The Lost Princess of Oz recap

Ozma vanishes from the Emerald City at the same time that magical treasures disappear from Dorothy, the Wizard, and Glinda. Dorothy leads a search party across the Winkie Country, while Cayke the Cookie Cook and the self-important Frogman separately seek Cayke's stolen golden dishpan. After visits to strange communities, a Truth Pond, and the home of two magical bears, the parties unite. The Little Pink Bear's unfailing answers point to Ugu the Shoemaker, a jealous magician who has stolen the missing objects and hidden Ozma through enchantment. The friends overcome Ugu's defenses in his wicker castle, recover the magic, and discover Ozma transformed into a peach pit. She is restored, Ugu departs as a dove, and Dorothy persuades everyone to answer his wrongdoing with forgiveness.

Ozma rules Oz from the Emerald City, where Dorothy, the Wizard, Betsy, Trot, and many friends have found homes. Glinda the Good watches events with powerful magic, while Dorothy's past journeys have filled every region with friends. The story begins with a new danger inside this usually peaceful fairyland.

Dorothy discovers that Ozma has vanished from her rooms in the Emerald City. At the same time, important magical objects are missing: Dorothy cannot find the Magic Picture, the Wizard has lost his black bag, and Glinda's Great Book of Records and other treasures have disappeared. With no easy magical way to locate the princess, Dorothy organizes an expedition with the Wizard, Toto, Betsy, Trot, Button-Bright, the Cowardly Lion, the Hungry Tiger, and the Woozy. Elsewhere, Cayke the Cookie Cook of the Yips finds that her diamond-studded golden dishpan has been stolen. She and the grandly confident Frogman set out on their own search, unaware that their smaller mystery is tied to Ozma's disappearance.

Dorothy's company crosses the Merry-Go-Round Mountains and visits the puzzling city of Thi, where appearances and customs make useful information hard to obtain. Toto and Button-Bright each create fresh worries, and Button-Bright becomes separated from the others once again. The travelers then reach Herku, whose ruler keeps strangers under his control and whose people draw unnatural strength from a special food. Meanwhile, Cayke and the Frogman continue through the Winkie Country. At the Truth Pond, its water strips away false appearances and self-deception, leaving the Frogman less certain of his supposed wisdom. Both parties keep moving toward the same remote country, gathering clues but still lacking a name for the thief or a clear sign of Ozma.

After crossing with an unhappy ferryman, the travelers meet the Big Lavender Bear and the Little Pink Bear. The larger bear has gathered countless questions, while the little bear gives answers that are always true. Cayke and the Frogman arrive as well, and the two expeditions finally unite. By asking the Pink Bear careful questions, they connect the stolen dishpan with Ozma's disappearance and identify Ugu the Shoemaker as the thief. Ugu has secretly taught himself powerful magic and, jealous of the famous magicians of Oz, has taken their most useful treasures for himself. The whole company now has a destination: Ugu's wicker castle. Dorothy prepares to recover Ozma and the stolen objects, while the Wizard must face a magician who possesses much of the magic that would normally help them.

Dorothy's party reaches Ugu's wicker castle and meets defenses built from stolen magic. Ugu refuses to surrender, but the searchers combine courage, truthful answers, and the magic they can recover to overcome him. The Little Pink Bear reveals the final secret: Ozma has been transformed into a peach pit and hidden among ordinary objects. She is found and restored, while the other stolen treasures, including Cayke's golden dishpan, the Wizard's black bag, and Glinda's records, return to their owners. Ugu is changed into a dove. Dorothy asks Ozma to forgive him, and when offered restoration he chooses to remain a bird and flies away. Ozma and her friends return safely to the Emerald City, the Frogman carries home a humbler view of himself, and Cayke has learned that her skill and happiness do not depend entirely on her splendid pan.

Inside Ugu's wicker castle, Dorothy's party recovers the stolen magical treasures and learns that the lost princess has been hidden by transformation rather than carried away as a prisoner. The Little Pink Bear's truthful answers identify the enchanted peach pit that is really Ozma, and she is restored to her proper form. Ugu is reduced to the form of a dove and refuses the chance to become a man again, preferring to fly away. Dorothy asks that he be forgiven rather than punished further. Cayke receives her golden dishpan, Glinda and the Wizard regain their tools, and every traveler returns safely. The adventure also leaves the Frogman humbler and Cayke less dependent on a possession for her sense of worth, while Ozma resumes her place in the Emerald City among her relieved friends.
