The Lost Stories recap

Presented as recovered accounts from Araluen's past, this collection fills gaps before, between and after the preceding novels rather than continuing one book-length plot. Its stories revisit the central circle at different ages: Halt's Hibernian origins and early Ranger service, the truth about Will's parents, missions involving Rangers and Couriers, quieter dangers around Redmont and changes in the friends' personal lives. Familiar figures including Will, Halt, Horace, Alyss, Gilan, Crowley, Cassandra, Pauline and Jenny appear in combinations that the main campaigns did not always have room to show. The later material carries the characters beyond the return from Nihon-Ja and gives Will and Alyss a long-awaited wedding. Taken together, the fragments turn mysteries and passing references from the series into a broader history of the Ranger Corps and the people around it; they do not introduce a single new antagonist or a continuous final campaign.

Collection note: these are separate accounts set at different points in the history of Araluen, and their internal chapter numbering restarts with each story. This sidecar therefore provides only a collection-level entry and does not assign linear chapter gates or identify individual story culprits. Previously in the series, Will grew from a Redmont ward into a full Ranger under Halt; Horace became a leading knight; Alyss became a Courier and Will's partner; and Cassandra served Araluen both as princess and field companion. Their campaigns defeated Morgarath, helped Skandia resist the Temujai, saved Macindaw, exposed the Outsiders in Hibernia and preserved Emperor Shigeru's rule in Nihon-Ja. Halt survived the Genovesan poison used during the pursuit of Tennyson, and Horace returned safely from Ran-Koshi. The stories that follow move backward and forward around that shared history rather than beginning after it in a single timeline.
