In short (whole book)
Imprisoned on Telus, Randidly escapes by rebuilding his class as Lord of the Baleful Wood, then helps Helen win her tournament match and raises an army that strips the world of its White forces. A crisis inside his failing soul-world leads him to evacuate its people and create the real, system-recognized Alpha Cosmos. Telus's engineered ascension plan collapses into open conflict. Ophelia and a wind-user die, Randidly loses an arm, and Shal defeats Autorach to carry the world through its second calamity with a hopeful image. Shal enters a Nexus trial. Randidly returns to Earth, where his ascension mark means another person or community must provide Earth's future image. He converts an ogre invasion into a settlement pact, supports Naffer's new order, advances mana engraving, and asks the leading Earth city to define its shared image. Its leaders name strength, and Randidly proposes a squad challenge to test that belief.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Randidly Ghosthound's journey has tied his fate to both Earth and Telus. Shal is his spear master, while Helen is a trusted Telus ally and tournament fighter. Nevaeh can communicate with Randidly through their soul bond, and Lucretia has long served as an adviser within his inhabited inner world. Ophelia is a major figure in Telus's defense, while Silo is among the spear fighters caught up in the world's conflicts. Randidly's powers are built around spear combat, images, ether, plant growth, and the world-tree ideal of Yggdrasil. His responsibilities no longer concern his own advancement alone. He must protect his home on Earth, understand the System's larger dangers, support the people connected to him, and confront the consequences of the living world carried within his soul abilities.
Story so far - through chapter 15 (this book)
Randidly awakens imprisoned on an engraved island that drains his attributes. His level progress has stalled because one pillar of his class is obsolete and distorting the rest. With encouragement from Nevaeh and technical help from Lucretia, he begins redesigning his class while cultivating plants for the light needed to carve an escape array. His isolation also deepens a destructive ash image, so he enters his inhabited inner world to study reconstruction among earth-golem refugees. Elsewhere on Telus, Helen searches for him while continuing the spear tournament, and Shal joins Ophelia against propagators threatening a northern convoy. On Earth, Naffer survives alone through ambush and deception, receives a strange intervention from Nevaeh, and befriends a lonely plant-like being whose touch produces fire. By the end of this span, Randidly has not escaped. He has instead begun searching for a constructive image capable of balancing the ash that threatens both him and his inner world.
Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)
Inside the earth-golem land, Randidly joins relief crews clearing shelters before sandstorm season. He hides the full scale of his power, but his work saves space for thousands and exposes a nest of soulless creatures. The crisis teaches him that rebuilding depends on shared labor, trust, and the willingness to continue after ruin. Outside, his prison crops finally provide fuel, and Lucretia guides the inverse array meant to dismantle the island's suppression. Separate events on Earth show a family seeking a dangerous class alteration, while Lucretia and another soul-linked ally investigate the Council of Fates and its interest in a sealed door. Randidly's presence in the inner world is mistaken for that of the missing Monster Prince, drawing him into a coup and the political consequences of his own creations. He remains focused on escape, but increasingly understands that his class repair and the fate of the inner world cannot be separated.
Story so far - through chapter 34 (this book)
Randidly returns to the physical prison and continues layering inverse engravings onto its restraints despite severe resource pressure. The weakened suppression lets him stand and work, but does not yet free him. Rather than repair his unstable soul skill while hidden from the System's attention, he dismantles the five supporting legs of his class and rebuilds them around new governing images. These include guidance for the people within him, protection of the weak, and a memorial to the former bearer of ash. He destroys the old class image and names its replacement Lord of the Baleful Wood. The reconstruction leaves him unconscious and physically strained inside the prison.
Story so far - through chapter 43 (this book)
After reforging his class, Randidly tests its altered skills and paths while crossing hostile territory. His emerald fire now supports growth as well as destruction, and his connection to the inhabitants of his inner world strengthens his images. He destroys a Witch King, reaches level 36, and gains a skill that recovers resources from nearby deaths. Survivors tell him that an immense White Horde has surrounded the Spearman School. He escorts them through patrols to a refugee camp, where the casual reach of his image power causes ordinary people to regard him as a Pontiff. Randidly finally eats after his long imprisonment and prepares to inspect the increasingly unstable soul-world before entering the larger siege. His equipment remains missing, the tournament's status is unclear, and he still does not know why his captors vanished.
Story so far - through chapter 55 (this book)
Randidly witnesses three linked crises within his inner world: a migration manipulated through grief, a fallen king who has abandoned his purpose, and a dying conspirator who warns that the migrants' escape engine contains a catastrophic flaw. Back on Telus, he reunites with Shal and learns that the Engraving Guild has disappeared. Shal and Randidly demolish its headquarters, finding no workers and further evidence of a White connection. Randidly also meets Ophelia and returns to Helen, whose tournament hopes are tied to freedom from family control. He begins a punishing training program that uses root avatars, rage, and constant pressure to strengthen her blood domain. While the method strains their relationship, it also improves Randidly's control and changes his ether. He completes a path that grants broad stat gains, then rejects its next rewards in favor of pursuing greater will.
Story so far - through chapter 70 (this book)
Randidly accepts a mutated willpower path and continues Helen's training while sending avatars to defend the northern convoy. Shal learns that Telus's missing spear source contains the images and skills of an ascended spearman, and suspects the tournament and war are shaping a new ascension. Helen enters her semifinal against a technically superior opponent. Her blood domain is repeatedly shattered, but she rebuilds it, develops new movement and recovery, and refuses an opportunity to steal her opponent's strength. Even after a severe wound, Randidly's ether connection helps her remain in the fight. Her domain manifests a larger sea creature, exhausts the opponent's enhanced spear, and lets Helen win through endurance and accumulated pressure. With the match decided, Randidly accepts command of an assembled force and turns toward the fallen Death School, where he hopes to recover his equipment and confront the White occupation.
Story so far - through chapter 84 (this book)
False recruiters gather nearly ten thousand applicants in Randidly's name. He converts the deception into four overnight image trials and accepts 6,390 people who can withstand and adapt to his ether. With practical leaders emerging among them, the under-provisioned force travels by magically altered fleet toward the Death School. The Oracle intercepts them with the White army and warns of betrayal, but Randidly continues. Meanwhile, Helen discovers that Silo has become a White-controlled killer and survives her apparent killing blow. At the Death School, Randidly captures a propagator and completes a mountain-spanning formation with his recruits. The formation drains wave after wave of White energy, expands across the region, incapacitates Witch Kings, and captures additional propagators. By dusk, no active Whites remain on Telus. Randidly holds an enormous reserve of stolen energy and openly shifts the conflict toward the spear-user faction behind the world's ascension plans.
Story so far - through chapter 94 (this book)
The sudden collapse of the Whites ends the siege of Hastam, but hidden factions immediately begin moving. Silo survives by killing other incarnations of the spear source and taking their images. Inside Randidly's failing inner world, the Metal Queen reaches the Progenitor runes and tries to sever the connection even if both worlds die. An earth-golem defender is killed protecting a companion, who then kills the Metal Queen. Randidly accepts responsibility for failing to guide her but refuses to use her rage as fuel. Instead, he spends the energy harvested from Telus to evacuate the inner world's inhabitants, supplies, and dead souls in protective vessels. He burns the dependent old world and merges its people with himself. They awaken beside a sapling in the Alpha Cosmos, a real world recognized by the System, with paths and stats of their own. Lucretia remains critically wounded, and Randidly must return to Telus before he can stabilize the new world's unknown dangers.
Story so far - through chapter 104 (this book)
Randidly recovers his equipment, but learns that Telus's leaders engineered a heroic ascension around a duel between Shal and Silo. The sentient spear source created Silo and other homunculi, while generations of manipulation attempted to produce a suitable world image. The plan fails when the white-haired contender impales Silo and absorbs his darkness before Shal can face him. Randidly's former soul skill is confirmed as Figure of the Alpha Cosmos, which grows through its inhabitants' discoveries. Exploration reveals obelisks that clear dangerous mist and grant classes, although many people have vanished. Shal rejects the role imposed upon him and affirms his partner's independent life. Lucretia survives in the Alpha Cosmos. She and Randidly conclude that the original propagator is returning for the heart Autorach pinned to the White City. The propagator recruits the indebted spear user, already burdened with Silo's violent images, to carry competing images for a renewed ascent.
Story so far - through chapter 111 (this book)
Randidly prepares for the final Telus conflict, strengthening himself and protecting his ether connections. He links Rumera to his ether so she will not remain dependent on Autorach, while he and Shal conclude that ascension requires a dominant image and a level-99 bearer rather than the planned duel. At the White City, Randidly opens the portal route while Lucretia delays Shal according to their plan. The original propagator names itself Adete and fights Autorach as the indebted spear user absorbs increasingly destructive images. Lucretia reveals that she is Shal's mother and accepts his determination to represent Telus. The supporting battles turn catastrophic. Ophelia pins Adete but is killed, and a northern spear user kills the allied wind-user. Randidly sends Shal into the central fight, then confronts the surviving northern spearman, who seeks revenge for his grandson. The opponent's sun image overwhelms Randidly's ash and severs Randidly's left arm in their first clash.
Story so far - through chapter 121 (this book)
Badly wounded and trapped beneath molten ground, Randidly anchors Crossroads of the Alpha Cosmos in the dispersing ether pattern of his missing arm. The domain summons inhabitants of the new world. An Alpha Cosmos swordsman, aided by the lingering image of the dead wind-user, kills the sun-image spearman. Randidly reaches the ascension chamber, where the Oracle is being forced into a violence-driven ascent. He erodes the invading image and saves her, while Shal refuses to let Autorach dictate Telus's future. In their duel, Autorach initially holds the vastly larger image of the world's accumulated violence. Randidly gives Shal his living spear, which accepts him and helps gather smaller lights of hope. Shal grounds his image in the dream of a hero who can bring peace, breaks Autorach's violence image, and beheads him. Telus passes its second calamity under Shal's hopeful wraith-adder image. Now the chosen one, Shal enters the Nexus trial promptly and leaves Telus in a one-year grace period.
Story so far - through chapter 130 (this book)
Randidly spends his remaining time on Telus addressing food shortages, refugees, and institutional collapse. He proposes a university that will preserve many spear traditions and sustain Shal's hopeful image, recruits an engraving apprentice, and invites Helen and the recovering Oracle to visit Earth. Back home, he learns that higher powers noticed Telus's renewed progress. His heretic path is moving toward a final judgment within months, and Shal's ascension mark prevents Randidly's own image from serving as Earth's eventual ascension image. An ogre army then advances through a portal, seeking the energy its home world lacks. Randidly brings Helen to the front, overwhelms the ogres' summoned tree, and forces negotiations. The invasion becomes a pact: the ogres receive northern mountain territory for seven generations, ally with the leading Earth settlement, and assume responsibility for controlling their portal. The immediate war ends, although stronger beings from the ogres' world may still cross later.
Story so far - through chapter 137 (this book)
Helen remains on Earth to test herself against local defenders despite the conversion of her denser Telus ether leaving her weaker. In the Alpha Cosmos, explorers locate more obelisks while others disappear in the mist, and Randidly assigns the Monster Prince to study engraving under Lucretia. Randidly briefs Earth's field leaders on calamities, images, and the need to develop an ascension image that is not his own. Simon later warns him that the settlement's concentrated authority may become an oligarchy, but Randidly declines to endorse immediate elections. Following Nevaeh's requests, Randidly checks on Naffer. The teenager has survived a costly guerrilla war against ogres and inducted three very different defenders into Randidly's order. Randidly validates the inductions but finds complex ether runes hiding one member's soul space. Rather than assume guilt, he grants provisional trust, plans to consult Lucretia, and begins personally training Naffer.
Story so far - through chapter 149 (this book)
Randidly tends a garden for Nevaeh, reunites with Sam, and commissions armor with a replacement metal arm. Nevaeh reveals that a completed danger zone opened a secret portal to a populated foreign world, which she is containing by killing the monsters that emerge. Randidly studies mana engraving and discovers how exact three-dimensional patterns can hold skills. His first growing item eventually fails as its skill outgrows the metal, but conventional engravings prove valuable and powerful. Helen repeatedly challenges coordinated Earth squads and continues learning from defeat. The city's leaders prepare for another confrontation with Randidly while reporting strong population, military, and industrial growth alongside market competition and external threats. At their meeting, Randidly asks what the city wants to represent when future calamities test society through images. Its leaders identify a shared belief that their city is strongest. Randidly says that image must be refined, then proposes a renewed challenge against its squads. The book ends with the city accepting that immediate test while Earth still needs a viable future ascension image.
How does it end? (ending)
Shal has become Telus's chosen one and entered the Nexus trial, leaving the world in a one-year grace period while its survivors rebuild. Rumera receives his Ring of Promise. The Oracle survives the interrupted forced ascension, while the final conditions of Adete, the indebted spear user, and Silo are not settled. Randidly returns to Earth without his left arm, carrying the Alpha Cosmos and the transport domain anchored in that loss. His mark from Shal's ascension prevents his own image from serving as Earth's eventual ascension image, and his final heretic judgment is expected within months. Helen remains on Earth to train with its defenders. Nevaeh is containing a secret foreign-world portal, Naffer has founded a mixed defense order, and Lucretia is alive within the Alpha Cosmos and teaching engraving. The ogres receive conditional mountain territory for seven generations and responsibility for guarding their portal. The leading Earth city remains prosperous but faces military, commercial, civic, and image-based pressures. Its leaders identify collective strength as their defining image, and Randidly proposes another challenge against its squads as the immediate test.
