New York's celebrated Orion Lake kept saving her life until, to her own surprise, the two became friends, and she built her first real alliance, chiefly with the artificer Aadhya and the musician Liu. Over the year she learned how the wealthy enclaves hoard mana and safety at everyone else's expense, resisted every temptation to fuel her magic with malia, and came into possession of the Golden Stone sutras, a spell said to build an enclave without its usual hidden cost. She did what almost no living wizard can claim, destroying a maw-mouth alone, and helped repair the graduation hall's failing defenses, remaking her reputation from feared outcast to someone formidable. The year ended with an unexplained warning from her mother, Gwen: keep away from Orion Lake.

El's senior year opens with the school itself seeming to single her out. Her class schedule turns punishing, routing her through lethal workloads and, strangely, steering the most vulnerable younger students, the ones with no allies and no protection, directly into her path, as if the Scholomance were assigning her to keep them alive. El's growing power, her reluctant leadership, and her deepening relationship with Orion all pull her further from the guarded loner she used to be, even as the stakes of failure keep rising.

El's impossible ambition, sending the entire senior class safely through graduation, hardens into a concrete plan that binds independents and enclavers into one fragile, unprecedented alliance. Liesel's organization, Aadhya's craft, Chloe's New York backing, and El's raw power are marshaled together, and the class begins drilling for a coordinated run through the graduation hall rather than the usual every-team-for-itself slaughter. The maleficaria are massing in numbers no one has seen before, and the strain of holding so many rival factions together tests every relationship, including El's deepening, complicated bond with Orion, whose compulsion to consume mals grows more troubling the closer graduation comes. Long-held assumptions, about enclave superiority, about who is worth rescuing, about what El's destructive gift is for, are challenged as the plan takes shape. El pushes herself and everyone around her toward a single coordinated effort, aware that any crack in the alliance could get all of them killed, and that the school's escalating danger suggests the coming graduation will be like no other.

The seniors carry out their audacious plan, and against every expectation it works: El's power and the class-wide alliance drive back the swarming maleficaria and move nearly the whole senior class toward the exit together, something the Scholomance has never seen. But the triumph turns to catastrophe at the graduation hall, where Patience, one of two ancient, monstrous maw-mouths that haunt the school, stands between the students and freedom. In the chaos of the escape, El is forced out through the gates by her allies while Orion refuses to follow, staying behind to hold the horror off so the others can get clear. The doors seal with him still inside. El lands back in the ordinary world, graduated and alive alongside the classmates she fought to save, but the victory is hollow: Orion is trapped in the school with Patience, and her mother's warning to keep away from him now reads as something she failed to heed rather than something she was spared. Shattered but refusing to accept his loss, El ends the book vowing to find a way back to him, whatever it costs, and the true nature of what Orion is and what the enclaves are built on remains an unanswered dread.

The book ends on a victory turned to grief. El's plan achieves the impossible: nearly the entire senior class survives graduation and reaches the outside world together, a feat the Scholomance has never permitted, and the alliance of independents and enclavers she built holds when it matters most. Aadhya, Liu, Liesel, Chloe, and the others get out. But the cost is Orion Lake. When the maw-mouth Patience blocks the final escape, Orion stays behind to hold it off, and El is dragged out through the graduation gates against her will; the doors seal with him still inside the school, alone with the horror. El arrives home in the Welsh commune alive and graduated but broken, her mother's old warning to keep away from Orion now bitterly fulfilled. Several threads are left wide open: whether Orion can possibly be alive or recovered; the unexplained strangeness of his hunger for mals and what it means about him; the unnatural surge of maleficaria that plagued the school; and El's own unfulfilled potential and the enclave-building spell she still carries. She closes the book not resigned but resolved, determined to get back to Orion whatever it takes, with no idea yet of the far larger truths that search will force her to uncover.
