Dorothy Gale (Protagonist)

Ozma's closest friend and the determined leader of the search. Dorothy refuses to wait helplessly in the Emerald City and sets out across unfamiliar country to find the lost princess.

The Wizard of Oz (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

The court magician of Oz, whose black bag of useful magic has vanished along with Ozma. Even without his usual equipment, the Wizard joins Dorothy and applies his experience to each strange obstacle.

Toto (Supporting)

Dorothy's small black dog and faithful traveling companion. Toto's sharp nose and readiness to investigate make him useful when the search party enters places where appearances are misleading.

Cayke the Cookie Cook (Protagonist)

The Cookie Cook of the Yips, distressed by the theft of her diamond-studded golden dishpan. Cayke values the pan as the special tool behind her famous cooking and leaves home to recover it.

The Frogman (Protagonist)

A large, learned-looking frog who serves as Cayke's adviser among the Yips. The Frogman speaks with great confidence and agrees to guide Cayke into the wider Land of Oz.

Betsy Bobbin (Supporting)

A girl who lives in the Emerald City and joins Dorothy's expedition. Betsy is an experienced traveler in Oz and meets the party's odd discoveries with practical courage.

The Hungry Tiger (Supporting)

A powerful tiger whose enormous appetite never leads him to harm anyone. He accompanies the Cowardly Lion and helps carry and guard the younger members of the party.

The Woozy (Supporting)

A square-bodied creature whose chief weapon is a fearsome growl. The Woozy is an old friend of Dorothy's group and joins the search as a loyal, unusual member of the company.

The Big Lavender Bear (Supporting)

A large lavender-colored bear who collects answers to questions about the world. His little companion supplies the answers, making the pair valuable guides when the two search parties meet.

The Little Pink Bear (Supporting)

A tiny pink bear whose statements are always true. Kept by the Big Lavender Bear, he can settle questions that guessing, magic, and ordinary investigation cannot answer.

Ugu the Shoemaker (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 19

A shoemaker who has secretly studied magic and resents the more celebrated magicians of Oz. The Pink Bear's truthful answers identify Ugu as the thief the searchers have been seeking.
