In short (whole book)

After an ambush leaves Randidly Ghosthound's skills shattered, Simon Bliss shelters him under the alias David. Randidly recovers, bonds with a bodiless companion that later inhabits a bone worm, and becomes entangled in Zone 32's war between the Wild Rider and Skeleton Knight. He kills the Skeleton Knight, but the Aether-made creature wearing Lyra's face uses the final raid boss to create a sealed dungeon that will drain the zone. Randidly frees the real Lyra from an Aether construct, absorbs its collapse, and returns to strengthen his settlement through training, civic reforms, industry, and public assessments. His attempt to give Stan a custom soul skill exposes serious psychological danger. To enter the dungeon, Randidly creates Planting of the Forest of Enmity, a heretical class shaped by five outside influences. He ends the book with an almost complete ten-person raid party and one East End recruit still needed. Lyra has been found but remains connected to the unresolved creature, both Regalias are inside the dungeon, and Randidly's bonded companion is silent.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Randidly Ghosthound survived Earth's transformation under the System without accepting a class. He developed extraordinary physical and magical abilities, built relationships with the growing human settlements, and trained in spear combat under Shal, an off-world mentor. His choices also created unusual spiritual and Aether connections, including blessings shared with several allies, a living bond with Arbor, and a soul world containing the dangerous Lucretia. Randidly's strength made him a central figure on New Earth, but it also attracted enemies operating through the System's deeper structures. His friendships with Ace, Sydney, Mrs. Hamilton, Annie, Sam, and other survivors remain important even when distance, secrecy, or conflicting priorities divide them. As this volume begins, Randidly is classless, separated from many allies, and facing an adversary capable of attacking the structures behind his skills.

Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)

Randidly escapes an ambush but collapses beside a stream with shattered skill structures and missing equipment. Forty days earlier, fourteen-year-old Simon Bliss survived New Earth's opening, discovered the Golden Lily Spring, and became a healer and medicine supplier. He finds Randidly unconscious and spends weeks treating him. Randidly wakes under the name David, concealing his identity while he assesses the zone and the being using Lyra's face. Simon and David travel to Star Crossing, where Simon chooses the Dreamer class and gains Astral Projection. A Skeleton Knight assault then forces them into the defense. Although activating damaged abilities is agonizing, David destroys much of the undead army and kills its reanimator. Simon's astral scouting becomes essential to their coordination. The eastern leader Sydney responds by planning another attempt to seize them, while Star Crossing's board remains suspicious of David's motives. Randidly gradually frees several skills from the fragments lodged through them, but learns that repeated overuse could create a resonance that destroys every affected structure and kills him.

Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)

The bear-riding pledge leads Simon and David in search of the Wild Rider, but the mission changes when they discover a tier-three raid boss whose illusion-producing spawn are already multiplying. Randidly races ahead and attacks. The creatures hide their true bodies behind convincing false forms, so Simon guides him from astral range toward the concealed cores. Even with that help, Randidly's damaged skills begin resonating under the strain. The Wild Rider explains that ordinary healing cannot stop the collapse. A being already embedded in Randidly's Aether is absorbing the backlash, but it can save him only if he accepts a permanent bond between their lives. Randidly agrees and loses consciousness as the bond begins stabilizing him. The bear-riding pledge reaches the raid boss, follows Simon's astral direction to its true location, and lands the killing blow. The boss dies and Randidly survives, but he remains severely injured while the consequences of the new bond are still unknown.

Story so far - through chapter 29 (this book)

Randidly wakes with cracked but stabilizing skills. His permanent bond grants new Aether abilities and lets his bodiless partner help remove the remaining fragments. The Wild Rider offers a companion ceremony that could provide the partner with a physical host, so Randidly and Simon join nearly thirty pledges caring for a crowded population of animals and monsters. Randidly cultivates special food for them, while Gemma, a young participant with a danger-sensing ability, helps him distribute it. Randidly finishes clearing his skills and completes a path tied to the Spear Phantom tradition. Its trial reveals that the phantom mentor is Shal's father and that Randidly carries the man's heart. Randidly survives the battlefield test. At the ceremony's final selection, animals choose which participants to follow. Simon attracts several and discovers exceptional spiritual power in an ox. Gemma draws a large group, while a metallic dog returns to her. Randidly still must decide which creature, if any, can safely become the body of his bonded partner.

Story so far - through chapter 44 (this book)

Randidly rejects several potential hosts before a bone-worm raid boss offers its body in exchange for protection of its species. He destroys the System structures surrounding its soul and transfers his bodiless companion into the creature, creating a powerful but potentially dangerous reciprocal bond. The newly embodied companion then reveals that David is Randidly Ghosthound. Simon and the Wild Rider's camp react to the deception with hurt and suspicion. After training the companion and experimenting with Aether-based engraving, Randidly travels with Simon, the Wild Rider, and others to a fortified northern refuge. Rose Calloway controls entry through strength tests, but Randidly defeats her bodyguard Brute within seconds. Inside, he learns Shal's world is undergoing a System transition and reunites with Ace, his longtime best friend. Ace is also Dauntless, founder and champion of the refuge. Rose recognizes Randidly as the Ghosthound and cancels an assassination plan prepared against him. Randidly now considers confronting the Skeleton Knight, while the unresolved subject of Sydney continues to strain his renewed friendship with Ace.

Story so far - through chapter 58 (this book)

The Wild Rider admits that she left Gemma with her regalia as part of her own plan, and skeleton forces capture Gemma and her metallic dog. Randidly no longer trusts the champion, but an earlier debt prevents a final break. He defeats Dauntless in a duel without killing his old friend, bargains with Lucretia for help against the creature, and pursues the captives into the Skeleton Knight's territory. Randidly frees Gemma and recovers the regalia, but the creature appears in Lyra's form with the wounded dog. The Skeleton Knight challenges Randidly to single combat. After a prolonged spear duel, Randidly destroys the champion, throwing its army into disorder. The creature then seizes Gemma's headdress and holds the Wild Rider and the last tier-three raid boss in Aether chains. When Randidly refuses its offer of the Wild Rider's role and attacks, the creature uses the boss as a shield. The boss's death creates a sealed raid dungeon. A party of ten must clear it within thirty days or Zone 32 will lose its ambient energy and remain cut off.

Story so far - through chapter 66 (this book)

The raid dungeon admits only one party and rejects Randidly because he has no class. The creature, the two Regalias, and several others are believed to be inside. Randidly, Lucretia, and his bone-worm companion determine that a class is an Aether structure surrounding the soul and consider using the Stone of Genesis to create one outside the System's normal process. Simon confirms that the sealed zone ends at a sharp void, then reconciles with Randidly over the David deception. He remains in Star Crossing after reuniting with his mother. Randidly returns toward his former settlement and enters the immense Aether apparatus suspended above it. There he finds the real Lyra alive inside a convincing artificial castle. System restrictions prevent her from speaking freely, but she reveals that the creature fears the System and that the apparatus can be absorbed after it is damaged. System pressure shatters the construct. Randidly uses Inspiration and Aether manipulation to prevent the fragments from striking the town, absorbing a large amount of hostile, System-like Aether. Lyra disappears during the collapse and cannot be found afterward.

Story so far - through chapter 81 (this book)

Back at his settlement, Randidly finds Arbor greatly enlarged and surrounded by an unintended faith. Weavers from his soul world crossed through Arbor, became stranded, and now produce cloth under Mrs. Hamilton's direction. Randidly begins intensive training with Alana and learns that his blessing connection to Annie has extended in weaker form to her newborn daughter, Delilah. Mrs. Hamilton confirms that the real Lyra has been recovered but will not speak, and demonstrates that Tulumurite burns through Randidly's higher-quality Aether rather than strengthening it. The settlement is growing into a regional industrial center, but currency, land ownership, social division, and relations with neighboring communities remain unsettled. Randidly accepts a more visible leadership role. He trains fighters, studies engraving with Sam, asks Raina for a candid civic assessment, and plans public competitions with rewards for combat, production, System knowledge, and tactics. He also continues studying how classes are built, refusing to treat residents as disposable test subjects. A public performance opens a larger celebration, after which the council is ready to announce institutional reforms and expanded military preparation.

Story so far - through chapter 97 (this book)

The council introduces local currency, land and construction rules, larger squads, and a recurring four-part public assessment. Randidly offers major prizes, including a Stone of Genesis and a promise to change the tactics winner's fate. Hundreds enter. Alana wins the combat tournament, while the production contest rewards both effective craftsmanship and a forging process its creator shares freely. During the knowledge event, Randidly improves several consolidated Yggdrasil abilities and becomes Earth's first holder of a legendary skill. Stan advances through the tactics tournament as Randidly, Lucretia, and the bone-worm companion study class structures. They conclude that a class orders and supports an Aether-based soul body, while excessive breadth can make future growth collapse. Stan wins by concealing a decisive force and manipulating his opponent's formation. Meanwhile, the knowledge winner uses the Stone of Genesis. Its apparatus consumes so much Aether that Randidly must release his reserves, briefly replenishing the starved area beyond the cathedral. The process successfully creates an ancient sight ability, proving that complex skill formation is possible but can demand an immense amount of energy.

Story so far - through chapter 100 (this book)

The Stone recipient uses the only Stone of Fate to transform a combat skill rather than upgrade her class, so Randidly loses his chance to observe class formation directly. He and his partners nevertheless refine their model: a class provides structural order to the Aether body, while a soul skill focuses it through a defining image. As the tactics winner, Stan asks for a soul skill reflecting his nature as a catalyst for the people around him. Randidly shapes that idea into a mirrored instrument above a cage holding a mutable shadow and installs it in Stan. The structure causes no detectable lasting physical damage, but Stan collapses under severe fear. A healer concludes that the terror is a reaction to what the new soul skill revealed about Stan himself. Randidly leaves the skill intact while Stan rests and accepts responsibility for the result. The experiment demonstrates that creating a functioning soul structure can still inflict grave psychological harm even when the recipient's body and Aether appear intact.

Story so far - through chapter 115 (this book)

With the dungeon deadline approaching, Randidly assembles the strongest available fighters and begins creating a class with Lucretia and his bone-worm partner. Their cautious layered design cannot contain the living seed image at its center. Randidly lets the weave collapse into the anchor, fills it with his own accumulated images and Aether, and enters the System's class-creation process. He rejects an initial formulation and chooses Planting of the Forest of Enmity, defining it around growth, support for survivors, and opposition to the System's control. Mrs. Hamilton, Lucretia, a residual spirit, Randidly's patron, and the creature each add compatible influences. Randidly accepts the resulting class only after tempering its hatred with mercy. It grants new plant control, healing, summoning, aura, and destructive skills while limiting his future non-class skill capacity. The System permits the heresy but warns of consequences. Randidly wakes in a crater and returns to the settlement. His bonded companion no longer answers, and a small bird begins forming on his shoulder. Rose Calloway, Alana, Dauntless, and other fighters gather for the dungeon, but the ten-person party remains one member short. Randidly must approach Sidney's militarizing East End to recruit the final participant.

How does it end? (ending)

Randidly completes Planting of the Forest of Enmity and is no longer barred from the sealed raid dungeon for being classless. The class grants powerful plant, healing, summoning, and destructive abilities, but also restricts his future skill capacity and carries five outside influences. He accepts those additions only after moderating the creature's hatred with mercy. The System permits the heresy while warning that subverting its will has consequences. Zone 32 is still losing ambient Aether, and the dungeon must be cleared by a single ten-person party. Rose Calloway takes responsibility for analysis and tactics, while Alana and Dauntless are among the assembled fighters. The group remains one member short, forcing Randidly to approach East End because Sidney and Dauntless parted badly. Sydney's separate connection to Randidly remains unresolved. Simon stays with his reunited mother. Mrs. Hamilton continues guiding the settlement's political and military growth. Stan remains incapacitated by what his new soul skill revealed. Lyra has been found and appears at Randidly's class formation, but her connection to the creature remains unresolved. Both Regalias remain inside the dungeon. Randidly's bone-worm partner stops responding after the class transition, and a small unexplained bird begins forming on his shoulder.
