Tip (Protagonist)

Also known as Tippetarius

Appears from the start

A boy who lives in the northern Gillikin country of Oz, kept as a servant by the old woman Mombi, who has raised him and set him to hard chores. Bright, mischievous, and tired of Mombi's harshness, he builds a figure with a carved pumpkin head, meaning to give her a fright. When his prank and Mombi's magic set unexpected events in motion, Tip runs away to seek his fortune, becoming the resourceful young hero at the center of the adventure.

Mombi (Antagonist)

Appears from the start

An old woman living in the Gillikin country who dabbles in forbidden magic and keeps the boy Tip in her service. Sharp-tongued and secretive, she guards her spells jealously and is willing to use her powers to control those around her. Her acquisition of a marvelous magic powder sets the story's events in motion.

Jack Pumpkinhead (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A figure Tip cobbles together from wooden limbs and a carved pumpkin for a head, dressed in old clothes, which is brought startlingly to life. Cheerful, earnest, and thoroughly literal-minded, Jack takes every word he hears at face value and frets constantly that his pumpkin head will eventually spoil. He becomes Tip's loyal, if bewildered, companion.

The Saw-Horse (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 5

An ordinary wooden sawhorse brought to life to serve as a steed, given knots for eyes and a branch for a head. Newly awakened and puzzled by existence, it is tireless and swift, never needing rest, and carries the travelers on their journey, though it must learn what its strange new life means.

The Scarecrow (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The living scarecrow, stuffed with straw and prized for the cleverness he believes the great Wizard gave him, who was left to rule the Emerald City after the Wizard departed. Good-natured, thoughtful, and fond of puzzling problems out, he reigns contentedly until his throne is unexpectedly challenged.

The Tin Woodman (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The man made entirely of tin, kind and sentimental, who treasures the heart the Wizard once gave him. Now the ruler of the Winkie country in the west of Oz, he keeps himself brightly polished and remains a steadfast, gentle friend, ready to help when old companions come seeking his aid.

General Jinjur (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 8

A bold, pretty young woman who raises an Army of Revolt made up of girls armed with knitting needles. Determined and audacious, she leads them to seize the Emerald City, intending to overthrow its ruler and set the women to enjoy the riches and the men to the housework.

The Woggle-Bug (Supporting)

Also known as H. M. Woggle-Bug, T. E.

First appears in chapter 12

A greatly enlarged insect who, by an accident, was magnified to human size while highly educated, and now styles himself Highly Magnified and Thoroughly Educated. Pompous, wordy, and fond of bad puns, he joins the travelers and offers his learning, such as it is, to their cause.

The Gump (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 17

A flying contraption the companions assemble from two sofas, palm leaves for wings, a broom for a tail, and a mounted animal head, then bring to life with magic powder to make their escape. Bemused to find itself alive as such an odd assembly, it carries the group through the air on their journey.

Glinda the Good (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 20

The beautiful and powerful Sorceress who rules the southern Quadling country of Oz, wise and just, commanding an army of her own. When the travelers seek her out, she agrees to help set right the question of who should truly rule the Emerald City, and her knowledge and magic prove decisive.
