The thirteenth entry in The Legend of Randidly Ghosthound finds Randidly taking command of an elite recruit training program within the Nexus's military hierarchy, using it to prepare for a longer-term plan against the Nexus's rulers, not just to serve them. He builds an isolated, deliberately punishing compound where two hundred handpicked recruits are stripped of ordinary support and forced to develop their own inner power, called an image, while powerful families try to plant favorites and spies among them to win his loyalty or learn his secrets. As Randidly cultivates the recruits through escalating trials and public displays of his own strength, a war against a hostile invading force grows more urgent, pressuring him to turn the program into a fighting unit before it is ready and forcing decisions about how much of himself to give the system he privately intends to change.
