Helen serves as his veteran lieutenant and trainer, Nevaeh is his soulbound engraving partner, and Vuala is both his offworld partner and a Fifth Cohort combatant. Commandant Wick is his military patron and superior. Randidly's power draws on Aether, Nether, and three principal images, including Yggdrasil, while his ties to Xperia continue across worlds. He enters this volume with allies able to support his military, technical, and personal needs, but those relationships also place obligations on him as the Fifth Cohort faces a growing crisis.

Randidly joins a reform circle planning to use the sealed body of the Nexus creator against the existing order. The plan requires citizenship, military leverage, and engraving research, so he accepts appointment as head drill sergeant for a special Fifth Cohort program. After training in the Nexus web, he claims an unusually large rally-station compound and works with Helen and Nevaeh to build concealed, self-destructing training chambers. Commandant Wick also places Charlotte Wick among the recruits with instructions to cultivate Randidly's loyalty. Two hundred elite recruits enter a suppression field that forces them to move and fight through their images. Randidly divides them by ability, assigns physical labor and cultivation, and refuses attempts by influential families to interfere. A foxlike recruit enters to find his missing brother and aid his Aether-starved homeworld. The first assessments show a wide gap in image control, but Randidly commits to developing all of them while maintaining the fearsome instructor persona that has grown around him.

The foxlike recruit is identified as Raymond. His nine-tailed-fox image reflects his people's theology, but his instructors find that it lacks a desire of his own. The wider Fifth Cohort emergency rapidly worsens: a rogue Nether King has breached the Nexus Ways, worlds have gone silent, and a Commandant has been killed. Randidly reshapes the elite program for likely frontline service. Randidly releases Nether through the compound's suppression formation. It circulates among the recruits, strengthening their images and depositing significance, though Raymond suffers its most intense effects. Benjamin Rex recognizes part of the flow pattern. Randidly also introduces Dark Star challenges as an incentive. In the first demonstration, a recruit and five overseers must survive against him for five minutes. Randidly declines to use his own images, overwhelms Helen and the other defenders, and finishes the fight in four seconds. The display establishes the level of danger the recruits are expected to withstand and convinces them to take the training more seriously.

The recruits' shared Nether experience matures one of Randidly's fate pieces and activates the Visage of Obsession, which promises ten compulsory trials with costs. His Grim Chimera evolves under extreme suppression, badly injuring a leading ram-horned recruit who remains too close to the transformation. As the recruits leave for the funeral, Randidly protects Raymond from an aggressive drill sergeant and publicly asserts sole authority over his unit.

At the Commandant's funeral, Randidly encounters a Rex-family woman whose concealed Nether skill surpasses his own. Elsewhere, conspirators attack a Seventh Cohort overseer and manipulate Aether-harvest accounts to frame him. Randidly and his allies turn the falsified records over to Military High Command. A staged confrontation lets the military expose Nexus Labor Council corruption publicly, though its victory depends on withholding Aether from endangered Fifth Cohort worlds. Randidly rejects a Commandant's attempt to influence his emotions and accelerate his power. Outside deals have compromised several recruits. Randidly destroys a foreign image implanted in one squad leader, then quietly expels the injured host to spare him harsher punishment. Raymond's search for his brother yields only a trail into the Nexus and another disappearance. A ram-demon recruit struggles with a newly strengthened machine-god image, while Raymond still lacks a self-directed purpose. Vuala finally reports from the front that the Nether King's nodes appear to conceal a larger objective. Her brigade has suffered severe losses, and she plans to return briefly to Randidly.

The elite tournaments show rapid improvement, but Raymond and the ram-demon recruit remain divided from their images. Helen assigns them an extended exercise without skills or images. At the next military challenge, an ancient tattooed swordsman ambushes Randidly. His cutting image destroys nearby fighters and overwhelms Randidly's defenses. Randidly saves his people but loses his left arm, suffers damage to his portal key, and watches the training compound collapse before two Commandants force the attacker away. Vuala returns wounded from the Fifth Cohort, tends to Randidly, and confirms their relationship. Their public spar restores some confidence among the recruits and teaches Randidly more about advanced image development. Raymond and the ram-demon trainee are sent offworld to kidnap a crown princess without killing or using supernatural abilities, only to find another abduction already in progress. Randidly and Vuala later descend into the Nexus web to study the forces near an Aether refinery. The swordsman tracks them there, suppresses Randidly's system access, and confronts him in the depths after Randidly sends Vuala away.

The swordsman springs a prepared trap with two accomplices and drives Randidly deep into the hollow Nexus spine. An ally creates a brief opening, but no rescue can reach him. A hostile emotional infection turns severed flesh into an independent imitation of Randidly. Extreme time distortion gives him months to train while little time passes outside. He eventually descends beyond the point where Nether becomes a unified medium, kills the imitation, and studies its carvings for the first practical clue to a Nether class. Randidly concludes that engraving adapts a deeper Nether principle and that his class needs a physical core embodying the personal significance of his three images. Nevaeh reaches the Nexus and sends him a replacement-arm design and materials by an engraved spike. Randidly studies deep Nether beasts, learning how their physical cores store power and create lasting stature, but repeated attempts at his own core fail. He activates the Visage of Obsession for a new perspective. Elsewhere, Raymond and his fellow trainee seize the princess from another kidnapper, and Vuala joins their image-free pursuit exercise when Randidly's disappearance extends the mission.

The Visage of Obsession imposes escalating sacrifices. Randidly loses sound, sight, direction, system contact, external connections, and the ability to rest. Each loss narrows his attention while he continues descending and training. He identifies Yggdrasil with stability and growth rooted in his need for support, then spends about a year developing separate layered Nether engravings around each of his three principal images. His incomplete pattern can resist some of the abyssal pull but cannot yet carry him out. Randidly also forges Nevaeh's design and supplied alloy into a mythic replacement arm able to channel both Aether and Nether. The arm draws hostile emotions and beasts, forcing constant combat. Outside, Vuala and Helen continue Raymond and Diortho's long physical training, while Commandant Wick presses Haefel for Randidly's return before the counteroffensive. Near the bottom of the shaft, an unseen presence disrupts Randidly's tether and consumes his Nether. He begins falling again, prepared to confront whatever created the beast-free voids below.

Porcelain automatons suppress Randidly's images and batter him downward toward a vast prison of Nether gatekeepers and heralds. There he studies their cores and identifies the Grim Chimera's significance as his enduring belief that he can change. The Visage of Obsession then removes his remembered name and demands major internal constructs. His consciousness separates, leaving a Shade beside his inert body to complete the core work. The Shade promises an antlered Nether gatekeeper escape in return for guarding Randidly's body. It fights upward, gathers objects and memories carrying Randidly's significance, and chooses a pillar from Gertrude Collins's Academy labyrinth on Xperia as the core's physical medium. While pursued by a powerful Nether being, the Shade engraves the pillar and uses the attack to conceal Xperia inside a protective field. Randidly awakens, rescues the gatekeeper under a one-year service agreement, and reunites with the Shade. The System identifies the finished runic Nether sphere as the Fang of the Primeval Betrayal. It protects Xperia through Randidly and grants him Weight.

Randidly returns after experiencing roughly five years away, while the Nexus has advanced by ten days. He reunites with Helen, Nevaeh, Vuala, Raymond, and Diortho. His core can lend Weight to connected allies, and the two recruits have become gatekeeper-capable fighters through accelerated training. Randidly rebuilds the rally-station defenses and prepares his elite unit for a final public challenge. Rival factions embed veterans among the opposition, but the two hundred elites defeat successive forces numbering in the thousands through coordination and adaptation. When an attacker attempts to kill a defeated elite, Randidly intervenes. Raymond absorbs part of Randidly's pressure and orders the surviving unit to concede before the confrontation becomes open warfare. Randidly heals both sides and leads his recruits away, while Raymond renews his request for help finding his brother.

A Labor Council monitor admits that a high-clearance tracker was placed in Randidly's Aether and offers the location of his next fate piece as restitution. The piece is held by Randidly's original teacher in the Fifth Cohort. Before Randidly can pursue that lead, Raymond follows a six-tailed fox and finds his missing brother. The brother rejects him, inflicts a mortal wound, and leaves with an unidentified commander after revealing a secret Nexus program that has domesticated Nether Kings for a thousand years. Randidly senses Raymond's collapse, portals to him, and stabilizes his body and soul. At the same time, a Nether King opens a solar-system-scale assault by attempting to fold the moon and the Fifth Cohort together. Commandant Wick blocks the first ritual with his image, but the invasion is underway. Randidly uses Raymond's identification to enter the military muster in his place and rejoins the deployed elite unit covertly. The book ends with Randidly leading the recruits toward an incoming Nether impact zone while warning them that the danger includes forces beyond the visible Nether army.
