In the final stretch of her senior year, El has grudgingly acquired friends, a reputation, and a sliver of hope. From the first day the school itself seems to have singled her out, burying her under murderous workloads and steering the most vulnerable students into her path. Still refusing to wield her catastrophic affinity for its intended purpose, she searches for some other use for it and finds herself caring, against every instinct, about getting everyone out of the Scholomance alive.

Still New York's monster-killing hero and now openly El's closest friend, Orion is oddly adrift whenever he isn't fighting for his life. He trails after El, baffled by ordinary human connection and happiest when he can be useful. His compulsive appetite for slaying maleficaria remains a little too intense to be entirely normal, a thread that keeps tugging at El's attention as the year runs down toward graduation.

El's steadfast ally, the artificer whose practical cleverness keeps the group supplied and their plans workable. Loyal and clear-eyed, she is one of the very few people El trusts completely, and a central member of the alliance quietly forming to survive the class's escape from the school.

El's friend from the year before, a gifted musician who has firmly turned away from dark magic and toward the light. Her mice familiars and her steady calm make her a quiet backbone of the group as the seniors' plans grow more ambitious and the school grows more dangerous.

The New York enclaver who became an unlikely friend to El, helping bridge the gulf between enclave privilege and the independent students. Generous with the considerable resources her enclave commands, she helps make El's increasingly audacious plans possible.

A ferociously organized and ambitious German enclaver near the top of the class, determined to engineer the most efficient possible graduation. Blunt to the point of rudeness and impatient with sentiment, she nonetheless has a genius for planning that makes her an indispensable, if abrasive, partner once El sets out to attempt something no senior class has ever tried.
