In short (whole book)
Believing Bruenor, Catti-brie and Regis dead at Shallows, Drizzt wages a solitary war against Obould's army and increasingly gives himself over to the remorseless Hunter within him. The three companions actually survived and join Wulfgar and the defenders of Mithral Hall, where Shoudra and Nanfoodle seek a way to stop orcs and frost giants from overwhelming the approaches. Elves Innovindil and Tarathiel find Drizzt and temper his reckless campaign, but Obould's growing status as Gruumsh's chosen gives the orcs unity and their king formidable power. Obould kills Tarathiel, and Drizzt's attempt to defeat him does not end the threat. Nanfoodle's explosives help break a major assault on Mithral Hall, though Bruenor is gravely wounded and Delly is killed, leaving Colson to the surviving companions. Drizzt at last learns that his friends survived Shallows and rejoins them, but the hall remains threatened and Obould's new realm is still taking shape.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Drizzt, Bruenor, Catti-brie, Regis and Wulfgar were reunited after Wulfgar recovered Aegis-fang and chose a new family life with Delly Curtie and the child Colson. Their return north brought them into a planned invasion led by King Obould Many-Arrows, who united orc tribes and gained frost giant support from Gerti Orelsdottr. Hidden drow agents encouraged the coalition while Mirabar's divided leaders delayed a regional response. Bruenor drew shield dwarves, Sceptrana Shoudra Stargleam and the gnome inventor Nanfoodle into the defense. At Shallows, Obould's army and giants destroyed the tower where Bruenor, Catti-brie and Regis had made their stand. Drizzt, cut off outside, saw the collapse and believed all three dead. They actually escaped and remain alive, but enemy lines prevent them from reaching him. The invasion now presses toward Mithral Hall while Drizzt begins a private war based on a devastating mistake.
Story so far - through chapter 5 (this book)
Drizzt moves alone through territory occupied by Obould's forces, convinced that the fall of Shallows killed Bruenor, Catti-brie and Regis. He stops treating his attacks as reconnaissance or defense and begins hunting orcs for vengeance, taking risks he would reject if he still believed anyone depended on his return. The instinctive killing state he calls the Hunter offers clarity but narrows every decision toward the next enemy. Elsewhere, the three friends he mourns are alive. Their escape from the ruined position carries them toward Mithral Hall, where the invasion's real scale is becoming clear. Wulfgar, Delly and Colson remain caught in the same regional crisis, and the companions' first task is survival rather than finding the ranger beyond the army. Obould uses victory at Shallows to strengthen his command, promising followers that conquest can give them permanent homes rather than temporary plunder.
Story so far - through chapter 10 (this book)
Bruenor, Catti-brie and Regis reach the wider defense around Mithral Hall and join Wulfgar in preparing for siege. Banak Brawnanvil organizes the hall's warriors while Shoudra and Nanfoodle study approaches vulnerable to giant attack. Delly tries to keep Colson safe inside a fortress becoming a battlefield. None of them can pass through the host to tell Drizzt they survived. In the wild, Drizzt's increasingly reckless strikes bring him into contact with the elves Innovindil and Tarathiel. They share his enemy but do not share his conviction that death is acceptable as long as enough orcs die first. Obould's shamans and victories encourage claims that Gruumsh has chosen him. Ritual, enchanted equipment and belief reinforce one another, making the king personally harder to challenge and politically harder for rival chiefs to disobey. Gerti's giants remain essential to the campaign even as the orc king's new stature changes the balance within their alliance.
Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)
Mithral Hall's defenders contest gates, tunnels and crossings against forces able to replace losses faster than the dwarves can. Bruenor refuses to yield his clan's home, Banak preserves order under repeated pressure, and Catti-brie's bow makes exposed approaches costly. Regis supports plans that depend on deception and movement rather than a direct contest of numbers. Shoudra and Nanfoodle work toward a larger engineered answer to the giants, whose strength can undo ordinary fortifications. Outside the siege, Innovindil and Tarathiel draw Drizzt back into cooperation. Their scouting gives his attacks purpose beyond immediate revenge, though he still assumes his closest companions are dead. The hidden drow faction continues to push the orc coalition toward destruction while avoiding open control. Obould increasingly acts on his own ambitions, using divine claims without becoming a simple instrument of either the drow or Gerti.
Story so far - through chapter 21 (this book)
Drizzt accepts Innovindil and Tarathiel as partners in a mobile campaign against Obould's patrols and supply lines. Fighting beside them restrains the worst of his isolation, but every success still leads him toward the orc king he holds responsible for Shallows. Innovindil challenges the idea that a long-lived elf can survive grief by refusing future attachments; Drizzt is not ready to apply that lesson to friends he believes newly dead. At Mithral Hall, the attackers tighten pressure and search for a decisive breach. Bruenor's defenders cannot defeat the entire host at the walls, so Shoudra and Nanfoodle prepare to use the shape of the battlefield against concentrated troops and giants. Wulfgar divides his strength between the defense and Delly and Colson, struggling not to answer fear with the destructive habits he once mistook for freedom. Obould's personal authority continues to grow as battlefield success seems to confirm the shamans' promises.
Story so far - through chapter 26 (this book)
The fighting becomes personal on both fronts. Obould catches Tarathiel and kills him, leaving Innovindil with the loss she had urged Drizzt not to let define the rest of his life. Drizzt turns his attention more directly toward the orc king, whose strength and armor make a simple assassination unlikely. At Mithral Hall, the strain of siege reaches the noncombatants as well as the soldiers. Delly is killed amid the violence, and Colson survives in the care of the companions. Wulfgar is left to absorb the death of the woman who helped him become responsible for another life. Nanfoodle's preparations are brought into the active defense, with Shoudra and the dwarves arranging the enemy's movement toward a place where an engineered blast can do what ranks of fighters cannot. Bruenor remains at the center of the stand even as the plan exposes him and his soldiers to the force meant to stop the attackers.
Story so far - through chapter 31 (this book)
Nanfoodle's explosive plan destroys a crucial crossing while it is crowded with enemy forces, killing attackers and breaking the momentum of the giant-supported assault. Mithral Hall holds, but Bruenor is gravely wounded and many defenders die. Delly's death leaves Wulfgar and the surviving companions responsible for Colson. Beyond the hall, Drizzt confronts Obould after Tarathiel's murder. The fight proves that Obould's claim to divine favor rests on more than propaganda: his enchanted defenses and enhanced strength let him survive Drizzt's blades and keep command of the host. Neither kills the other. Drizzt and Innovindil then reach the battered defenders, and Drizzt finally discovers that Bruenor, Catti-brie and Regis survived the tower at Shallows. His private war was built on false knowledge. Reunited with Catti-brie and the others, he steps back from total surrender to the Hunter, but there is no clean restoration. Bruenor lies badly injured, Tarathiel and Delly are dead, Obould remains undefeated and the army still surrounds a Mithral Hall that has merely survived the current assault.
How does it end? (ending)
Mithral Hall survives the assault, but the defense costs lives and leaves Bruenor gravely wounded. Nanfoodle's explosives destroy a vital crossing under the attackers and blunt the advantage supplied by Gerti's giants. Delly is killed during the chaos, leaving Colson in the companions' care and Wulfgar facing another loss that cannot be repaired by battle. In the open country, Obould kills Tarathiel, turning Innovindil's war into a personal grief and drawing Drizzt toward a direct confrontation. Drizzt fights Obould and discovers that the orc king's enchanted armor, strength and religious authority cannot be dismissed as theater, though neither warrior ends the other's campaign. Drizzt finally reaches the defenders and learns that the friends he mourned after Shallows are alive. The reunion ends his false isolation but does not restore the earlier world: Bruenor is badly hurt, Delly and Tarathiel are dead, Mithral Hall remains under pressure, and Obould still commands an army. Drizzt returns to Catti-brie, Regis and the surviving companions with his reason intact, while both sides prepare for the war to continue.
