There he heals a military victim, becomes head drill sergeant, refuses unquestioning obedience, and joins a covert coalition seeking enough power to reform the Nexus.

Previously: Randidly Ghosthound became Karen's founder and Earth's protector while growing into a power capable of attracting dangerous Nexus attention. His strength rests on three principal images - Yggdrasil, the Stillborn Phoenix, and the Grim Chimera - as well as his command of Aether and the forbidden realm of Nether. Nevaeh remains his soulbound partner and an expert in Aether and engraving. Their discoveries in Yestix's legacy suggest that the accepted history of the System and the conflict between Aether and Nether is incomplete. Randidly also carries obligations beyond Earth, including a promise connected to threatened Nemesai worlds and a secret link to Vuala. At the start of this volume, Earth has not yet entered the Nexus under an official name. Karen depends heavily on Randidly, and he expects to leave for the Nexus soon. His former relationships with Sydney and Ace remain damaged, and Drake is incapacitated. A Zurt Brigade presence and the Swak family remain immediate threats.

Randidly tries to manifest Yggdrasil, the Stillborn Phoenix, and the Grim Chimera through one body, but their unequal growth makes the combination unstable. His damaged metal arm is failing just as a Nether assault and the Zurt Brigade converge on Earth. A winged serpent delivers a one-use Nemesai weapon whose true operation remains uncertain, while Nevaeh studies both the weapon and Yestix's living engravings. Randidly conceals most offworld people before Captain Quill's inspection and sends Acri to gather monster bones for a new arm. Sydney continues caring for the incapacitated Drake and refuses Thea's attempt to provoke a fight. Meanwhile, Theodora Grayman orders Richter's group to betray allies during a runic-tablet expedition. Randidly discovers Ace holding Yestix's stolen memories and nurturing a huge fleshly egg. He turns from observation toward direct action against Khan Swak while beginning the dangerous forging of his replacement arm.

Randidly and Nevaeh complete a self-repairing replacement arm from monster bone, rust steel, blood, and living engraving. They then use a brief display of Nether and an isolation barrier to lure the Zurt Brigade special investigator into a trap. The investigator instead seals Randidly inside a suppression space and progressively tunes six pyramids to counter his images. Nevaeh breaches the false space, restoring his Nether and joining the battle, but the investigator uses his fate to overwhelm her with loneliness. Randidly creates an unstable gray pseudo-penance from opposing Nether currents, breaks free, and links his three principal images so they can cover one another's weaknesses. He disrupts the investigator's certainty and kills him with Acri. Elsewhere, Ace prepares to use his blood egg, but Sydney reaches his camp and opposes him. By the end of the battle, the investigator is dead, Randidly is exhausted, his new arm is damaged, and Nevaeh remains mentally destabilized.

Randidly kills Khan Swak and reaches the confrontation between Sydney and Ace too depleted to control it. Sydney rejects Ace's excuses for his violence and kills him, while the enormous blood egg becomes quiet but remains a possible danger. She ends her personal relationship with Randidly and allows only professional contact. Randidly recovers Yestix's stolen memories, though their full contents remain inaccessible, and helps Rose Calloway bury Ace before offering the grieving analyst work. Nevaeh completes more of Yestix's engraving work but decides she will not accompany Randidly to the Nexus. The investigator's attack has traumatized her, and her comparative advantage lies in Earth-based research. At the same time, Theodora Grayman's impeachment proceeds and she turns toward a final gamble with Richter's corrosive experiments.

Inside a time-distorted dungeon, Randidly trains Karen's police and pushes his three-image body toward stable movement and combat. Helen develops her domain while challenging him, the children build under practical instruction, and the Academy gains hundreds of teachers from the Alpha Cosmos. Derek and Heidi prove effective at detecting manipulated entrants to Karen. Both donate memories to Randidly's Dreamcatcher, gaining greater control and places in Karen's elite order. Delilah receives three skills from an unidentified woman, leaving her benefactor unresolved. After six dungeon months, Randidly can normally manage three images at once and returns only hours after leaving. He then enters Yestix's degraded historical memory. It presents an old Aether society, its conflict with Nether, and an Aether historian who used Nether methods to reshape his people. The account alleges that the historian imprisoned the pure-energy son of a woman wearing Lyra's face and a Nether King, using him to create the System. The memory asks Randidly to seek sealed records and a possible means of freeing the captive being, but the account remains unverified.

Twenty thousand duos enter Randidly's tournament. The preliminary environments quickly expose hidden powers and reduce the field, while Randidly uses the event to promote disciplined image development rather than dependence on him. Hank competes with his horse Ancho, Alana fights beside Wyvanya, Lyra enters with her unresponsive partner Stan, and Tykes pairs with Dinesh. Paolo and Kale remain formidable despite a wager forcing them to exchange weapons. Thea's infernal bear refuses to fight, and Randidly tells her it may truly be dead rather than consciously rejecting her. Karen uses the tournament's pause to recruit more specialists, and Randidly concludes the city's collective image has become diverse rather than merely an extension of his own. He also improves his transformed body and continues seeking a controlled, class-like structure for Nether. The bracket reaches its last sixty-four teams, but Randidly judges Earth's strength sufficient only for its earliest calamity.

Randidly traces a subtle influence on Karen to a banker whose image encourages acceptance of fixed human nature. He warns that Karen will resist the harm such acceptance can excuse, but does not treat the banker as an immediate enemy. In the tournament, Zone 7's captain and his adoptive grandfather face Richter and the masked Black Hand. Richter's corrosive manifestation conceals a dark entity in his legs, while Black Hand is revealed as the impeached Theodora Grayman. She sacrifices more of her body to channel Nether, but Randidly prevents the captain's uncontrolled counterattack from killing her. The Zone 7 pair advances, reducing the tournament field to eight duos.

Paolo and Kale defeat Huang Li and Huang Shou after Kale's precise dividing image destroys Huang Li's stronger but less controlled dragon technique. Tykes and Dinesh advance through a coordinated combination, while Alana and Wyvanya, Hank and Ancho, and Lyra's team continue through the bracket. Randidly learns that Vuala has surrendered her former citizenship and now uses the identity Drain. She needs active-cohort citizenship coins to seek political standing, while reports describe a fragmented Nexus facing expanding Nether attacks. After Hank eliminates Lyra, she invites Randidly to dinner. Lyra argues that images may be a human power rather than a gift of the System and announces her own plan to enter the Nexus, gather allies, and protect Earth by a path different from Randidly's pursuit of individual strength. Vuala reports that recent Nether activity was a feint covering the destruction of multiple Nexus citizen planets. On Xperia, Karen resumes its journey and advances its Academy, farming, housing, policing, and elite-order projects. Randidly subjects the Grim Chimera to repeated Dreamcatcher defeats, forcing it to rebuild around the ember of a destroyed world and its drive to survive. Acri is reforged into a smaller, denser form. Tatiana interrupts this punishing training long enough to make Randidly settle essential plans before leaving. When he arrives for a dinner, Alana initiates a coordinated surprise attack. Randidly is exhausted and limits himself to the Grim Chimera as the challenge begins.

The assembled fighters bind, shoot, cut, and transport Randidly through a prepared sequence, eventually moving the battle into open air for a cloud-dragon strike. Their real aim is to measure how far Xperia's best stand below him and what strength the Nexus will demand. Randidly recognizes the challenge as an attempt at equality rather than murder. Though exhausted and restricted to the Grim Chimera, he adapts through each wound, drains mental energy from several opponents, and survives the combined finishing attack. Alana changes her fate after accepting that she cannot follow his path as a fighter. Randidly defeats Paolo, Lyra, and the remaining combatants, and Alana surrenders for the group. He wins the voluntary test, proving that Xperia's strongest coalition remains below even his limited state.

As punishment for the ambush, Randidly takes seventy percent of each attacker's Nether. Their injuries are not permanent, but Xperia's leading fighters will need weeks to recover while the calamity approaches. He then tells Tatiana he is leaving that night and credits her with making him unnecessary to Karen's government. Karen continues toward the final zone under its new institutions. Alana chooses to remain on Xperia and pursue an independent prophetic role, while Wyvanya expands the memorial complex devoted to Randidly. Nevaeh also stays behind, both for engraving work and because Roy's suicide and the Nexus's amassed significance have left her unwilling to go. The overseer guides Randidly through the polluted Aether of the Nexus Undercity and its cable-filled Web. There he meets the original Vuala, a dangerous older near-double whose exact relationship to Vuala remains unknown. Her faction offers him a drill-sergeant position in an emergency program created by spreading Nether taint and war. Randidly is considered for command of privileged recruits, but a divided tribunal initially rejects him. He returns to the deep Web and trains all three images amid stronger Aether, Nether, and time distortion. Political deadlock brings him back when Commandant Wick maims a Swak-family applicant and makes healing the victim his test. Randidly removes Wick's hostile image fragments, rebuilds a serviceable body, and accepts responsibility for the remaining recovery. When Wick asks whether he will obey an order that endangers his charges, Randidly refuses. Wick nevertheless appoints him head drill sergeant, with his new assignment beginning at the fifth cohort station six days later.

Randidly returns briefly to the Web, where the Stillborn Phoenix releases refined emotions and his images continue learning to cooperate. In a deep-Web household, an energy-reading organizer gives him three territory coins as insurance. The coins could remove an entire planet as territory, offering a possible last resort for Xperia or another world tied to his promises. Randidly meets with the organizer, the seventh-cohort overseer, and the military woman who supported his candidacy. Their motives differ, but all reject the Nexus's treatment of lives as expendable resources. Randidly wants people to be free and capable of becoming strong, the overseer wants peace and fewer losses, and the military woman wants to protect those to whom she made promises. They form a covert reform coalition and agree to pursue the sealed body of a former Nexus power as a possible weapon against the entrenched order. Randidly ends the book as head drill sergeant, due to report in six days, while secretly joining a much larger challenge to the Nexus.

Earth is officially named Xperia and faces its first Nexus calamity in 150 days. Karen continues as a mobile city under Tatiana, with its council, Academy plans, elite order, and expansion still developing. Nevaeh remains there to work on engravings and recover from trauma, while Alana and Wyvanya pursue an independent public mission. Xperia's strongest fighters are still recovering from the Nether Randidly took after their test. Randidly and Helen reach the Nexus. After healing a Swak-family applicant whom Commandant Wick maimed, Randidly becomes head drill sergeant and must report in six days, although he has already refused to sacrifice recruits merely to obey an order. Vuala remains entangled in Nexus politics, and the relationship between her and the original Vuala is unresolved. Randidly also joins the seventh-cohort overseer, the military woman, and a deep-Web organizer in a covert reform coalition. He holds three territory coins as a contingency, and the group intends to seek the sealed body of a former Nexus power as leverage against the existing order.
