In short (whole book)

Flos restores his kingdom and defeats a six-state coalition, but his use of captive sales divides him from Trey. Around Liscor, Erin expands the Wandering Inn, Pawn leads individual Antinium through heavy losses, Xrn advances plans to restore the Antinium's future, and the Horns recommit to one another. The Goblin Lord annihilates two armies with the Necromancer's aid while remaining hostile to his master. Laken turns River Farm into a recognized empire after a costly goblin victory. In Baleros, Geneva, Okasha, Ken, Aiko, and Luan survive the destruction of a neutral medical camp and found the United Nations. Undead impostors infiltrate Liscor and target Ryoka, killing the young Gnoll knight and two adventurers. Ivolethe sacrifices her body to save Ryoka, who dies from the Necromancer's spell, but Teriarch revives her, places her under his protection, and forces the Necromancer to promise not to harm her or her associates. Ryoka leaves Liscor as the Goblin Lord's army reaches its approaches.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Erin, an Earth-born innkeeper near Liscor, made the Wandering Inn a refuge for adventurers, Gnolls, Drakes, Antinium, and goblins. Her friendships helped individual Antinium such as Pawn and Bird develop lives beyond the Hive. Ryoka, another woman from Earth, remained classless while working as a runner and became the companion of the Frost Faerie Ivolethe. Her dangerous deliveries connected her to the ancient mage Teriarch, Magnolia Reinhart, and enemies linked to a powerful Necromancer. The Horns of Hammerad rebuilt as a team around Ceria, Pisces, Yvlon, and Ksmvr. Lyonette worked beside Erin and cared for an orphaned white-furred Gnoll child. Elsewhere, the blind Earth-born Laken claimed authority as an Emperor at River Farm with Durene beside him. The King of Destruction, Flos, awakened after twenty years when the Earth-born twins Trey and Therese reached his ruined realm. Across Izril, the Goblin Lord's growing army and the dangerous dungeon near Liscor remained major threats.

Story so far - through chapter 5 (this book)

Flos awakens to a diminished kingdom and the memory of companions lost during his twenty-year absence. Trey and Therese reject his assumption that they owe him obedience, and he asks them to remain as honest critics. Disguised among ordinary workers, Flos learns that his people still idealize him even though their lack of young adults makes renewed war perilous. He decides their faith obliges him to rule actively. A former village raises his banner, bringing him into conflict with Veneth, a former vassal bound by an oath to oppose his return. Flos defeats Veneth without killing him and regains the village and some retainers, though their reconciliation remains incomplete. He then wins a hungry city without assault by marching his followers around its walls until its people open the gates. The new population strains his supplies, and six neighboring states declare war. Flos organizes evacuations and defense while Orthenon leads a smaller force to delay the approaching coalition. Ghazi handles reconnaissance and assassination threats, Mars remains to protect the capital, and Trey and Therese confront the human cost of the war now beginning.

Story so far - through chapter 10 (this book)

The coalition uses threatened refugees to draw Flos into an ambush. Veneth ultimately aids him rather than tolerate the planned atrocity. Orthenon strikes the enemy command structure and draws the larger force toward the capital, where Ghazi activates an old citywide lightning trap. Mars saves Flos in the field and reveals that her glamorous public appearance is sustained by an illusion. Flos breaks the coalition army, then plans to sell captives for food and supplies. Trey rejects this choice, while Ghazi privately explains that Flos bought and freed her from slavery as a child and that she also opposes the institution. Flos nevertheless begins his wider war. In Liscor, Xrn accepts the value of Klbkch's individual Antinium and reveals that their species can no longer create queens. The two consider a future expedition to recover that ability. Meanwhile Toren survives the severing of Erin's mana link by entering the dungeon, learning to reassemble his bones and conceal his nature. Disguised as a mute masked swordswoman, he aids adventurers and returns alone into the mana-rich depths. Ryoka reaches Liscor, settles her debt to the Gnolls with Teriarch's instructional tome, and reunites with Erin, although a Wall Lord continues demanding answers about his missing lieutenant.

Story so far - through chapter 17 (this book)

Ryoka and Erin repair their friendship and compare the dangers encountered during their separation. Ryoka warns that Toren's death is unconfirmed. They plan to test the inn's magical door, expand the business, and advance Ryoka's training. The door proves capable of long-range travel but requires a lengthy recharge at maximum range. Erin hires Bird as a future watchtower guard and begins recruiting more staff. Beneath Liscor, Pawn leads a hundred painted Antinium soldiers against dungeon monsters. Twenty-five die protecting him before Xrn reverses the rout. Pawn and the survivors preserve each fallen soldier's symbol on a memorial wall. At the inn, two newly hired human barmaids neglect work and discriminate against non-human guests. Erin places Lyonette in charge, Ryoka exposes the misconduct, and Erin dismisses the pair. Lyonette then confronts Erin over earlier failures of trust, and Ryoka confirms Lyonette's concealed identity as a princess. Pawn gains Mass Prayer and returns to the underground battle line as the spiritual leader of his soldiers. Farther away, the Goblin Lord ambushes two combined armies. The Necromancer acts through him, kills the Gnoll general, raises the battlefield dead, and helps destroy the force. The Pallas general dies while destroying the reanimated Gnoll general. A captured Drake officer learns that the Goblin Lord is the Necromancer's apprentice but considers his master an enemy.

Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)

In Baleros, Ken, Aiko, and Luan are among Earth arrivals recruited by Qualet into Grave Tender's Fist, a company that clears corpses and undead from mercenary battlefields. They lack combat experience, but Luan's athletic conditioning and Ken's diplomacy help the three survive and work together. They meet Geneva Scala, an Earth-born doctor who treats casualties from both armies with surgery and limited healing potion. Okasha, a Selfid sharing Geneva's living body, controls her right arm and assists when exhaustion overwhelms her. Geneva saves Luan from an enchanted arrow wound. After other Earth arrivals are executed for desertion, Ken, Aiko, and Luan leave Qualet's company for Geneva's medical camp. Geneva's successful treatment of senior fighters makes her strategically valuable, eroding the protection offered by neutrality. Ken and Luan become medics, while Aiko trains as Geneva's surgical assistant. Both warring companies pressure the camp, and a fire mage destroys it. Assassins kill patients and leave Geneva with apparently fatal wounds.

Story so far - through chapter 27 (this book)

Geneva survives, and her companions conceal Okasha's presence. The destruction of the camp triggers open war around the trapped neutral groups. Ken uses an amplifying ring to announce their withdrawal, and soldiers whom Geneva saved protect their passage across the battlefield. At a coastal settlement, Geneva, Ken, Aiko, Luan, and allied survivors found an inclusive organization called the United Nations, though it still needs money, structure, and leadership. Back near Liscor, Erin prepares the Wandering Inn against a danger she senses approaching, equips Bird, and commissions an expansion. The dungeon attracts reckless adventurers after enchanted treasure is recovered. Griffin Hunt and the Halfseekers contain monsters emerging from the rift, and the Halfseekers reveal that Garen Redfang was once their teammate before he killed four companions and stole an unknown discovery. Laken returns to River Farm with supplies and hires. He appoints Prost as steward and plans a larger, organized settlement. Refugees from Windrest join on the condition that they accept Laken's rule, while goblin attacks draw closer. Laken broadens his claimed territory through marked boundaries, begins militia training, and develops limited authority over nearby animals. A poisoned adventurer and an enemy signal confirm that River Farm is under immediate threat.

Story so far - through chapter 32 (this book)

River Farm suffers infiltration, fires, and sabotage while goblins probe its defenses. Laken discovers that an apparent adventuring leader is Magnolia Reinhart's spy, although the reason for the surveillance remains unknown. By extending his territory with marked posts, he locates the approaching goblin force and directs the defense. During the battle he compels wounded and dying subjects to rise and fight. River Farm wins, but thirty-one people die and most of those driven back to their feet perish afterward. Laken appoints the surviving witch as his general, reaches level fifteen as an Emperor, and receives messages recognizing his new political status. In Liscor, Erin abandons an attempt to harvest a healing slime after recognizing its fear. The Free Antinium Queen resumes forbidden work intended to restore queen-making. News arrives that the Goblin Lord destroyed both suppression armies, making Liscor's danger immediate. Niers learns through Olesm's chess newsletter that his unknown opponent is in Liscor and abandons thoughts of retirement. Magnolia claims her family's war resources and prepares a large army. Liscor considers Erin's magical door strategically important, while the Goblin Lord's Necromancer master orders him north to gather more goblins and seek kingship.

Story so far - through chapter 35 (this book)

Lyonette gains Royal Tax, and the young Gnoll she knighted receives the Knight class. The Horns remain Silver-rank but defeat a nest of crellers and recommit to the team after sharing their levels and concerns. Regrika Blackpaw and her Drake mage companion then expose themselves to Ryoka as undead servants of the Necromancer. Their master places a death-word on Ryoka that will kill her if she names him or discusses necromancy. After losing at chess to Erin, he orders the servants to observe the inn and leave Ryoka's associates unharmed. The undead woman disobeys and murders the young Gnoll knight, staging the body among dungeon victims. Erin detects Regrika's lies through her unnatural reactions and lack of Gnoll knowledge. The inn becomes a trap for the impostors, but the skeletal mage removes Zel and the Wall Lord while the undead woman attacks the assembled adventurers.

Story so far - through chapter 38 (this book)

The undead woman overwhelms the inn's defenders, killing two Gold-rank adventurers before pursuing Ryoka. The skeletal mage attacks Zel and the Wall Lord elsewhere in Liscor and escapes after Xrn helps drive him off. Ivolethe deceives the pursuer long enough for Ryoka to reach the High Passes, then breaks a faerie rule to freeze the undead woman. Ivolethe's body shatters. Ryoka reaches Teriarch and names the Necromancer, triggering the death-word and destroying her heart. Teriarch reveals himself as a dragon and revives her. He destroys the undead woman's body with dragonfire and forces the Necromancer to promise not to harm Ryoka or her associates. Teriarch will not begin a broader war, but believes Ivolethe's spirit survived and was banished by the Fae king. Ryoka returns to Liscor for the funerals and identifies the attackers to Erin, the slain Gnoll's aunt, and Zel. Erin's expanded inn gains reinforced structure magic, while the surviving skeletal mage remains under the Necromancer's command. As the Goblin Lord's drums sound near Liscor, Ryoka leaves because she believes her presence endangers her friends.

How does it end? (ending)

Teriarch revives Ryoka after the Necromancer's death-word destroys her heart. He destroys the undead woman servant's body and compels the Necromancer to spare Ryoka and her associates, but refuses to begin a wider war. He believes Ivolethe's spirit survived the destruction of her body and was banished by the Fae king. Ryoka returns for the funerals, identifies the attackers, and then leaves Liscor because she believes staying will endanger her friends. Erin's expanded inn survives the assault, gains reinforced structure magic, and becomes part of Liscor's preparations as the Goblin Lord arrives nearby. The surviving skeletal mage remains in the Necromancer's service. Elsewhere, Flos's war continues after his first victory, River Farm endures as Laken's costly young empire, Geneva's survivors establish the United Nations, and the Antinium pursue restored queen-making and wider recognition. Magnolia Reinhart and other powers are mobilizing, but Liscor faces the immediate approach of the Goblin Lord without a settled resolution.
