The Marvelous Land of Oz

By L. Frank Baum

Tip is a boy of the purple Gillikin Country in the north of Oz, brought up by Mombi, an old woman who dabbles in magic she is not supposed to practise. To give her a fright, he carves a grinning pumpkin, fixes it to a jointed wooden body and names the figure Jack Pumpkinhead, but Mombi simply tries a newly acquired Powder of Life on it, and the figure walks and talks. When she then plans to turn Tip into a marble statue for her garden, he slips away in the night with Jack and the powder, heading south for the Emerald City, where the Scarecrow is now king. On the road Tip falls in with General Jinjur, who has gathered an army of girls to march on the city and take its throne and its jewels for themselves. Baum's 1904 return to Oz leaves Dorothy out, though the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman both return.
