The Magic of Oz recap

Kiki Aru secretly learns his father's transformation word and runs away, only to meet Ruggedo, the former Nome King. Ruggedo persuades him to use the charm in a plot against Ozma, beginning with an attempt to raise the beasts of the Forest of Gugu against human beings. At the same time, Dorothy, the Wizard, Trot, Cap'n Bill, and the Glass Cat pursue separate birthday gifts for Ozma. Trot and Cap'n Bill become rooted to the Magic Isle, while the Wizard's party collides with Kiki's enchantments. The Wizard overhears the magic word, the Glass Cat recovers his lost black bag, and the conspirators are defeated. The friends are rescued in time for Ozma's party. Kiki repents and goes home; Ruggedo drinks from the Fountain of Oblivion and forgets his long hatred.

Ozma rules Oz from the Emerald City, aided by Dorothy and the Wizard. Trot and Cap'n Bill have also made their home there, and the Glass Cat is one of their unusual friends. Ruggedo, once the Nome King, has repeatedly plotted against Oz and has lost his throne, but not his resentment.

On Mount Munch, Kiki Aru overhears the secret word his father, Bini Aru, uses to transform one creature into another. Hungry for adventure and importance, Kiki changes himself into a hawk and flies away. He soon meets Ruggedo, the deposed Nome King, who is still looking for a way to harm Ozma. Ruggedo flatters the inexperienced boy and proposes that they use the transformation charm to conquer Oz. Meanwhile, Ozma's friends prepare for her birthday. Dorothy and the Wizard consider a gift of performing monkeys, while Trot and Cap'n Bill decide to seek a marvelous flower said to grow on a magic island. The Glass Cat agrees to guide the latter pair, sending several separate journeys into motion.

Kiki and Ruggedo adopt fantastic animal shapes and enter the Forest of Gugu, where they try to persuade King Gugu and the assembled beasts that all human beings are their enemies. The forest rulers are wary, but Kiki's ability to change bodies gives the threat real force. Elsewhere, the Glass Cat leads Trot and Cap'n Bill to the Magic Isle. The island's beautiful flower is protected by an enchantment: as soon as the two flesh-and-blood visitors step ashore, their feet take root and they cannot leave. The Glass Cat escapes the trap and goes for help. Dorothy, the Wizard, and the Cowardly Lion also reach the forest, bringing Ozma's friends into the path of the disguised conspirators just as Kiki begins using his magic against those who oppose the plan.

Kiki's transformations throw the Forest of Gugu into confusion, and the Wizard loses the black bag that contains his most useful equipment. Yet Kiki speaks the secret word where the Wizard can hear and remember it. The Glass Cat searches successfully for the missing bag, while information from the Lonesome Duck helps the friends deal with the separate enchantment of the Magic Isle. Once reunited with his tools and armed with the transformation word, the Wizard can undo false shapes, expose Ruggedo and Kiki, and prevent the proposed war between animals and people. Trot and Cap'n Bill are released from the roots that held them, and their quest for the magic flower can at last be completed. The several parties turn back toward the Emerald City in time for Ozma's birthday.

With the forest conspiracy defeated and Trot and Cap'n Bill rescued, Ozma's friends finish gathering their birthday surprises. Dorothy's efforts with the monkeys produce further confusion, including a visit to the College of Athletic Arts, but the mishaps are set right and the company reaches the Emerald City. Ozma receives the magic flower and the other gifts at a joyful party. She responds to Kiki and Ruggedo with mercy instead of vengeance. Kiki recognizes how badly Ruggedo used his pride and returns to Mount Munch and his father. Ruggedo will not willingly abandon his hatred, so he is given water from the Fountain of Oblivion. He forgets his old grudges and schemes, leaving him harmless. Ozma's birthday therefore ends with her friends safe, the beasts at peace, and both conspirators denied the revenge they planned.

The Wizard learns the transformation word, recovers his black bag with the Glass Cat's help, and reverses Kiki and Ruggedo's attack on the Forest of Gugu. Trot and Cap'n Bill are freed from the Magic Isle, and the flower they sought becomes part of Ozma's birthday celebration. Dorothy's adventures with the monkeys also end safely, and the friends gather in the Emerald City with their gifts. Ozma offers mercy to the defeated conspirators. Kiki is ashamed of having let Ruggedo guide him and returns to his father, Bini Aru, with a chance to use better judgment. Ruggedo remains defiant until he drinks from the Fountain of Oblivion; its water removes his memories of hatred and revenge, leaving the former Nome King harmless and giving the celebration a peaceful close.
