In short (whole book)

Life in reclaimed Mithral Hall is disrupted when Drizzt's sister Vierna leads a drow expedition to seize him for sacrifice, aided by Jarlaxle's mercenaries and the assassin Artemis Entreri. The attack catches the companions amid a personal crisis: Wulfgar's jealousy has poisoned his engagement to Catti-brie. Regis is taken, Drizzt and Catti-brie pursue the raiders through the tunnels, and Entreri renews his effort to prove himself against Drizzt. When a yochlol threatens the companions, Wulfgar holds the creature and the collapsing chamber long enough for the others to escape; Aegis-fang is recovered, but he is buried and believed dead. The survivors return to help defend Mithral Hall. Vierna is killed, Jarlaxle abandons the failed assault, and Entreri falls during his final clash with Drizzt without leaving certain evidence of his death. Bruenor retains the hall, but the company is shattered by Wulfgar's apparent death and Drizzt is left fearing that his own past will keep endangering everyone he loves.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Drizzt Do'Urden rejected the violent society of Menzoberranzan, survived exile in the Underdark and eventually found a home on the surface with Bruenor Battlehammer and his adopted daughter Catti-brie. In Icewind Dale he befriended the halfling Regis and helped train the young barbarian Wulfgar, for whom Bruenor forged the warhammer Aegis-fang. The companions defeated Akar Kessell and the Crystal Shard, then searched for Bruenor's ancestral home, Mithral Hall. Their journeys brought them into conflict with the Calimport assassin Artemis Entreri, who became fixated on proving himself against Drizzt. After rescuing Regis from Entreri and Pasha Pook, the friends returned north. Clan Battlehammer has since reclaimed Mithral Hall. Wulfgar and Catti-brie are betrothed, Bruenor rules his restored kingdom, and Drizzt has the stable home he spent years seeking, though both Entreri and the drow city he fled remain unresolved dangers.

Story so far - through chapter 5 (this book)

Mithral Hall is flourishing under Bruenor, and preparations for Wulfgar and Catti-brie's wedding should make the season celebratory. Instead, Wulfgar grows suspicious of Catti-brie's friendship with Drizzt and tries to control choices he once would have trusted her to make. Catti-brie refuses to accept that treatment, while Drizzt worries that his presence is worsening the dispute. Outside the companions' knowledge, Vierna Do'Urden has come from Menzoberranzan with Jarlaxle and a drow force to capture her brother for the Spider Queen. Their agents study the hall and exploit its underground approaches. Artemis Entreri has also returned to the game, bringing his old obsession with Drizzt into a campaign whose larger purpose belongs to the drow.

Story so far - through chapter 10 (this book)

The drow operation moves from observation to abduction and attack. Regis is used as leverage, and Drizzt is drawn into the deep ways where his enemies can separate him from the strength of Mithral Hall. Catti-brie refuses to remain behind and follows with Taulmaril, while Guenhwyvar helps the companions track and survive in the tunnels. Entreri repeatedly turns the pursuit into a private contest, caring less about Vierna's religious purpose than about forcing Drizzt to face him. Back in the hall, Bruenor and his soldiers recognize that the scattered incidents are part of a coordinated assault and begin preparing their defenses. Wulfgar, ashamed of his conduct toward Catti-brie but unable to undo it, joins the effort to reach the threatened companions.

Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)

Drizzt learns that Vierna is directing the hunt and that his intended sacrifice is the purpose behind the raid. Her certainty that his death will restore divine favor leaves no room for reconciliation. The underground pursuit becomes a succession of ambushes involving drow soldiers, Jarlaxle's mercenaries and Entreri, with each faction willing to use the others while keeping separate aims. Drizzt and Catti-brie fight to recover Regis and find a route home. Wulfgar follows into the danger, no longer treating the mission as a chance to assert ownership over Catti-brie but as an obligation to the people he has hurt. In Mithral Hall, Bruenor, Dagnabbit, Cobble and Pwent organize the dwarves against the larger force closing around the kingdom.

Story so far - through chapter 19 (this book)

The separated struggles converge around a yochlol, a demonic servant of the Spider Queen, and the unstable chambers beneath the hall. Wulfgar reaches Drizzt and Catti-brie when the creature and a collapse threaten to trap them. He grapples with the demon and holds the danger back long enough for his friends to get clear, but the chamber comes down over him. The survivors recover Aegis-fang from the wreckage and can find no path to Wulfgar or evidence that he escaped. They must accept that he has apparently died saving them. The loss ends every remaining argument between Wulfgar and Catti-brie without giving either a chance to repair it. Drizzt, Catti-brie and the rescued Regis turn back toward Mithral Hall, where the wider drow attack is still unfolding.

Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)

Grieving but unable to stop, the companions rejoin the battle for Mithral Hall. Bruenor's dwarves exploit their knowledge of the tunnels, Pwent's battleragers meet the attackers at close range, and the drow alliance begins to separate under pressure. Vierna continues to pursue Drizzt even after the raid's strategic purpose is failing; she dies in the final struggle, ending the attempt to offer her brother to Lolth. Jarlaxle chooses preservation over martyrdom and withdraws his surviving mercenaries. Drizzt and Entreri meet again, and the assassin falls away from their last confrontation without leaving proof that he is dead. Mithral Hall remains free, but Wulfgar is gone beneath the collapsed chamber and only Aegis-fang has come back. Bruenor mourns him as a son, Catti-brie is left with an engagement ended by death, and Drizzt blames the dangers attached to his past for the cost paid by his friends.

How does it end? (ending)

Wulfgar is lost beneath the collapse caused during the fight with the yochlol, and the companions recover Aegis-fang but no body. They return to the defense of Mithral Hall carrying grief they have no time to resolve. The drow assault is ultimately broken: Vierna dies, her religious purpose fails, and Jarlaxle withdraws the surviving mercenaries rather than sacrifice them to a lost cause. Drizzt also survives his renewed contest with Artemis Entreri; the assassin falls away during their last encounter and is left behind, though no certain proof of his death remains. Mithral Hall stays in Bruenor's hands, but victory feels like bereavement rather than celebration. Catti-brie's engagement has ended with Wulfgar's apparent death, Bruenor has lost the man he regarded as a son, and Drizzt carries guilt for the chain of events that drew his enemies to the hall. The surviving friends close ranks around one another while accepting that the drow threat has not been permanently ended.
