The fifth entry in The Wandering Inn series follows Floss, a warrior king who wakes after twenty years to find his kingdom fragmented and diminished. Guided by two skeptical aides from Earth, Trey and Therese, who refuse to treat him as beyond question, Floss moves through his rebuilding realm in disguise to judge whether his people can survive another war, then begins reclaiming lost territory and vassals village by village, drawing early armed opposition from a former vassal who has sworn against his return. Elsewhere, the innkeeper Erin sells experimental magical foods while awaiting a friend's return, and the Antinium Xrn and Klbkch weigh how to restore their people's ability to create new queens.
