An orphan raised at Redmont who trained under Halt and became a full Ranger. By the end of the preceding novels, Will is an experienced scout and archer whose closest relationships include his former mentor, the knight Horace and the Courier Alyss.

Will's former mentor and one of the most respected Rangers in Araluen. Halt left a royal family in Hibernia, helped rebuild the Ranger Corps with Crowley and has spent much of his adult life serving King Duncan from Redmont.

Will's childhood companion and one of Araluen's finest knights. Horace has fought beside the Rangers in Araluen, Skandia, Hibernia and Nihon-Ja, combining exceptional swordsmanship with a direct and dependable nature.

Halt's former apprentice and an experienced Ranger in his own right. Gilan is unusual among Rangers for carrying a sword as well as a bow and has served as a field agent, commander and mentor to younger members of the Corps.

Commandant of the Ranger Corps and Halt's oldest Araluen friend. Crowley helped organise resistance to Morgarath before the first rebellion and later rebuilt the Rangers as the kingdom's intelligence and scouting service.
