist mark and a claim on its magic. Returning to Hisako, he learns she too is a master of a place of power. She has the necromancer's staff destroyed, and it proves to have imprisoned a royal pixie chrysalis, a corruption of something good rather than a simple evil weapon. Pixies, believed extinct, are the sprites' natural allies, and the discovery raises Richter's standing with them to trusted. Newly geared and briefed on the human kingdom of Eve, he prepares to travel there to recruit settlers for his village.

Story so far - through chapter 19 (this book)

Settling into the Mist Village, Richter maps its underground halls with Futen's help and takes up a quest to clear a nearby dungeon in exchange for unlocking one of the ley lines' powers. He raises the village's confusing mist and sets out. The dungeon, a cave held by escalating ranks of skeletons, proves far tougher than the goblins: bladed guardians, warded stairways, and a final chamber sealed shut around them, holding two skeleton warriors, a paralyzing ghoul, and a robed skeletal spellcaster. Richter charms the ghoul into fighting for him, and he and Sion overwhelm the mage's shield and destroy it, clearing the place. As his reward, Richter chooses Mastery of Air, gaining an air-magic affinity, a faster-learning ability, and new spells; he also gains control of the dungeon's dark altar, a small font of daily mana. Able now to teach magic as a place-of-power master, he passes air magic to Sion, who had spent his whole life unable to awaken any of his own people's magic, a moment that moves the sprite deeply and upgrades their bond to ally, sworn to fight for Richter to the death. Reaching level 8, Richter turns his attention back toward the journey to the kingdom of Eve.

Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)

On the road, Sion recovers a rare Seed Corps, a magical seed that grows into a tree suited to wherever it is planted, and Richter keeps it to plant later. Reaching the kingdom of Eve, the pair find that its king has spent a decade stripping non-humans of their rights. At the town of Leafs Crossing they gain allies in the guard Caulder and the innkeeper Rosy, who sends them on to the capital, Law, and a contact named Terrod. Terrod secretly leads a network smuggling mistreated non-humans out of the kingdom, but a gang called the Night Blades has begun extorting his people and holding some for ransom. To earn Terrod's full help recruiting colonists, Richter joins a raid on the gang's hideout. The attack frees roughly thirty captives and burns the den, but costs many of Terrod's fighters, and a coded ledger and captives' testimony reveal a worse problem: a woman named Isabella, dear to Terrod, was separated and sold into slavery on a noble's estate. Along the way Richter has armed himself heavily, with enchanted arrowheads, protective rings, a bag of holding, and a bound map that opens a distant, far-too-difficult quest for later, and has reached level 9. Decoding the ledger to find Isabella becomes the group's next task.

Story so far - through chapter 28 (this book)

Through the labor agent Mama and five community leaders, Richter recruits close to three hundred human and non-human colonists for the Mist Village, promising fair, equal wages and passage by river rather than an overland trek. He hires a former royal chamberlain, Randolphus, to run the settlement. The decoded ledger reveals Isabella is held by Count Stonuk, a noble backing the kingdom's anti-non-human laws, who will soon leave the capital, forcing a fast rescue. Three seasoned volunteers train Richter for the job; one, the dark sorceress Quasia, uncovers his hidden status as a master of a place of power, which he reveals openly for the first time. Disguised as servants, Richter and Terrod slip into Stonuk's ball, put the guards to sleep with dark magic, and free Isabella. But on the way to the ships they are ambushed by Ronan, the Night Blades' leader, who survived the raid and has learned their names. In the fight Terrod's friend Jeremy is killed and Sion is wounded before Ronan and his mage escape by magic. The group flees Law by ship with the freed colonists. Reaching level 10, Richter takes Terrod, who can no longer safely stay in Law, as his second companion.

Story so far - through chapter 29 (this book)

The convoy reaches the Mist Village, and the roughly two hundred and ninety colonists begin building it into a real community: a great longhouse rises within a week, farms and mines open around it, and Randolphus organizes daily life while Futen tends the grounds. Jeremy is honored with a funeral pyre. With the settlement stable, Richter and Sion visit Hisako to repair their sprite-made armor and formally ally the Mist Village with the wood sprites. Hisako brings word of a new danger: goblin and bugbear war-bands are pushing into the forest of Nadria from the direction of the Firetip Mountains, killing wildlife and fouling the land, raising fears the forest could become as corrupted as the lost Whisperwoods. Richter and Sion accept a quest to find and clear the invaders' camp, and the book ends there, deliberately pointing forward. Much is left unresolved: the surviving Night Blades leader Ronan and Count Stonuk, both wronged and both alive; the other captives the gang sold, still unfound; the unplanted Seed Corps and an unidentified magical book; the favor Richter owes the imp who first met him; Sion's hinted-at royal past; and, unknown to Richter, the exiled prince whose scheme first drew him into the Land.

How does it end? (ending)

The book closes with the Mist Village transformed from an empty ruin into a working settlement of about two hundred and ninety colonists, its first great building raised and farms, mines, and an administrative structure under way. Richter has grown from level 8 to level 10 across the second half, added dark magic to a broad, multi-school skill set, and revealed his place-of-power status to a small circle of trusted allies. His companions are secure: Sion, recovering from a leg wound, and Terrod, who has abandoned Law for good after losing his home and his friend Jeremy in the rescue of his beloved Isabella, now safe at the village. That rescue's cost lingers: Jeremy is dead, and the Night Blades' leader Ronan escaped alive, wounded, and aware of everyone's identities, an open threat in Law alongside the robbed Count Stonuk. Richter has formally allied the Mist Village with Hisako's wood sprites. The final scene turns to a new danger: goblin and bugbear war-bands encroaching on the forest of Nadria from the Firetip Mountains, which Richter and Sion set out to confront. Left for the next book: the reason for that incursion; retaliation from Ronan or Stonuk; the captives the gang sold who remain unfound; the unplanted Seed Corps and an unidentified magic book; Xuetrix's owed favor; Sion's deflected royal background; and the exiled prince and his conspiracy, still unknown to Richter.
